Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by: Lewis Carroll
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened
to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by
English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym
Lewis Carroll. It tells of a young girl named Alice falling
through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar,
anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic,
giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with
children.[2] It is considered to be one of the best examples of
the literary nonsense genre.
One of the best-known and most popular works of Englishlanguage
fiction, its narrative course, structure, characters,
and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular
culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre. The
work has never been out of print, and it has been translated
into at least 97 languages. Its ongoing legacy encompasses
many adaptations for stage, screen, radio, art, theme parks,
board games, and video games.
Chowanoke Native American History
November is Native American Heritage Month. As
American Indians in North Carolina hold various
celebrations all month, we honor our culture and history
as Indigenous people of this land. North Carolina
is home to over 150,000 American Indians, having the
largest Native population east of the Mississippi.
North Carolina’s coastal tribes were one of the first in
North America to be impacted by British colonization.
Colonizers felt entitled to Indigenous lands through their
belief in the Doctrine of Discovery and this belief subsequently
justified their taking land throughout America,
including lands that the Chowanoke held.
As Indigenous people celebrate their heritage all month,
a unified sentiment permeates a hope of restoration
for our country and homeland. We are reminded that
the United States is a place where we once built our
communities and interacted culturally with family and
other tribal members for thousands upon thousands of
generations. America is where we fished, maintained
gardens, hunted, drew from the bountiful resources of
our land and had fun socially. We respected the earth
and environment and in turn, it served us well.
Native culture was naturally quite different from the colonizers.
We freely danced, drummed and sang whereas
the settlers were unable to acclimate to this. Even our
hygiene practices were different as noted in historic records.
Consequently our cultures clashed and over time,
like many other tribes, the Chowanoke were confined
to a reservation along Bennett’s Creek. Ultimately, the
Chowanoke lost even the little portion that remained.
By Duvonya Chavis
fought so hard to remain a tribal unit on communal lands
in Gates County, honor those who fought for restoration
after the reservation was lost, and honor those who will
come after us by providing an opportunity to have a land
base to perpetuate the Chowanoke heritage.
North Carolina will celebrate its 24th Annual American
Indian Heritage Celebration at the NC Museum of History
in Raleigh on November 23, 2019 from 11 am to 4
pm. You are invited to join as we celebrate.
When the opportunity to reclaim a part of our history
presented nearly 225 years later, we undoubtedly had
to seize it. For Chowanoke descendants, this signifies
our history and the perpetuation of our existence
as Indigenous people. It reminds future generations to
remember our resilience even in the aftermath of the
atrocities that occurred to our people, a genocide of
many variations which continued throughout America
into the 20th century. The historic reservation is a place
where we can preserve our heritage and celebrate the
continuation of Chowanoke people.
Gates County holds fond memories for many who
remember Chowanoke ancestors and relatives who
continued to live in the heart of Gates County and talk
about their Indian heritage. It is only fitting that we honor
our ancestors with these memories, honor those who
FINANCIAL FOCUS
How to Become a Long-term Investor
It’s a fairly predictable pattern: When the stock market rises, more
people invest, but after a large-scale drop, many of these same
people head for the exits. But by staying out of the financial markets,
and only putting their money in “safe” vehicles that offer few or no
growth prospects, are they really helping themselves? Here’s the
bottom line: If you’re going to make progress toward your long-term
goals, you have to become a long-term investor. But how?
To begin with, you need to understand that long-term investing involves
accepting inevitable short-term price swings. You may not like
seeing those sharp price drops, but it will help your outlook greatly
if you can keep them in perspective. Studies have shown that the longer
you hold your investments, the less impact market volatility can
have on them.
So, to reach that point where the market’s ups and downs have less
of a cumulative impact on your holdings, consider the following actions:
• Only invest money you won’t need for a long time. If you can tell
yourself that the money you are investing today is money you won’t
really need for 20 or 30 years, you’ll be better prepared, psychologically,
to get through the down periods of the financial markets. And as
long as you aren’t overextending yourself financially in other parts of
your life, you really shouldn’t need those investment dollars for a very
long time. They should be earmarked for goals you hope to achieve
far into the future, such as a comfortable retirement.
• Keep your focus on what is most important to you. If you can visualize
your long-term goals, you’ll find it easier to keep working toward
them. For example, if you are hoping to travel extensively when you
retire, keep thinking about what that might look like. You might even
Submitted by Chuck O’Keefe
Chuck.O’Keefe@edwardjones.com
research the countries you plan to visit, even if these trips are far
in the future. Ultimately, if you know where you’re going and you’re
determined to get there, you’ll get past the bumps in the road.
• Don’t spend excessive time reviewing your investment statements.
A bad month or two can cause some noticeably negative numbers
on your investment statements. But if you can discipline yourself to
avoid spending too much time dwelling on these figures, you may
feel less stress about investing – and you may even be less tempted
to make short-term moves that could have unfortunate long-term
results. However, if you do want to study your investment statements,
don’t just stop at the most recent results. Instead, look for trends
that might tell a different story. Has the number of shares you own in
various investments increased significantly over time? And over the
past five or 10 years, has your portfolio’s overall performance been
positive? By digging a little deeper into your statements, you might
gain more confidence in the course you’re following.
Short-term price drops are not pleasant to experience. However, you
can help yourself become a better long-term investor by following the
above suggestions, so put them to work soon – and stick with them.
The Dancing Angels
by Fr Jonathan Tobias, MDiv, MSEd
November 2019
ORTHODOX 7
“How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?”
Doubtless, you’ve heard this question before, and you knew
straightaway that it wasn’t meant to be taken seriously.
Angels have been long dismissed from modern thought,
pretty much assigned to the same wastebasket of history
into which the “flat earth” and the “green cheese moon” have
been thrown. At the beginning of the modern age, in the
1600’s, some philosophers started poking fun at the idea of
even thinking about such beings. They dismissed such thinking
as mere and idle speculation, about as useless as arguing
over “How many angels can dance upon the tip of a needle?”
For your information, by the way, no one in the medieval
church -- Thomas Aquinas nor any of the Scholastics -- ever
posed such a nonsensical question. This famous (and irresponsible)
question actually came from post-Reformation
philosophers: neither sort had any room for angels or even
rumors of angels: angels were not material and thus could
not be observed, experimented upon, and defined. So therefore,
in a “flat” sort of scientific worldview, they were simply
dismissed.
But the modern world, despite its technological prowess, cannot
afford to be so blindfolded. There is more to reality than
what can be scientifically proven or even proposed. Hope
and meaning, truth and goodness and even beauty cannot be
manufactured from elementary particles.
We would be better off with a worldview that recognizes
angels. Realistically and practically speaking, they’re all
around. From the time of Apostles, the Christian Church has
emphasized angels as a necessity for belief and life. There
is no place in Creation that is not without angelic presence.
Everything in the world is “managed” by these non-material
beings, even the stars, even strange numbers like pi and e
and the golden ratio.
But closest to our experience are the Guardian Angels. Every
one of us has one, whose entire task is to help us become
utterly transformed by divine love:
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones,” the
Lord said in Matthew 18.10, “for I tell you that in heaven
their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in
heaven.”
The Divine Love of the Holy Trinity is at the very basis of all
reality. Your Guardian Angel, whom you will see one day, is
simply trying to make you real.
8 TECH GIRL
5 do’s and don’ts to keep your identity safe from hackers
(BPT) - Resourceful thieves and cybercriminals continue
to find new ways to hack U.S. consumers’ sensitive personal
information. Dumpster diving, stolen or lost wallets
and mail fraud should still be concerns, but the digital age
of tablets, smartphones, PCs and Wi-Fi networks leaves
people more vulnerable than ever.
Have you ever stored credit card information on your
phone for added convenience to make payments in a
checkout lane? Do you ever store passwords in apps to
transfer funds between accounts? And what’s to keep
hackers from accessing a wireless network you check
your email on while you’re grabbing a quick cup of coffee?
“More than 15.4 million people a year will experience
identity theft, with an average loss of more than $1,000,”
said Jane Li, Mercury Insurance’s director of product
management. “When one access point closes due to
added levels of security, cyberattackers find another.
Insurance companies like Mercury provide services that
allow homeowners and renters to enjoy the convenience
of accessing their connected devices at home and on the
go, while also helping to protect customers from the potentially
devastating effects of criminal infiltration, cyberextortion
and identity theft.”
The following five do’s and don’ts can help stop criminals
in their tracks and protect your connected devices, as well
as your electronic identity.
* Do power down your devices. This disables the internet
connection, cutting off access to any personal information
stored on your computer, tablet or phone. Unattended machines,
especially if you are asleep or leave them at home
while on vacation, are easy targets for hackers.
* Don’t connect to unsecured wireless networks. Information
accessed on an open network, including email
passwords and sensitive bank information, is fair game
for hackers. Don’t make their jobs easier. Turn off Wi-Fi
access on your devices unless it’s a password-protected
network you trust.
* Do monitor your children’s device usage. It’s a good idea
to limit use of computers, tablets and phones to public
areas within the home like the living room or kitchen. This
makes it easier for parents to keep an eye on who their
kids are communicating with, especially on social media
or gaming sites, to help prevent the sharing of sensitive
information like full names, addresses or other things that
can be used for identity theft or other potentially dangerous
activities.
* Don’t discard important paperwork without shredding
it. If it has your name and address, thieves can take
advantage and open an account using your information.
Remember to shred expired insurance documents, vehicle
registrations, bills, loan pre-qualifications and other
paperwork that would allow someone to call in pretending
to be you. Check your credit reports at least twice a year
to ensure all accounts opened in your name are valid.
* Do install recommended updates. Smartphone, computer,
tablet and smart TV manufacturers, among other
providers of connected devices,
offer periodic software
updates to protect against
potential security breaches.
Chances are, if an update is
recommended, hackers have
already discovered a way to
Tips to Take Great Pet Pics Beetle Mania
Nov. 2019
NATURE 11
by: Coy Domecq
(StatePoint) Whether you’re hoping to make your dog an
Instagram sensation or you just want a nice portrait for the
mantle, you’ve likely discovered pets, in general, can be
elusive around cameras.
Check out these tips and tricks for getting your fur baby
to sit for the camera and look picture perfect, from e-tailer
Zulily, creative photographer, Taylor Graham:
• After choosing a great location for your shoot, give your
pet a few minutes to get comfortable with the new setting.
• If you’re shooting outside, situate your pet in a shaded
area. Direct sunlight can make your pet look greasy, and
distracting shadows can obscure important features. A flat,
overcast day makes for the most flattering pet photos.
• Get low to your pet’s level and frame the face tightly, focusing
on eyes for maximum impact. Remember to photograph
the most endearing parts of your pet. Often overlooked,
paws and ears can be some of the most expressive
and adorable features of your furry friend.
• Treats and squeaky toys are a given for getting pets to
focus, but make sure you’re using them to your advantage.
Hold the toy or treat as close to the lens as possible. This
will get your pet’s gaze right where you want it to be.
• Most cameras and camera phones have a “burst mode”
that takes many pictures in a row. Later you can select the
perfect frame.
• Don’t just pose your dog against a white wall. Add flair
with accessories that fit your pet’s personality. For unique
pet products at great prices, shop apps like Zulily that offer
quirky must-have items, stylish accessories, treats and
pampering products. Their 72-hour sales represent some of
the best deals in retail.
• With easy-to-use smartphone apps like VSCO and Photoshop:
Express, you can adjust brightness, color and sharpness
to bring a professional quality to images in seconds.
With a few tricks up your sleeve, you can take better pet
snapshots and capture some amazing memories of your
furry friend.
And now, for something completely different. In my
quest for a foragable Thanksgiving food product,
native to the area as a feature in this issue, it was a
struggle to identify something not introduced from abroad
or domesticated as a commodity. The lightbulb came on
when I remembered eating insects in Thailand and South
Korea. Sources from the Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) estimate about two billon of the human population
eat insects. Oddly, one survey indicates about 72% of
US residents are unwilling to even try insect consumption.
This is surprising considering that the US FDA actually
allows up to 30 insect parts per hundred grams of chocolate.
For those of you still reading, eating insects is not
as strange as it may seem and may actually be ahead of
its time. Incredibly, it is a resurgence of what was once
a food tradition here in the United States. Entomophagy,
the term referring to human consumption of insects, was
commonplace in early US history and even earlier in Native
American diets.
Why eat insects? They are exceedingly nutritious. Insect
protein content rivals that of almost any other animal
source. A 3.5-ounce serving of dried grasshopper contains
upwards of 28 grams of protein. They are everywhere and
there are lots of them. (Really, do I need to elaborate?)
According to the Smithsonian Museum, insects represent
approximately 1 gigaton (about 1,000,000,000 tons) of the
earth’s organic biomass, whereas total human biomass
represents a mere 0.06 gigatons. Most insect genera are
edible by humans. To answer the burning question, beetles
are the most popular selection. This practice could be a
key component in accomplishing what is termed as food
security and a viable food source, or even preference,
for those with expanded food tastes. Oh, yes the taste.
My experience with insect consumption is that they are
crunchy and nutty when dried, as with grasshopper and
crickets, and buttery and rich when enjoying steamed silkworm
larvae. There is an etiquette observed when eating
insects. Instead of reaching across the table to grab your
portion, ask politely to, “Please pass the mashed beetles
and gravy.”
Albemarle Eye Center
INSPIRATION
Here’s Why People With Diabetes Shouldn’t Skip Eye Appointments
If you develop proliferative diabetic retinopathy, a blinding
eye disease caused by diabetes, ophthalmologists
have two treatment options: Lasers or needles.
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy happens when abnormal
new blood vessels grow inside the eye, potentially leading
to bleeding or retinal detachment, which can cause vision
loss. The goal of treatment is to stop the growth of those
blood vessels and prevent vision loss. Traditionally, ophthalmologists
have used a laser to make tiny burns in the
retina, which cause the abnormal blood vessels to shrink
and prevent them from growing again.
Recently, ophthalmologists began using another method
– injecting a medication directly in the eye. This approach,
called anti-VEGF therapy, also helps stop the blood vessels
from growing or leaking.
Both methods can control blood vessel growth and preserve
vision. But researchers are now finding that there
may be an important difference between these treatments.
It appears that people treated with injections alone need
to be treated regularly and perhaps indefinitely to maintain
their vision. That means no skipped appointments. Ophthalmologists
say the consequence for interrupting this
treatment is steep: potential blindness.
Problem is, many people with diabetes don’t see their
ophthalmologists as regularly as they should. Things happen:
appointments are forgotten, other health issues crop
up, financial problems happen. But missing appointments
may be more devastating to your vision if you are treated
with injections alone compared with laser treatment, which
typically controls the disease permanently.
Two studies, conducted by ophthalmologists at Wills Eye
Hospital and the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center,
looked at people who didn’t return to their physician
for four to six months. Of those patients, those receiving
treatment with injections alone suffered significantly more
vision loss than those receiving laser treatment. One study
showed that nearly half the patients who had a major interruption
in anti-VEGF therapy suffered severe and often
irreversible vision loss.
“It is critical for patients to understand that anti-VEGF
drugs disappear from the eye within a month or two and
do not have a lasting effect in most cases,” said Mark W.
Johnson, MD, professor of Ophthalmology at the University
of Michigan. “Patients receiving this form of treatment
for proliferative diabetic retinopathy must continue
to receive injections on a regular basis. Otherwise, the
disease may progress with sometimes blinding consequences.
In contrast, the beneficial effect of adequate
laser treatment lasts indefinitely in most eyes.”
How Free Trade Increases Peaceful Interaction Between Nations
by: James Devereaux
Unilateral trade is no guarantee of peace, but the evidence suggests it beats the alternative.
November 2019
Reprinted with permission from fee.org
ECONOMICS 13
I
f goods don’t cross borders, soldiers will.” This
quote is often attributed to Frederic Bastiat.
Alas, no authoritative documentation has confirmed
he actually said it. Yet, it appears the pithy statement
is nonetheless correct.
The Relationship Between Trade and Peace
A recent study by Jong-Wha Lee and Ju Hyun
Pyun has found a strong correlation between
trade and peace. Examining a “large panel data
set of 243,225 country pair observations” over 50
years “confirms that an increase in bilateral trade
interdependence significantly promotes peace.”
But that is not all they found. Additionally, and most
importantly, they found that “global trade openness
significantly promotes peace.” This latter effect is
felt more so by countries far apart than those that
share borders.
This is significant empirical support for those who
have held that trade promotes peace along with
prosperity. Whether Bastiat said it or not, plenty
have contemplated the pacifying nature of trade,
of the altered incentives when the ability to access
markets is available.
Whatever threat China poses to the United States,
it doesn’t appear to improve by making trade more
difficult.
Political economist and sociologist Max Weber
wrote that a capitalist economy is “one which rests
on the expectation of profit by the utilization of
opportunities for exchange, that is on (formally)
peaceful chances of profit.” He contrasted this with
“acquisition by force,” a transaction he described as
“not expedient.” Not when compared to the peaceful
exchange, at least.
Making the cost to “truck, barter, and exchange”
high increases the relative appeal of taking goods
by force or occupation. Unfortunately, our most recent
policy rhetoric and efforts have focused on an
increase in tariffs and lowered trade that may result
in increased tension with other nations, particularly
China. Preventing goods from flowing between nations
serves only a protectionist instinct. These are
goods with pacifying externalities attached that we
have rejected.
Sweet Commerce
This is another tally on the board for the doux commerce
thesis. Translated as sweet commerce, the
thesis suggests that commerce has a softening
effect, trading violence for exchange. Most trace
the origin of the thesis to Montesquieu, who wrote
in his work The Spirit of the Laws:
Commerce cures destructive prejudices, and it is
an almost general rule that everywhere there are
gentle mores, there is commerce and that everywhere
there is commerce, there are gentle mores.”
Therefore, one should not be surprised if our mores
are less fierce than they were formerly. Commerce
has spread knowledge of the mores of all nations
everywhere; they have been compared to each
other, and good things have resulted from this.
This thesis has been defended by classical and
modern economists alike, from Adam Smith to
Deirdre McCloskey. The peaceable interaction,
the tempering influence, the gentle mores, have
been considered part of the societal gains from
commerce, both domestically and internationally,
and now another study has indicated this is so.
Commerce bonds distant and alien individuals. It
places them on equal footing; not equality as some
measure, but there is an inherent equality to market
participation that creates a forum of participation
for individuals. Denying access to markets has an
alienating and stratifying effect within communities.
It is no surprise this alienation duplicates across
borders when markets are constrained.
Unilateral Trade
Policies that lead toward conflict should be eschewed
for those that encourage openness and
cooperation. Trade is such a cooperative process.
It incurs fewer costs than dealing with conflict.
Policies that orient us toward greater trade across
borders create a path toward prosperity and peace.
It is part of the market process that generates price,
which Ludwig von Mises called “a social process.”
The temptation to use state power to prevent
trade arises from a protectionist outlook, one that
employs political power to protect some interests
over others.
The implication of this study—and years of history—is
best summarized by something Bastiat did
in fact say:
“Barriers result in isolation; isolation gives rise
to hatred; hatred, to war; war, to invasion. “What
difference does it make?” say the sophists. “Is it
not better to risk the possibility of invasion than to
accept the certainty of invasion?” And the people
believe them, and the barriers remain standing.
And yet, what analogy is there between an exchange
and an invasion? What possible similarity
can there be between a warship that comes to
vomit missiles, fire, and devastation on our cities,
and a merchant vessel that comes to offer us a
voluntary exchange of goods for goods?
Unilateral trade is no guarantee of peace, but the
evidence suggests it beats the alternative.
Dear Angry: Join the club. I hear from a lot of people that want
a safer world. A recent survey fond that 1/3 of adult Americans
fear going places in their communities. It is twice as high for
Hispanics as for whites. And 63% of parents fear their kids
may be in a mass shooting. We have a problem!
Dear Dr. Crime: What is house arrest? Mary Lou
Dear Mary Lou: Courts can sentence convicted offenders
to remain in their own home, not leaving the premises,
rather than go to jail. The State of Florida has used that option
since the mid-1980s and report that incarceration rates have
dropped markedly since the program’s inception. The crooks
pay restitution, pay the State to offset the cost of supervision,
and work to support dependents and families. Sounds good .
Dear Dr. Crime: Does capital punishment reduce crimes(1)?
Victim.
Dear Victim: Research in a law journal reported that capital
SPECKLED TROUT
By: Jimmy Fleming
T
he fall speckled trout or as some say
“Spotted Sea Trout” fishing down east
has been on fire this year. Limits of tasty
trout have been easy to come by in Croatan,
Roanoke, and Pamlico Sounds since mid
summer and early fall. It appears that the
trout population has rebounded from the
freezing winter of two years ago that cold
stunned much of the trout population in our
area. Trout season was closed for a while after
that freeze event and both size limits and
creel limits were reduced. You can now keep
four speckled trout per day over 14 inches
which is a blessing since flounder season
and striper season are both closed in the
Pamlico sound fishery. Anglers are catching
trout along the marshy banks of the sounds
using light tackle with a variety of lures. The
lures used range from the old standbys such
as Mirrolures to the new soft plastics like
Zman.
Another great way to catch Specks is on top
water lures such as the Spook Jr or Skitterwalk
which can bring about amazing action
at times. I have thoroughly enjoyed my
share of trout fishing over the past couple of
months. My favorite method is easing along
the marshy banks and points of Pamlico
Sound with my 2500 light set up using a ¼
ounce jig head with a 4” soft plastic … the
“thump” of a trout bite on this gear is amazing.
Along with the fun of catching these
great fish, you also have the pleasure of
eating one of the best tasting fish in eastern
North Carolina. Speckled Trout are one of
the easiest fish to clean and can be prepared
so many great ways. My favorite way to cook
them is to pan fry boneless skinless filets
coated in Louisiana Fish Fry Crispy Breader
… that is outstanding. I also like to blacken
filets and broil them in the oven as well. You
just can’t beat the Speckled Trout in eastern
NC for a great catch and quality table fare!!
16 BEAUTY
Makeup Trends to Stun this Fall Season
Foods good for
your skin
We tread in a world currently obsessed with online
makeup tutorials, makeup moguls, and the high-rising
makeup industry. We used to spend highly on clothes, and
shoes, unaware of one of the aspects which elevate the look
to another level - makeup. Only recently have we understood
its importance, and thus we see how vital it is to be in
trend in this sphere also.
Berries
Not to worry, because we are here to let you know of what
makeup to don this fall season. Get your pen and paper
ready:
• Smokey Eyes
Bringing the punk back, the smoky eyes return with a twist.
They no longer are untidy, smudged remnants of makeup.
Rather, they have made their entrance in a simpler yet
elegant look. Opt for brown eyeliner, and pair it up with a bit
of black eyeliner at the end, as exhibited by Tom Ford. Put
on mascara for an enhanced look, and find yourself making
a fashion statement. For those who still wish to invoke the
rock-girl inside them, black kohl is a woman’s best friend
when wishing to go bold and noticeable.
Carrots
• All Things Glitter
Those who prefer funk to punk, and want pops of color in
their makeup routine, should hold onto their hearts for this
fall has brought the glitter trend. Especially suitable for those
who wish to stand out from the crowd, this trend consists
of glittery eyes. Put on shimmery eye-shadow, and pair it
up with flecks of glitter. A rather different look could also be
glitter outlining the eyes, but no eye-shadow. If you want to
divert attention from your eyes, a metallic-glittery lip could
also achieve just that.
Green Tea
• The Glow from Within
The arrival of fall means drier skin. Thus this season calls
for a makeup trend to ensure the glow doesn’t escape from
your face. Instead of opting for loads of light foundation, the
highlighter should be your go-to makeup tool. Giving a glow
to the face like a baby’s skin, this season is all about looking
shiny and radiant.
Eggs
• The Red Stain
Perhaps the boldest yet elegant makeup aspect has
always been the red lip. This season, the red lip became a
red stain, meaning high pigmentation. Whether you opt for a
bright-red, matte, or deep burgundy, this trend ensures you
become the center of attention. Rub some powder on the
lip to simplify the effect, or apply heavy lip gloss to makes
heads turn. This trend is bound to make others go weak in
the knees.
Fall Shoes
Make a Fashion Statement this Fall
November 2019
FASHION 17
Embroidered
Bootie
season change calls for wardrobe change. Out with the
A old, and in with the fashionable, is the notion to follow.
However, with the large variety of trends donning magazine
covers this season, we understand your confusion in what
works best.
Fret not, for we tell you the best and most ‘in’ trends this fall,
to ensure you make the fashion statement you have been
waiting for:
• Plaid is back.
Suede Flats
Taking you back to your school times, plaid returns as a musthave
staple in your wardrobe. In case you wish for a subtle
look, a simple solid-colored plaid dress paired with stilettos
and dangling earrings is bound to win hearts. On the other
hand, if you wish to go all in, wearing plaid over plaid is also
trending. A light-colored plaid top, with a dark-shaded plaid
coat on top, and you will stun. Numerous designers have already
given their thumbs-up to all things plaid on the runway,
Chanel being one of many. As plaid makes its return, play
your part in establishing this trend further with a simple plaid
shirt, perhaps tucked into a plaid skirt – giving schoolgirl but
cool girl vibes.
• Trench Coat (Read: Cape)
Open Toe
Buckle
The trench coat has always been in style, but this season,
it has been improvised to make the Trench Cape. They are
loose and airy, thus being immensely comfortable to wear.
Belted just above the waist, they complement your figure,
alongside upholding ideas of fashion. If you opt for the long
ones, these capes trail behind you, ensuring you become a
head-turner wherever you go. Whilst short trench coats are
also trending this fall. Pair them up with skin-tight pants and
high heeled-boots, for a look to remember.
• Ruffles
Metallic Leather
In case you are a fan of vintage clothing, hold on to your
heart for this fall is all about bringing back ruffles. Enhancing
the beauty of all outfits it is paired with, ruffles have a certain
fashionable vibe to them. Whether you couple them with
bright prints, or with a simple polka-dotted dress, get ready
to receive a lot of compliments. Vintage, yet modern? Yes
please!
• Silk Scarves
Snakeskin Prints
When deciding what completes a look, who can forget the
ever-important scarves? A silk scarf exclaims elegance
alongside fashion. The ways in which a scarf can be used are
numerous. Pair it up with a V-neck dress, or wear it stylishly
with denim shirts. Wear it as a bandanna, or a belt, or you can
even tie it to your bag. Multiple uses, and always in trend, a
silk scarf is a must-have.
Health and Nutrition Strategies for
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Do You Know What’s in
Your Dietary Supplements?
Warren is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Batchelors degree in Nutrition Science.
What’s in your diet?
Last month I was guest speaker at a breast cancer
event (P.I.N.K.I.E Party) given by Vicky Walton’s
“It’s in the Genes”, LLC . Vicky is a two time breast cancer
survivor who’s enthusiasm is infectious.
It was a wonderful event and I was honored to participate.
I love a Q and A format, and we did a Facebook
Live, so I had a big audience. I started by identifying
myself as a fourteen year cancer survivor, a United
States Government food safety expert, and how that
melded into my strategies. I hope I was influential
enough for the attendees and their Facebook family
audiences, to use this column as a resource when
going food shopping. So, if you’re new to the column,
welcome.
Including my military service, I’ve been honored to be
a public servant since I was seventeen years old, and
I’m 80. Most of my public service was in food safety as
a New York State Meat Inspector, USDA Inspector-In-
Charge, Supervisory Food Technologist and Senior Staff
in the Food Safety Inspection Service in Washington,
D.C. In that Senior Staff capacity I worked closely with
the FDA, EPA, and Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS).
I understand how the United States agricultural food
chain works, and how Washington manages and regulates
it. I understand the mechanism of how substances
get into your food. I monitor and report on pertinent
FSIS and FDA recall press releases, from an insider
prospective. That said.
I’m promoting keeping a daily food log. I’ve kept one
during my January- February optimizing period when I
do my modified Mediterranean diet. Since I get quarterly
blood panels, I’m able to correlate my diet with my lab
results. It’s a good idea to know what substances you’re
putting in your body.
I consider dietary fiber my damage control, “Go To”
supplement. Dietary fiber lowers bad cholesterol levels
and regulates pH levels, fiber is thought to prevent
microbes from producing cancerous cells in the colon.
It works by moving food through your digestive system,
You want to digest the decaying animal tissue, as soon
as possible. The days when I eat meat, I increase my
fiber, and fluid intake.
I use Omega 3 supplements as my primary antiinflammatory.
I accept the inconclusive research that it
protects your heart, and coronary system. Now that the
USDA is inspecting fish, and plant based fish is on the
horizon, Fish will be a weekly food staple.
Vitamin C is the most powerful, inexpensive, antioxidant/ANTI-AGING
supplement on the market and is
vitally important for immune system health. .
Finally, medical cancer strategies are trending toward
personalized applications. Food should be treated the
same way. The next time you shop grab some fiber,
plenty of options.
Remember, keep a daily log of what you consume, reconcile
it with your routine blood labs.
Food is medicine.
November 30th 9:00am - 1:00pm
(StatePoint) Dietary supplements help people get the
nutrients they need to thrive, and 77 percent of Americans
take them, according to the Council for Responsible Nutrition
(CRN). However, experts say that in order to make
smart choices down the line, it is necessary to understand
changes being made to product labels.
“The Food and Drug Administration has mandated that all
dietary supplement products feature updated labeling by
January 2021 to reflect the evolution of the American diet,
as well as advancements in nutrition science,” says Brian
Wommack, senior vice president of communications at
CRN. “Larger manufacturers will comply by January 2020,
and many other manufacturers will be introducing the new
labels early, so it’s smart for everyone to get familiar with
the updates now.”
Eighty-two percent of Americans agree that the information
on the label helps them make purchasing decisions, and
being label wise, according to Wommack, means being
committed to reading product labels, having knowledge of
what information is featured and why, and making smart,
well-informed purchasing decisions.
“While some of the changes to the label are more obvious
than others, all of them are important to understand,” says
Wommack.
To help you understand the transition, CRN has identified
some of the noticeable aspects of the new Supplement
Facts label:
• New Daily Values (DVs) will reflect the latest nutrition science
and changes in American diets.
• Vitamins A, D, and E will change from amounts in International
Units (IU), to the more common measures of
milligrams (mg) and micrograms (mcg).
• Folic acid, an important nutrient before and during pregnancy,
will be listed as folate and measured in micrograms
of dietary folate equivalents (DFEs).
• If sugar is added to the product, you will see the amount
and percent DV.
To learn more about the coming changes, as well as for
more tips and advice on reading supplement labels, visit
