Evaluation of The National Youth Policy of Barbados 2011—2016
change in the political process.
GOAL (I): To get young people to better
protect our ENVIRONMENT
practices to sustain the environment. In
this regard, the recommendations from
the Green Environment Scoping Study
2014 would seem to provide a necessary
policy roadmap (GESS pp13).
Overall, the objectives of this goal were
met with varying levels of success.
There was evidence that both public
and private agencies were working to
protect the environment and that
young people were involved in a number
of initiatives to preserve and protect
the environment. The general
feeling was that there appeared to be a
significant gap between awareness and
availability of requisite skills and expertise
in sufficient quantities to meet the
needs of the green economy. One of the
challenges however was the limited public/private
financing in this area which
reduced the reach of sustainable environmental
programmes. Another challenge
found was that a number of young people
were still not fully cognizant of the value
added from the environment and took its
benefits for granted. There was therefore
a need for continuous education and involvement
of more stakeholders at the
community level in delivering sensitization
campaigns and promotion of healthy
