Public Realm<br />

Social interaction is encouraged by comfortable and stimulating streets<br />

and open spaces. Considerations include:<br />

– Balance active focal areas with quite zones for rest and people<br />

watching;<br />

– Open spaces need to be visible with views across;<br />

– Provide seating area choices;<br />

– Take advantage <strong>of</strong> solar orientation;<br />

– Consider the needs <strong>of</strong> all users, including children, the elderly<br />

and physically impaired;<br />

– Activate spaces with programming and events; and<br />

– Recognize natural, pedestrian desire lines.<br />

Safety<br />

Vital to the success <strong>of</strong> any urban environment are safety and security.<br />

The creation <strong>of</strong> lively, urban areas which are easy to overlook and<br />

oversee, have been demonstrated as the most effective measures for<br />

community safety and crime prevention. Safety consideration should<br />

include:<br />

– Ensuring natural surveillance and human presence;<br />

– Providing safe routes that minimize conflict;<br />

– Designing in community ‘ownership’ <strong>of</strong> public spaces;<br />

– Creating physical security measures that are ornamental in their<br />

design; and<br />

– Exits and entries to buildings should be visible and easily<br />

monitored.<br />
