Gangs<br />
Public sector agencies and CSOs provided<br />
education and prevention programmes<br />
that diverted young people<br />
away from gangs and the resultant involvement<br />
in the Criminal Justice<br />
System (CJS);<br />
A number <strong>of</strong> community based<br />
programmes aimed at prevention,<br />
diversion and reducing gang activity<br />
were introduced by the DOYA including:<br />
Block Draughts Tournament,<br />
Silver Hill Road Tennis Tournament,<br />
Citunity Project;<br />
Young people not involved in<br />
structured activity and with low levels<br />
<strong>of</strong> group affiliation were more at risk for<br />
engaging in gang activities;<br />
The NSCP provided a primary prevention<br />
programme that provided protection<br />
and reduced the risk factors for<br />
juvenile delinquency;<br />

Sports for development programmes<br />
attracted high participation rates per<br />
annum and were effective in increase<br />
life chances and reducing gang activities;<br />
There were consistent efforts to publicize<br />
positive activities by young people<br />
using a variety <strong>of</strong> media to counterbalance<br />
the negative reporting <strong>of</strong> gang activity;<br />
The MCSY and other stakeholders provide<br />
platforms for young people to be<br />
engaged in entrepreneurship, income<br />
generating activity, counselling and<br />
mentorship to divert young people from<br />
the CJS.<br />

There were increasing numbers <strong>of</strong><br />
young men participating in development<br />
programmes through the DOYA<br />
in the areas <strong>of</strong>: Digital Media, the horse<br />
racing industry, sports, performing and<br />
visual arts and ICTs;<br />
