Geoff and Michelle Butler started Ilam
Watchmakers on the corner of Waimari
and Maidstone Road back in 2001 and in
all that time, this family business has been
too busy to look back.
However, this year is full of milestones
for them. Geoff is celebrating 40 years since
he entered the trade as an apprentice, and
they have just successfully renovated and
repaired the historic Arts Centre clock,
which has been out of action for some time.
“We had to bring part of it back to the
workshop, give it a complete overhaul,
service and reassemble it,” explains Geoff.
Now, the clock is working fine and back in
its rightful place, symbolising yet another
step in Christchurch’s road to post-earthquake
recovery.
However, the team at Ilam Watchmakers
is usually more down-to-earth, providing a
service for the public and jewellers across
New Zealand. They carry out all kinds of
repairs and servicing on watches from replacing
a battery in budget-friendly fashion
watch to taking care of Rolex, Omega and
other higher end watches worth thousands
of dollars. Every customer gets the same
friendly service because the team knows
that each timepiece means something to
the owner. They also sell watches including
Boccia Titanium, Citizen, Olympic, colourful
Ice-Watch, Pulsar, Casio Sports watches,
and the current hot-fashion item – pocket
watches, in this case by the prestigious firm
Royal London.
Although they started out with only Geoff
and Michelle working in the shop plus occasional
help from their parents, they now
have six full-time watch and clock repairers
including their apprentice plus three parttime
technicians as well as an administration
team which has grown to four, and
even their teenage children get involved.
This talented team can also turn their
skills to working on clocks of all ages from
precious heirlooms to affordable modern
pieces that would benefit from an internal
upgrade to keep them looking great and
working well for years to come. They sell
beautiful clocks, too, including carriage
clocks and barometers which are great as
gifts to mark a special occasion.
Above all, they are proud of their friendliness.
