Youth Development Programme
The Youth Development
Programme
(YDP)
aimed to promote
the social, economic
and cultural
development
of youth
through a series of activities targeting persons
ages 9 – 29 across communities.
The YDP was identified as one of the major
implementation mechanisms and driver
of the outputs in relation to youth social
development and boosting employment.
The YDP addressed the concerns,
issues, aspirations and prospects of Barbadian
youth in order to achieve the vision
of the NYP of:
“Well educated, confident, healthy,
responsible, progressive, creative and
enterprising young men and women
who are fully involved in the sustainable
cultural, political, economic, social
and physical development of their Caribbean
nation.”
Programme/Activities for 2011 – 2016
The programmes/activities for the YDP in
2011-2016 were affected by significant
budget cuts. This resulted in a realignment
of programmes priorities and required
that YDP worked collaboratively
with public and private sector agencies to
produce highly visible and impactful programmes
at reduced costs. The core services
offered included, inter alia:
National Sports and Cultural Training
Programmes;
HIV/AIDS Projects;
Community Projects;
Assistance to Youth Groups;
Youth Achieving Results Programmes
in Cultural and Visual Arts (targeting
“At Risk Youth”);
Counselling services for “at risk youth”
who are in programmes and projects
facilitated by the YDP;
Research;
Leadership Training for youth organization;
Secretarial services for Youth Groups;
Subvention to the following or
ganitions:
Barbados Youth Development Council
(umbrella organisation for youth
groups);
Boys Scouts Association of Barbados;
Girl Guides Association of Barbados
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
