The Man Without a Country
by: Edward Everett Hale
“The Man Without a Country” is a short story by
American writer Edward Everett Hale, first published
in The Atlantic in December 1863. It is the
story of American Army lieutenant Philip Nolan,
who renounces his country during a trial for treason
and is consequently sentenced to spend the
rest of his days at sea without so much as a word
of news about the United States. Though the story
is set in the early 19th century, it is an allegory
about the upheaval of the American Civil War.
Chowanoke Native American History
By Duvonya Chavis
October 2019
LOCAL HISTORY 5
The greatest negative impact on Indigenous people
living in America has been the denial of their right
to enjoy and practice their culture. Although the overall
impact resulted in statistics that reveal similar social
disparities among Indigenous people across the United
States, American Indians were impacted in various
ways depending on the region that they lived in. Several
Indians residing in eastern North Carolina were
reclassified as mulatto by Census takers. There are
census documents from the 1800’s that clearly reveal
instances where recorders listed a community of these
NC citizens as Indian that was later poorly erased and
changed to give them a mulatto designation. Likewise,
during the 1920’s, a Register of Deeds in Virginia
erased Indian from the birth records of all Indigenous
people born in Virginia and reclassified them by changing
their race to colored, or in one instance to white
when there was vehement opposition.
However, during the same period of time in the
western part of the US, it was a common practice to
take Indian children from their parents, send them to
boarding schools, and prohibit them from speaking
their language and practicing their culture, or face severe
punishment. As a result, while many reservation
Indians retained aspects of their tribes’ cultures, it has
been a challenge for them to recall and practice those
traditions in a manner their ancestors had practiced
prior to colonization. In modern society, a consensus
among the elders of the tribe is needed to rediscover
the formation of traditional norms.
While the US government began to accept some
responsibility in the 1970’s for their mistreatment
of American Indians and began to institute policies
to promote Indian self-determination in an effort to
correct the social disparities, their responsibility has
primarily been limited to reservation or tribal Indians
that are recognized by the federal government. Their
responsibility to Indigenous people who remained in
the eastern part of the US and who were scattered into
small communities to persist distinctively as American
Indian has largely been ignored. Indigenous people
in the east enabled British colonization and are yet to
receive reparations for the mistreatment that incurred
beyond their control. Slightly more than one-half of
America’s Indigenous people are recognized by the
federal government, yet only a little over one-tenth of
North Carolina’s Indigenous people belong to a tribe
that is federally recogniz
Gingerbread Cake
INGREDIENTS
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
2/3 cup mild-flavored molasses
2/3 cup boiling water
1 large egg
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350°F. grease a 9 inch square pan with butter and lightly coat with flour.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. Set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, molasses, and boiling water.
When the mixture is luke warm, whisk in the egg.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and whisk until just combined and there are no more
FINANCIAL FOCUS
Don’t Change 401(k) Mix During Market Drops
As you’re well aware, we’ve seen some sudden and sizable drops
in the financial markets in 2019. While market volatility is nothing
new, the recent plunges happened during a period of general political
and economic unease. Still, it can be harmful to overreact to such
events – especially if it means making radical changes to your 401(k).
And yet, many people do just that. During market downturns, investors
often move money from their 401(k)’s stock accounts into perceived
safer accounts, such as those primarily containing bonds or other
fixed-income securities. This move may result in reduced volatility
on your 401(k) statements, and if that’s all you want, you might be
satisfied. But you do need to realize the cost involved – specifically,
fixed-income investments will not provide the same rate of return that
equities (stocks) can. So, if you liquidate some of your equity holdings,
you may slow the growth potential of your 401(k), which, in turn, could
slow your progress toward your long-term financial goals. Furthermore,
if you get rid of substantial amounts of your equities when their
price is down, you won’t be able to benefit from owning them when
their value goes up again – in other words, you’ll be on the sidelines
during the next market rally.
Here’s the key issue: A 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement
plan is a long-term investment account, whereas moves made in
reaction to market drops are designed to produce short-term results.
In other words, these types of actions are essentially incompatible with
the ultimate objective of your 401(k).
Of course, when the market is volatile, you may want to do something
with your 401(k), but, in most cases, you’re far better off by sticking
with the investment mix that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance
and time horizon. However, this doesn’t mean you should never
adjust your 401(k)’s portfolio. In fact, you may well want to make some
changes under these circumstances:
Submitted by Chuck O’Keefe
Chuck.O’Keefe@edwardjones.com
• You’re nearing retirement – If you are nearing retirement, you may
need to prepare your 401(k) for future downturns – after all, you don’t
want to have to start taking withdrawals when your portfolio is down.
So, if you are within, say, five years of retirement, you may need to
shift some, but certainly not all, of your assets from growth-oriented
vehicles to income-producing ones.
• Your goals have changed – Even when you’re many years away
from retirement, you probably have an idea of what that lifestyle will
look like. Perhaps you plan to travel for several months of the year or
purchase a vacation home in a different climate. These are expensive
goals and may require you to invest somewhat aggressively in your
401(k). But you could change your mind. If you were to scale back
your plans – perhaps more volunteering, less traveling – you might be
able to afford to “step off the gas” a little and invest somewhat more
conservatively in your 401(k), though you will always need a reasonable
percentage of growth-oriented investments.
By responding to factors such as these, rather than short-term market
declines, you can get the most from your 401(k), allowing it to become
a valuable part of your retirement income.
Recycling 101: What to know before you throw October 2019 GREEN 7
(BPT) - When it comes to recycling, do you know what to throw?
A plastic milk jug is recyclable, but an old plastic toy isn’t. The cardboard box from your
latest online order can go in your recycling container, but a greasy pizza box shouldn’t.
Aluminum cans, yes; aluminum foil, no.
It can seem confusing, but that’s where Recycling Simplified comes in. Republic Services
aims to simplify recycling with easy-to-follow tips for consumers.
Consumers are trying to do the right thing by recycling, but they don’t always know what
- or how - to recycle. In fact, about one-third of what gets tossed in curbside recycling
containers doesn’t belong there. That’s one out of every three items!
website for information on hazardous waste disposal.
DON’T recycle yard or food waste. Composting options for tree trimmings and other yard
waste may be available in your community, but not via your recycling container.
DON’T bag it. Reuse plastic bags if you can, then return them to grocery stores for commercial
processing.
For more quick and easy guidelines to becoming a better recycler, visit RecyclingSimplified.com.
Many items are placed in the recycling bin with the hope that they’ll be recycled. This is
known as “wish-cycling.” But people sometimes confuse “reuse” with “recycle.” Examples
of this include old clothing and shoes, stuffed animals, tools and plastic toys. All of
these items could be reused if donated, but they won’t find a new home if you put them
in your recycling bin. Take them to a donation box or thrift shop.
So, what does belong in the recycling bin? There are three main categories of recyclables:
Paper and cardboard, metal cans including aluminum, and plastic bottles and
jugs. With bottles and jugs, leave the caps on or throw them away - they’re too small to
recycle by themselves.
Also, recyclables should be empty, clean and dry. Even when an item is recyclable, like
a soup can or plastic ketchup bottle, any remaining food or liquid becomes a problem.
When those items come into contact with clean recyclables, that leftover chicken noodle
soup will saturate otherwise good paper and cardboard. This is known as contamination,
and once it happens, perfectly recyclable items become trash and wind up in the landfill
- which is what we’re all trying to avoid by recycling.
And don’t bag your recyclables. The sorting process at a recycling center happens
quickly, and most of what is bagged or bundled ends up in the garbage because sorters
cannot see the contents. Plastic bags also can get tangled in the machinery, causing
delays or even damage.
UNLIMITED REINVENTED
“Many of us want to be better recyclers, but we aren’t sure how or think we don’t have
the time,” said Pete Keller, vice president of recycling and sustainability at Republic
Services. “With a few simple steps, we can all do our part to make environmentally
responsible choices and help make a positive impact in our community for generations
to come.”
Make sure you know how and what to recycle with these simple Do’s and Don’ts from
Republic Services:
DO recycle paper products. Clean, dry, flattened cardboard, newspapers and magazines,
office paper and mail are accepted. Break down cardboard boxes before putting in
your bin and remove any plastic such as the see-through windows in envelopes.
PLUS, CHOOSE ONE OF THESE PREMIUM SERVICES
WITH THE AT&T UNLIMITED &MORE SM PREMIUM PLAN * .
DO recycle empty soda or food cans. Be sure any remaining food or liquid is removed
and the can is rinsed and dry.
DO recycle “Empty, Clean, Dry” plastic. You can leave the tops on bottles and jugs.
DO remember, when in doubt, throw it out. If you’re unsure whether an item is recyclable,
put it in the trash.
DON’T recycle wet or food-tainted items. A greasy pizza box should go in the trash.
DON’T recycle cans that held hazardous waste. Metal cans that contained paint, oil or
any other potentially hazardous waste need special handling. Consult your city or county
How Schools are Changing to Improve STEAM Learning
(StatePoint) As STEAM learning has grown in prominence
in classrooms across the country, so has the role
of tools and resources facilitating this approach to learning.
Here are five examples of how technology is supporting
the integration of science, technology, engineering, arts
and mathematics in classrooms today.
• Lessons brought to life: Virtual reality in the classroom
has the power to immerse students in STEAM material
more fully than ever before, while giving students with
engineering proclivities the opportunity to create their
own educational content. As the cost of this technology
becomes more accessible, a growing number of schools
are benefiting.
• Visualized math: The ability to visualize mathematical
concepts can support students’ grasp of the material.
And expanded features on the latest models of graphing
calculators give students the ability to easily draw
three-dimensional graphs such as planes, cylinders and
spheres, and view them from various angles in order
to better analyze their shape. The expanded features
and improved catalog function of the fx-CG50 PRIZM
graphing calculator, for example, includes a cross-section
option and special zoom function, enabling students to
further examine graphs for deeper analysis. Offering a
color LCD with a full textbook-style display, students can
even plot graphs over pictures of real-life scenes.
• Art lessons without the mess: New free and inexpensive
educational apps give art teachers an opportunity to
deliver lessons without the mess. From charcoal drawing
to pottery to painting, the digital experience can faithfully
replicate the real thing, so that young artists learn all the
fine art principles needed to create a masterpiece.
• Accelerated music instruction: Research continues
to support the vital role that music education plays in
STEAM learning. And now, new tools are making it easy
for educators to introduce students to a wide scope of
tones, rhythms and genres, and offer students an opportunity
to learn at a pace that keeps them motivated.
For example, the Casio CT-X700 portable keyboard for
advanced beginners to intermediate players features a
Step-Up Lesson system that displays proper finger placement
and notation, allowing users to easily learn songs.
A USB-MIDI port connects to any Mac, PC, Android or
iOS device so that the world of music is literally at the
fingertips of students.
• Better presentation: From sines and cosines to a map
of the galaxy, no matter what subject is being taught,
teachers know it isn’t always easy to maintain the class’s
Three Surprising Ways to Save
Money on Pet Care
(NewsUSA) - Owning a pet comes with a lot of benefits -- but
caring for a pet can also have an unwelcome impact on your
budget. According to the ASPCA, owning a dog or cat can
cost up to $1,000 in the first year, and many people end up
spending much more. The good news is, you can cut your
pet care expenses without compromising your pet’s health
and
wellbeing. Here are a few tips to save money on pet care:
1. Don’t skip the vet.
If you’re trying to save money, it can be tempting to cut back
on veterinary visits. But, according to Julie Ciarmella of the
American Veterinary Medicine Association, “an investment in
preventive healthcare can reduce your long-term pet healthcare
costs.” Why? Because regular check-ups can prevent
expensive complications down the road.
2. Get by with a little help from your friends.
Dog-walking, pet-sitting and kennel services can be one of
the most expensive aspects of owning a pet. You can save
money by taking the “you scratch my dog’s back, I’ll scratch
your cat’s chin” approach and tapping into a network of other
pet owners in your area. Neighborhood dog parks are great
places to meet like-minded pet lovers; or you could try good
old fashioned advertising.
3. Choose high-quality pet products that give you more value
for your money.
Reaching for the cheapest product can feel like a thrifty
move, but you may be surprised by the impact “cheap” products
can have on your budget. For example, cheaper clay cat
litter needs to be changed more often -- so cat owners go
through bag after bag. World’s Best Cat Litter is an alternative
that harnesses the concentrated power of corn for
long-lasting performance. You’ll use less litter, replace it less
often, and save money in the long run.
In the end, remember that what your pet needs most is love.
Keep things simple and invest in high-value products where
it matters, and you’ll be on your way to a pet-care budget
that works for you.
Adam’s Needle
By: Coy Domecq
I
t never ceases to amaze me at the beneficial uses of plants
that we walk by every day without ever realizing their attributes.
For me Adam’s Needle, Yucca filamentosa in the agave
family, is but one of these plants. This plant is a rosette of
sword-shaped spiny-tipped leaves and spikes of creamy white
flowers when in bloom. Adam’s Needle is native to the southeast
US and can be found especially among coastal plain locales
but does well in just about any place with well-drained soil and
exposure to full sun. This plant was and continues to be used
by Native Americans for a host of applications, from food source
to medicinal remedy. Before we proceed, the standard caution
applies that one should never consume any plant without positive
identification and knowledge of proper preparation. Like all yuccas
and other similar plants, Adam’s Needle especially the root
contains saponins, soap-like chemicals that, unless leached by
repeated washings might cause stomach distress. These are not
medical recommendations but rather a recount of historical and
contemporary use to treat ailments. All parts of the plant can be
consumed; the flowers, immature fruits, stalk, root, and seeds are
typically boiled or roasted. Medical uses include a dermatological
wash, ointment or salve for rashes and skin diseases, a treatment
for strains and sprains and even as decoction for the treatment
of diabetes. Other practical uses of the plant are for use as a detergent,
fire starter made from dried fibers, cordage from twisting
individual fibers, and handily enough a needle with the filamentous
thread already attached.
INSPIRATION
Find Relief from Dry Eye Today
According to the National Eye Institute, it’s estimated
that dry eye affects nearly 5 million Americans over
the age of 50. Additionally, tens of millions more may also
have undiagnosed dry eye with less severe symptoms.
Like so many disease of the eye (glaucoma, cataracts,
retinal issues), Dry Eye often goes unnoticed for a long
period of time until symptoms become more noticeable.
While Dry Eye isn’t quite as debilitating as some of those
other issues, this doesn’t make it any less serious of a
problem. Anything that causes physical discomfort and
affects your day-to-day life is a serious issue that should
be examined by a doctor or a trained professional. But if
so many people live there lives without ever realizing they
have Dry Eye, what can you do to know if you should be
looking at treatment options for Dry Eye?
One way to know whether or not you should see your
doctor about dry eye is to know what the risk factors are.
Dry Eye can either be a temporary or chronic condition,
and is often systemic of other issues. Some of these issues
can be serious, and earlier treatment could prevent
more permanent damage. Many medications can cause
Dry Eye as well. Prescriptions for high blood pressure or
Parkinson’s disease, as well as antihistamines and decongestants
can cause dryness of the mouth and eyes.
Pregnancy can also cause temporary Dry Eye. Other
items that cause Dry Eye include:
• Allergies and the medications
• Long periods of non-blinking, like when staring at a
computer screen
• Long-term contact lens wear
• Plastic surgery
• Chemical or thermal burns of the eyelid
• Other medical issues that can cause dryness of the
eyes, mouth, nose, and possibly other organs
Another way to know whether or not you should see a
doctor fro Dry Eye is to understand the symptoms and
look for those symptoms before they become a serious
nuisance. The common symptoms of Dry Eye include:
• Stinging or burning of the eye
• Feeling like there is something in the eye
• Periods of excess tears followed by periods of dryness
• Redness of the eye
• The inability to produce tears when crying
• Discomfort while wearing contacts
• Eye fatigue, eye aches, or heavy eye lids
In recent years, the treatment options for Dry Eye has
increased drastically, giving people more opportunities
to find relief without the need for surgery. Often, an oral
medication or eye drop can help reduce the discomfort of
Dry Eye and provide you with more natural tears. Additionally,
surgical options may provide more of a permanent
solution to Dry Eye rather than simply treating the
symptoms with medications. In the meantime, there are
plenty of things you can do to protect yourself from the
troublesome effects of the Dry Eye. Try using over-thecounter
drops to keep the eyes moisturized throughout
the day, always wear sunglasses when in direct sunlight,
and try to give your eyes a break from staring at a computer
screen for prolonged periods of time.
By recognizing the risk factors of Dry Eye, understanding
its symptoms and knowing what you can do to protect
yourself from any needless irritation or discomfort, you
can find relief from Dry Eye.
Road Kill
by Ron Ben-Dov
I was out late last night, after midnight, it was
When I ran into the devil and his boys
We partied late and we partied hard
Kept it going until just before the sunrise
As the party ended, they offered me a ride
The devil was the driver, we piled into the back
Satan hit the gas and that truck took off
He drove like a bat from hell
He took the turns full speed, first left and then right
Then blew thru three stop signs and twelve traffic lights
I held on with all I had, but it wasn’t near enough
I fell out the truck and landed hard upon the road
I learned a lesson, painfully and sure
If you ride with the devil, you’re going to wind up,
5 Tips on How to Pay Off That Student Loan Before You’re 30
by: Chloe Anagnos
College isn’t the best option for everyone. Some will do
just as well if not better by learning their craft through
apprenticeships or by simply enrolling in a trade school. But
when college is part of your calling and you simply cannot
juggle a part-time job and school, taking on student loans
might be your only option.
If this is your case, don’t despair. It is true that the government’s
long history of getting involved with the student
loan industry made the situation worse. But despite the
evidence, regulators don’t seem ready to get out of the
picture just yet, meaning the cost of a college education will
continue to rise. To many, this means tens of thousands of
dollars in the red the moment they step out of school. And
if alumni aren’t careful, that reality could affect their credit
and their chances to own a home or even buy a car.
So how do you speed up the process of paying off your student
loan without putting everything you earn toward your
debt? And how can you follow through before turning 30?
Here are five practical tips that literally everyone can follow
to put an end to student debt quickly.
1: Live Frugally
Sounds like your grandpa’s advice, right? That’s because it
is. And you know what? He was right: trimming your budget
never fails. Especially if your first years as a professional
aren’t being spent on high-paying jobs. Furthermore, cutting
your monthly expenses will help you to afford doing
things you love while paying off your debt. Unfortunately,
young people today aren’t as good at saving as the last
generations, so finding ways to stop spending so much
might not be all that easy—at first.
So how do you live frugally in a potentially difficult economy
and with the price of everything on the rise?
2: Find Yourself A Side Gig
Side gigs are in style these days, and that has a lot to do
with student loan debt repayment. After all, a lot of people
find that their single-job income isn’t enough. Like others
who found themselves in need of extra work, you, too,
might have to take on a side gig.
If you have a car, you might want to join Uber or Lyft and do
a little hustling a few days here and there. You could even
rent your car to others who don’t have one. But if neither of
those options will work for you, using sites such as Fiverr
and TaskRabbit to make some extra spending money, or
even renting a room in your home on Airbnb, could do the
trick. You could also be part of mock juries for extra cash,
as lawyers are always trying to test their cases to mock juries
before going to court. To those living near law schools,
this might be extra easy.
In addition to gigs that don’t require any special skills, there
are also side gigs you might be qualified for that could help
you pay off your debt sooner.
If you like dogs, you can become a pet sitter using sites
such as Rover, Petsitter.com, or even looking for opportunities
on Craigslist. And if you have special skills, such as
knowing other languages, you can work as a translator on
Gengo or Upwork or find companies looking for part-time,
remote workers.
You can also use Amazon Mechanical Turk to do easy
tasks like visit websites, identify objects on photos or
videos, fill out surveys, write content, and others that don’t
require much time.
Whatever you do, keep it simple. There are plenty of opportunities,
especially if you can work online and from home in
your spare time.
5: Refinance (But Only If You Meet These Requirements)
The idea of refinancing is to be able to bring your interest
rate low enough that your student loan debt will be faster
to repay. Unfortunately, not everyone is eligible to take this
short cut since it requires good credit and steady employment.
Before considering taking this route, check your credit. If
it’s in the high 600s and you have a history of on-time debt
payments and solid, steady income, then you are a good
candidate for refinancing.
For instance, if you have $50,000 in debt and you refinance
it, lowering your 8.5 percent interest rate to 4.5 percent,
you could end up paying off your debt two years earlier
than you originally expected.
Another advantage of refinancing is that it replaces several
student loans with one private loan. You pay to one service
provider at a lower rate, and you can choose new loan
terms that are shorter and that will help to save you big
bucks in the end. While this may drive your monthly payment
minimums up, it will save you money in the long run
and make your everyday life easier—even if you have to
hustle a bit for a few years before being able to relax and
enjoy your hard-earned money!
However, if you have a federal loan that offers benefits
such as income-driven repayments, refinance won’t be the
best option.
So what are you waiting for?
ECONOMICS 13
By following these practical tips, you should be debt-free
and ready to even start saving for retirement! Think ahead,
friends, and you will go far.
If you live in a big city, explore the idea of having roommates,
especially if you’re close to a college campus.
Former college colleagues might be in the same boat and
might be more than willing to share an apartment with
you. But if that’s not an option, how about finding current
students who are looking to save some money by sharing
a place?
When budgeting for food, remember to keep it simple and
cheap by not going out to eat.
There are countless online accounts that teach you how
to cook simple and cheap meals at home. That means
that if you have access to WiFi, you, too, can conquer the
kitchen. Also, consider slashing Starbucks and other side
expenses that aren’t a necessity from your monthly budget.
You will be surprised to know you could be saving over
$2,000 per year!
Whatever you save, put it toward paying off your debt.
Remember, making more than the minimum payment each
month is the best way to get rid of debt rapidly.
3: Explore Tax Deductions And Other Credits
When working on your tax returns, keep in mind you might
be eligible for student loan interest deductions even if you
don’t itemize your taxes. While some requirements must
be met, this could easily deduct up to $2,500 on your taxes
yearly, helping you to keep more of your money and put it
toward paying off debt.
While taxation is a drag on our efforts to make ends meet,
it’s important to take advantage of any and all tax deductions
we can get. Especially if we’re in the red.
4: Make Extra Payments
Sounds like a no-brainer, right? And that’s because it is.
But simply sending the financing company an extra check
every month won’t do. After all, many firms simply apply
any extra payment to the next month’s bill, and this won’t
help you pay your loan faster.
The right way to send extra payments monthly is to contact
your service provider in advance and instruct them to apply
any extra payment to that month’s due balance without
changing anything about the next month’s due date. By
following this strategy, you could be debt-free years ahead
of schedule.

Dr. Crime is a pseudonym for a social scientist holding a Ph.D. degree in sociology and in criminology.
website www.keepkidshome.net if you or your child is in trouble, or you have custody issues, he
may be able to help, give him a call (252-339-0000).
Dear Dr. Crime: You wrote that going to church helps
keep kids out of crime. I buy that but how do I get my kids
to go? Yell at them? Old Dad.
Dear Dad: Show them advantages of religious activity.
They will meet nice people and have an addition to
their resume. One argument that many do not use is the
scientific finding that religion is good for health. They will
be healthier by affiliation with a religious group, and the
research shows it can be any of the major religions. A
review of the science behind this argument was in the current
issue of Bottom-Line Health, by Dr. Koenig of Duke
University. The greater the religious event attendance the
healthier the person, even extending to an additional 7
years of life.
Dear Dr. Crime: If people want to get “high”, let them, it
won’t do much harm. The fuss about drugs is unreasonable.
Sweetheart
Dear lady: A lot of people feel that way. But the danger
is such we should prevent drug misuse if possible. The
Centers for Disease Control tells us that a good estimate
is 72,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in 2017. That is
197 people daily. Many of those deaths involved heroin
or synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. You are wrong, we
must do more to prevent such harm.
Dear Dr. Crime: I am a strong man, but I am scared to go
some places I used to frequent. I don’t even go to church
like I did because some idiot might come in and shoot
us. Kids are scared of school and no public places seem
really safe as they did. What broad effects have the mass
shootings caused?
Dear Strong Man: You are not alone. Many of the
churches and other private groups have set up a safety
committee. Do the same at your church, school or business!
We must be alert; a safety committee can help.
You are not alone in your fear. Last month the American
Psychological Association reported their Harris Poll about
fear as you describe. A majority of parents are fearful for
their kids at school, and 79% of adults report stress based
on mass shootings. Women are impacted more than men.
Hispanic and African American adults show the highest
Dear Pop: The federal NCJRS reports are frightening.
The increase in murders is higher among kids than adults,
more for boys than girls. Male teens at 3.3 % of the
population, commit 5.6 percent of all murders. Sixty-five
percent of homicides committed by juveniles involve guns.
Multiple-offender homicides have more than doubled in
the past decade and are often racially motivated. At a risk
of over involvement in private lives, we should address
ways to better raise our kids, and to overcome race problems.
Dear Dr. Crime: Is it true that pretty girls are non-violent?
16 BEAUTY
Cool weather, cool looks: Tips and tricks for styling top accessory trends
Foods good for
your skin
(BPT) - Cooler temperatures mean it’s time to change up your wardrobe. While
cozy attire, like a great pair of jeans and a favorite sweater, will always be in style,
you can keep any outfit on trend by using accessories strategically.
The experts at Jewelry Television (JTV) share the top trends and tricks for using
jewelry to enhance your outfit and reflect your one-of-a-kind style:
Trend 1: Jewel tones
Berries
Elevate your cool weather wardrobe with designs in deep jewel tones. Rich and regal,
jewel tone colors are saturated hues that resemble specific gemstones. These
colors include sapphire blue, emerald green, ruby red, amethyst purple and citrine
yellow.
Jewel tones look great against monochromatic materials such as leather and
suede. Layer multiple jewel tones or focus on a single hue for your jewelry ensemble
and you’ll get the perfect juxtaposition for standout style.
Trend 2: Overstated bling
Be the center of attention with larger-than-life looks, such as over-sized necklaces
and bold rings. Statement jewelry is hot during the cool weather months, and
comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Have a minimalist outfit? Statement
pieces are a simple way to add fabulous flair.
Carrots
Keep in mind, with statement jewelry, a little goes a long way. To maximize your
look, keep other jewelry to a minimum so your statement piece really pops. For
example, a large bib necklace of woven crystals and pearls is the ideal way to
enhance a basic blazer and can be complemented with simple stud earrings to
complete your look.
Trend 3: Linear and lengthening
Show off your subtle style with elongated earrings and necklaces with Y-necks. The
fastening technique for elongated necklaces is what makes them stand out from
other necklaces. Unlike the traditional clasps, these are fastened by threading one
end through the other or by simply tying a knot in the chain.
Green Tea
The versatility of these unique necklaces makes them the ideal complement for
layered looks. As you put together an outfit, think thin to thick. For instance, start
with a tank or basic tee and a Y-necklace. Then add a cardigan or jean jacket to
keep the chill at bay. On those really cold days, focus on elongated earrings and
finish with a pashmina or infinity scarf. Layering allows for versatility throughout the
day as the temperature changes while still being stylish.
Trend 4: Nature inspired
Eggs
Feel the spirit of Mother Nature and embrace your inner bohemian style with
nature-inspired jewelry and accessories. Designs that feature dainty feathers and
bold earth tones really reflect this trend. Wear them and you’ll quickly discover they
become a conversation starter among friends and coworkers.
An easy way to try the nature trend is to add green crystal jewelry pieces to an
outfit. For a boho-chic look, consider natural stones such as beautiful blue turquoise
for necklaces, rings and more. Any accessory that reflects the environment
is a great addition to your wardrobe, including designs featuring leaves, birds and
butterflies.
ideas and live tips from their experts, visit the JTV Channel Finder at www.jtv.com/
Fall Shoes
10 to-dos for home and yard winterization October 2019 FASHION 17
Embroidered
Bootie
(BPT) - Scarves. Pumpkin spice lattes. Leaves
crunching underfoot. Sweater season is moving
in fast, which means it’s time to start transitioning
to fall maintenance to make sure your home
and yard are ready for winter. The following are
10 things you can do to prepare for the cold and
wet weather ahead.
1. Interseed your lawn
A summer of heavy use can take its toll on even
the healthiest of lawns. If your turf has some
thin or bare patches, fall is the ideal time to
reseed. A turf specialist at a garden shop or university
extension office can help you choose the
right kind of seed for your local conditions. After
spreading the seed, water lightly and frequently
(if it doesn’t rain) to keep the soil slightly damp
until the seed germinates.
For those who live in the warmer, Southern regions
of the U.S., interseeding with cool season
grass seed can help you enjoy a lush green
lawn year-round. Speak with a local landscaper
or your university extension office to determine
the best timing, seed and process for interseeding
with cool season grasses as warm season
lawns turn dormant.
2. Winterize your irrigation system
If the ground in your area freezes down to the
depth of your irrigation pipes during the winter,
be sure to shut off the water to the system and
drain the pipes before the first freeze.
3. Lower your mower blades
For the last few mowings in the fall (and the
first few in the spring), set your lawn mower
blades at the lowest recommended height for
your type of turf. You no longer need the height
of the grass to shade the soil and keep it cool,
and minimizing the amount of moisture that’s
trapped by the grass can help prevent fungal
disease.
4. Remove the leaves
Don’t leave your lawn buried under a thick layer
of leaves. If you don’t want to rake, try mulch
mowing - chopping the leaves up into small
pieces allows them to decompose more quickly,
so that they fertilize the grass instead of suffocating
it. You may need to mow more frequently
to keep up with the falling leaves, even if the
grass itself isn’t growing quickly.
5. Clean up your yard
Any object that sits on your grass all winter
can create a dead spot. To protect your lawn,
remove toys, furniture and other items from
the grass. Be sure to cover or store anything
that’s not designed to be out in the rain or snow
indoors.
6. Prep your equipment for spring lawn care
In addition to seeding, another great way to
get a jumpstart on spring is to give your lawn
mower a tune-up. By sharpening the blades
before you put it away for the winter, it will be
ready to get back to work when the grass starts
growing again in the spring.
7. Check your roof, gutters and downspouts
Leaks can lead to costly water damage, so
check for potential trouble spots now, before the
winter storms start. Look for broken shingles
and damaged flashing around vents, chimneys
and skylights; clean the leaves out of your gutters;
and add extensions to your downspouts if
the water runs less than three feet away from
the foundation of the house.
8. Check your doors and windows for leaks
Eliminating air leaks around doors and window
frames is one of the most effective ways
to lower your heating bills. Caulk and replace
weatherstripping where needed to prevent cold
air (and potentially water) from entering. Don’t
forget to make sure the seal between the garage
door and the ground is tight as well.
9. Service your heating system
Before you turn your heating system on for the
winter, have it cleaned and inspected by a professional.
Regular preventive maintenance will
keep it running safely and efficiently and make
sure minor issues are resolved before they
become major problems.
10. Test your emergency power generator
Winter wind and ice storms can bring down
power lines and cause lengthy blackouts. If
you live in an area where power outages are
common and you have an emergency backup
generator, test it now, and make sure you have
engine oil and filters on hand.
Spending a bit of time in the fall to prepare your
home and yard will allow you to enjoy the winter
months with peace of mind. What’s more, the
effort you invest in the health of your lawn now
can pay dividends in the spring by jumpstarting
your turf’s growth and minimizing weeds. Have
you completed everything on the list? It must be
time to curl up with a good book, a hot beverage
and relax!
Don’t ever humiliate a
man. If you’re gonna
have to dress him out,
you take him aside and
do it that way. That’s
the one thing I don’t like
about Hollywood: They
go in for public humiliation.
You shouldn’t do
that to a man.
HEALTH
What’s in your diet?
Last time I mentioned that the human body has 12
major systems. It starts with digestion.
These systems are extremely sophisticated and nuanced,
and it starts with what you consume.
Let’s do a refresher. Essential nutrients include: Water,
the most abundant substance is necessary for the
movement of nutrients to the cells. Your water should
be supplemented with anti-oxidants, anti-aging and
anticancer additives. Multitask your water.
Protein is the second most abundant molecule and is
necessary for many functions including ,DNA replication,
providing structure to cells, and organizes components
of body tissue, such as muscle, hair, collagen,
enzymes and antibodies, and is an energy fuel source.
NON MEAT PROTEIN is by far the best source in our
polluted environment. Carbohydrates, are necessary
as a fuel source, in that it’s converted to glucose and
supplied for quick energy to every cell in your body, including
your brain. The carbs should be unrefined, and
contain at least 4% dietary fiber, anything less ,will be
detrimental to your health. Dietary fiber should always
exceed total fat, in the nutrition facts panel. Fats, are
the 3rd fuel source. Fatty acids, a component of fats,
are the major source of stored energy, and tissue
development.
Your essential nutrients should be of the highest quality,
and you should avoid synthetic substances for your
systems to function at their efficient best. Anything less
than optimum efficiency diminishes your quality of life,
and it gets worse as you age.
I had an interesting conversation regarding dairy. So, I’ll
rehash. In 1993 the FDA approved rBGH (recombinant
bovine growth hormone) to be marketed to the dairy
industry to increase milk production in cows. A side effect
of the synthetic hormone is increased antibiotic use.
Health and Nutrition Strategies for
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Warren is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Batchelors degree in Nutrition Science.
Antibiotics are used therapeutically for the inflammation
caused by additional milking, and sub-therapeutically
to fatten the animal, leading to increased antibiotic
residues in dairy. In addition, epidemiologist are taking a
serious look at IGF-1,in milk from rBGH treated cows.
Early studies are indicating a relationship between
elevated blood levels of IGF-1, and the development
of prostate and breast cancer. We’ll explore that link in
depth as more data is released. In many instances consumption
of dairy causes discomfort and as aforementioned
could cause certain cancers.
Finally, since the United States no longer leads in pork
production (China is the leading pork producer in the
world), and therein, lies my concerns. April , 2008, in
a press release by APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service) 9 CFR part 166, titled - Swine Health
Protection: Feeding of Processed Product to Swine.
The release states that the rule regarding the treatment
of garbage that consist of industrially processed materials
makes clear that garbage fed to swine has been
treated to inactivate disease organisms that pose a risk
to the U.S. Swine industry. China’s pork production is
considered equal to the U.S. The U.S. No longer has
a law requiring Country Of Origin Labeling (congressionally
initiated 2009 and congressionally rescinded
2016). China’s quality control leaves a lot to be desired,
particularly during the tariffs. All very curious. Can’t
wait until the “Beyond Meat” industry gets rolling.
Should be quick, since they’re underwritten by major
meat industry players.
Next time we’ll go into detail of the importance of fiber,
vitamin C, and omega 3, three of my favorite supplements.
You are what you eat.
Are you getting enough protein in
your diet?
(BPT) - You may have noticed protein bars and shakes popping
up at grocery stores or gyms. Coverage of the benefits
of protein is all the rage. So it might be surprising to learn
that almost half of older adults are not consuming enough
protein, thus negatively impacting their health, according to
a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health
& Aging.
What role should protein play in our diet?
“Protein can be thought of as one of the building blocks to
our muscles, bones and blood,” said Dr. James Metcalf, a
medical director with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement.
“Not only does protein help keep our body strong,
it helps promote good balance and mobility - all important
factors to being able to live independently as we age.”
Additionally, protein helps combat common signs of aging,
like declines in muscle mass, strength and function, which
can put you at greater risk of falling and fracturing bones.
But before you grab the nearest protein bar, let’s discuss
exactly how much protein you should consume each day.
How much protein do I need?
The National Academy of Medicine’s recommended dietary
allowance for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body
weight per day. For an adult who weighs 195 pounds that’s
71 grams per day; for someone who weighs 170 pounds
that’s 62 grams per day.
While it is helpful to know how many grams of protein you
should aim to consume each day, knowing the amount of
protein in the foods we eat can be a bit of a mystery. Below
are some sources of high-quality protein and the corresponding
amount of protein in each, according to the U.S.
Department of Agriculture FoodData Central database:
* Chicken breast (one): 54 grams of protein
* Salmon (0.5 fillet): 40 grams of protein
* Lentils (one cup cooked): 18 grams of protein
* Black beans (one cup cooked): 15 grams of protein
* Greek yogurt (one container; plain, nonfat): 10 grams of
protein
* Egg (one): 6 grams of protein
Bottom line
If you feel you might benefit from adding some sources of
protein into your diet, be sure to talk with your doctor before
making any drastic changes.
Increasing your protein consumption will not be a silver bullet
to keeping your body healthy as you age. Staying physically
active is also important to help maintain your health
and live your best life.
