The opportunity came about 

when a parent won an auction 

for McCaw’s time at the Chalky 

Carr Trust fundraising dinner, 

of which McCaw is the patron. 

She spoke to the team about 

the importance of looking 

within yourself, giving 100 per 

cent and never giving up on 

your dreams. 

She stressed the importance 

of staying focused on school 

work as well as the need for a 

career after sport. 

The team will be travelling to 

the AIMS Games in Tauranga 

in September. 

They hope to place in the top 

five at that event. 

The team currently play in 

division two in the Canterbury 

Hockey Kwik Sticks 11-aside 

competition. 

They currently sit at the top of

THE FIRST stage of a commercial 

centre in Belfast may soon get the 

green light after almost 20 years of 

planning. 

Belfast Village Centre Ltd has 

applied for a land use consent to 

develop a commercial centre on 

Main North Rd, near the corner of 

Johns Rd. 

The 11,295 sq m proposal includes 

a supermarket as the key anchor 

tenant and several retail, food and 

office spaces. 

A city council spokeswoman said 

the consent is still being processed 

and no decision has been made yet. 

Planning for the site dates back 

to the early 2000s when a sequence 

of Environment Court cases began 

between Apple Fields Ltd, the city 

council and Environment Canterbury 

as to the zoning of the land. 

The application covers stage one 

of the development. 

Future stages, which will involve 

separate consent applications, are 

anticipated to include community 

facilities such as a health care and

CHRISTCHURCH continues to grow. 

Our front page article today reveals more 

commercial development is planned in 

the north-west, this one near the corner of 

Main North Rd and Johns Rd. 

It comes on the back of major roading changes to the area and 

fast residential growth. People mean money and where there’s 

people and money, business sets up. 

There’s never been any rocket science in that. 

The Belfast plan includes a supermarket as the key anchor tenant 

– no surprises there – and retail and food outlets. 

It was first mooted 20 years ago by the late Tom Kain, of horse 

racing and Apple Fields fame, and his wife Tessa. She is behind 

the latest application.

Rats invade park in St Albans 


RATS HAVE taken up 

residence in Abberley Park, 

St Albans, threatening the 

monarch butterfly and fantail 

populations. 

Traps have been set to rid the 

park of rats. Friends of Abberley 

Park group member Patricia 

Wallace said butterfly numbers 

had been noticeably dwindling. 

“When concerns were raised 

that rats might be eating 

butterflies in the trees at night, it 

immediately spiked our interest. 

We also have quite a lot of 

fantails and we know rats eat the 

eggs and fledglings of our native 

birds like these,” she said. 

City council manager 

community parks Al Hardy said 

while no decisions have been 

made in relation to rat control, 

cameras, traps and a small 

number of mice and rat traps 

have shown evidence of rats in 

the park. 

Only one rat nest has been 

found so far, after a dog had a 

particular interest with one tree. 

“We shook the trees and 

we saw rats running in the 

branches,” said Ms Wallace. 

Ms Wallace is calling on 

any volunteers who could help 

to reduce the problem, and is 

urging the public to report any 

information if they see rats in 

the park. 

She said all parties involved 

want to be careful about what 

sort of traps that are set. 

“Because it’s a public park, it’s 

bounded by domestic buildings 

which will probably have cats 

and dogs and there are children, 

too, who enjoy the park, too, so 

we can’t be having any poison

baits.” She believes the number 

of rats in Christchurch has 

increased since the earthquakes. 

“There is still an awful lot 

of buildings in demolition or 

rebuild states in St Albans.” 

‘We’re optimistic that the 

new traps might make a big 

difference and we are asking 

people to notify us if they see 

any rat nests in the park,” she 

said.

The principal of Isleworth 

School will retire at the end of 

this year. Jeanette Shearer has 

been principal at the school for 

12 years. Mrs Shearer also has 

several other roles including 

being the former president of the 

Canterbury Primary Principals’

Waimairi-iri Community of 

Learning. The board of trustees 

will now seek a replacement to 

begin in 2019. BOT chairwoman 

Heather Algar said Mrs Shearer 

has been a “pinnacle part of the 

growth of Isleworth School over

WORK ON PUMP STATIONS 

The city council is targeting 

work on pump stations in the 

north-west of the city to improve 

well head security, in order to 

stop chlorinating the water at 

those pump stations. Water 

supply improvement programme 

manager Helen Beaumont said 

the pump stations involved 

have a mix of above ground and 

below ground well heads. Those 

identified for remedial works are 

Grampian, Farrington, Burnside, 

Grassmere, Hills and Mays. 

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said she will 

remain determined to have city 

council resolve the chlorination 

issue within the 12 months.

I RECENTLY voted against 

giving $20,000 of ratepayer 

money to Te Ora Hou 

Otautahu to fund a social work 

programme to address needs 

such as mental health, and as 

the chairman of our board 

that has attracted some media 

attention. 

It would be fair to say I’ve 

copped some heavy criticism 

this week for that call, but 

equally so – I have been heartened 

by the phone calls from 

locals pleased that I have spoken 

out for ratepayers. 

Don’t get me wrong, I am all 

for supporting people who are 

in need of help, and am a strong 

believer in the social investment 

approach that was championed 

by former Prime Minister Bill 

English. Where I disagree is 

over who should fund it – I am 

strongly in the camp that says 

this is, and should be, a responsibility 

of central government 

not local government. 

I hear from residents across 

the Fendalton, Waimairi 

and Harewood Wards on a 

daily basis with concerns over 

roading, water chlorination, 

cycleway spending and now 

likely rate rises as a result of the 

city council’s Long Term Plan 

2018. This current LTP has quite 

rightly pointed out that there is 

a limited pool of funds that can 

be used in our city to improve 

everything we need done, and 

that additional spending comes 

out of the pockets of all us who 

pay rates. 

With infrastructure pressures, 

rate increases and ballooning 

city council debt the only responsible 

call I could make was 

to point out that local ratepayers 

shouldn’t be subsidising the 

Government.

New bid for Edgeware Pool funding 


A GIVE-A-LITTLE campaign 

was set to be launched yesterday 

in a bid to begin fundraising for 

the new Edgeware Pool. 

The pool has a budget of $5 

million which will see an 25m 

outdoor pool and a 14m indoor 

pool. 

A launch event to unveil a 

new logo and the fundraising 

campaign was set to be held 

yesterday at the old pool 

entrance on Edgeware Rd. 

One of the longest members 

of the St Albans Swim Club 

and president for many years, 

Brian Gardner, attended the 

launch, along with Christchurch 

Central MP Duncan Webb, 

city councillors, Papanui-Innes 

Community Board members 

and other supporters from the 

community. 

Nor’West News released plans 

by Apollo Designs, who designed 

the new QE II, for the pool in 

April. 

The complex will have no 

operating cost for ratepayers as it 

is an entirely community-driven 

project 

Pool spokesman Paul 

Somerville said the support from 

design agency ‘imagic’ for the 

logo provided a professional edge 

to the important part of the pool 

project. 

“Raising money is obviously 

key to the success of getting 

Edgeware Pool open. We have a 

much smaller budget than other 

proposed pool projects around 

the city. However, it’s still a 

significant amount of money.” 

“We have already raised 

more than $150,000 to fund the 

project to this point, as well as 

an equivalent amount in probono 

services and consultancy 

fees which was needed to get 

the resource consent. We are 

extremely grateful. And now 

imagic is doing this pro bono 

which is extraordinary,” said Mr 

Somerville. 

Imagic account director Tim 

Thomas said the agency feels 

particularly excited about being 

involved in the project as it is not 

far from where the new pool will 

be located. 

“We are on Colombo St, on the 

Edgeware side of Bealey Ave, just 

down the road from where the 

new pool will be. We are looking 

forward to popping up the road 

for a swim at lunchtimes,” he 

said. 

Mr Somerville believes there’s 

a sense that a new pool on 

the original site will heal the 

hurt which resulted from city 

council closing and subsequently 

bulldozing the pool more than 

a decade ago. “The original 

Edgeware pool was built in 

1934 after a major fundraising 

drive by locals and was run by 

the St Albans Swim Club, until 

the city council took over its 

management in 2002. The rest 

they say, is history and with so 

many pools in schools no longer 

operating, the importance of 

exercise (and access to facilities), 

and the number of young people 

who can’t swim, we believe the 

need for this facility grows every 

year,” said Mr Somerville.

Kittens keep stretch classes purring

CAT RESCUE Christchurch has 

teamed up with the Altitude Pole 

and Fitness studio to bring kitten 

stretch classes to the city. 

The two 90min stretch 

sessions sold out well in advance 

due to the promise of cuddles 

with rescued kittens during the 

class.

the fundraiser was intended to be 

a one-off, but a second class was

awe,” she said. 

Miss Andersen, who lives in 

Parklands, said it was great to be

the kittens, as well as the class

As a non-profit organisation, 

CRC uses its fundraised money 

to pay for the medical bills of the 

cats it rescues.

Patrick said because the organisation 

does not have a centre, there 

is normally nowhere for people to 

go and see the cats available for 

adoption. 

“This brings them all out for 

people to actually see . . . and they 

are all on Trade Me waiting to be 

adopted” 

The first two classes raised 

$800 for CRC and inspired 

several people to sign up as volunteers. 

Miss Andersen said the classes 

also resulted in two kittens being 

adopted. She said as a cat lover, it 

was difficult to resist taking one 

home. 

She thinks there will be a 

demand for more kitten stretch 

classes in the future, but it would 

involve a lot of organisation to fit 

them around the studio’s already 

full schedule.

It saw the current batch 

of students win ‘best 

communication with the

regional competition held

The cast and directors 

advanced through to the 

national competition in 

Wellington, where they 

won three awards. They 

took out best comedy, best 

student directed ensemble 

(for Ruby and Emily) and 

the most convincing onstage 

connection, which 

was won by Ruby and 

Sophie McClean as Celia 

and Rosalind. The girls also 

participated in workshops 

run by actors and directors, 

saying the highlights 

of their trip included 

a special welcome by 

Governor-General Dame 

Patsy Reddy, exploring 

Government House and 

taking in the Wellington 

theatre culture. 

For the competition, the 

students were required to 

come up with a setting, 

interpretation and to 

‘breathe new life’ into 

Shakespeare to make it 

relevant for a modern 

audience.

and Healing 

A one night only event in Christchurch 

In May 2009, nationally acclaimed interior designer Hayley Brown was 

diagnosed with breast cancer. She quit her career of 25 years to find some 

solution that didn’t include chemo, radiation or surgery. Together with her 

partner, nutritionist and high performance coach Todd Balfour, she travelled 

the world looking for better ways of dealing with cancer. 

Journeying through Australia, Bali, Spain and finally landing in the USA. Hayley 

had Hyperthermia in LA for just 14 weeks and her 5cm tumour disintegrated 

completely. She was cleared of cancer using a PET scan in July 2010. 

In May 2013 the cancer came back with a vengeance, chances of survival 

looked slim. Over the duration of her illness, Hayley lost everything, her health, 

her home, her career - all her money had been used up in the fight to stay 

alive. She was now dying and in debt. “I was given a round of chemo to subdue 

the tumour that had grown out through my skin. I never had any surgery - it 

was potentially life threatening so I turned it down. I was discharged and the 

oncologist said that she would ‘manage me forward’ (till I died).” 

“But I wasn’t thinking about dying, I was thinking about living and wanting to 

help others…” In 2014, despite apparently having limited time, Hayley and Todd 

began a new venture called “Health Evolution” on the Kāpiti Coast. 

“Not knowing how long I was going to be around, I took on a month-to-month 

lease in a commercial building. That was five years ago. To the amazement of 

oncology, and the landlord, I am still alive and my cancer is in remission.” 

So what happened? What changed the game?

Clark eyes up water polo champs in Hungary

CHRIST’S COLLEGE water 

polo exponent Louis Clark 

has been selected in the New 

Zealand team for the youth world 

championships in Hungary in 

August. 

The 16-year-old from Fendalton 

impressed selectors at a national 

selection camp in Auckland three 

weeks ago. 

“It was a new environment for 

me, those trials, and I was a little 

nervous to start with, but I felt 

better the longer it went and to be 

selected is such a huge honour,” 

he said. 

Clark said he followed his older 

brother into the sport at the start 

of high school and has loved it 

ever since. 

“I’ve always loved being physical 

in sports and water polo is like 

rugby in water,” he said. 

Clark also splits his time 

between competitive swimming 

and surf lifesaving at the Taylor’s 

Mistake club. 

Between his three sporting 

ambitions, he has 12 regular trainings 

a week which doesn’t leave 

room for much else. 

He said being able to have the 

right balance between power and 

agility was crucial for water polo. 

While Europe tends to dominate 

the scene, Clark said he and 

the rest of the New Zealand 

team are eager to test themselves 

against the world’s best. 

“It will be good to see where we 

are at and test ourselves against 

the best of what is out there,” he 

said.

The story behind Papanui’s Rayburn Ave

RAYBURN AVE, formerly 

called Ingmire St, runs parallel 

to Papanui Rd between Paparoa 

St and Grants Rd. The street 

occupies an area originally 

carved out of rural sections 302 

and 307. 

In 1913, 11 sections in a new 

housing development on Ingmire 

St were advertised in The Press. It 

was claimed that it was ‘the last 

block of land suitable for subdivision 

in the locality’ and that the 

new street was ‘properly made 

with concrete channelling and 

asphalt pavements.’ 

Perhaps the four years of war 

slowed building development, 

as in 1920 there were still building 

lots available in this street, 

but the coming decade saw a 

boom in the construction of new 

housing in south Papanui and 

Ingmire St was no exception. 

The Californian bungalow, 

characterised by street-facing 

double gables complemented 

with shingles, dominated in the 

1920s, while in the next decade 

the elegant English bungalow 

HISTORY: A 1920s Californian bungalow on Rayburn Ave. 

with its hipped roof and more 

complex window joinery was 

popular. After the war, the more 

basic bungalow, developed by 

Paramount Homes, made an 

appearance at the north-eastern 

end of the street. 

It is possible that a change in 

the name of the street had added 

to its popularity as the northern 

end of Ingmire St had been notoriously 

swampy and, although 

drained before subdivision, its 

name had done little to inspire 

confidence in potential residents. 

In 1926, the street became Rayburn 

Ave, although in 1932 an 

article in The Press noted the apparent 

anomaly that the avenue 

was treeless. It is not clear when 

the planting occurred; unlike 

neighbouring Perry and Dormer 

St, Rayburn Ave was not a designated 

memorial street, a status 

which attracted kerb side planting 

after World War 2. The introduction 

of street-side trees to 

Rayburn Ave must have occurred 

between 1932 and 1943, the latter 

the date of a city council minute 

scheduling future tree planting 

in south Papanui streets where, it 

was noted, that ‘Rayburn Ave had 

already been done’. 

Today, Rayburn Ave is a pleasant 

and popular residential street. 

Many of the original houses have 

been modified but most of these 

enhancements have been sensitively 

designed and the street has 

maintained much of its original 

character. 

In 2016, Rayburn Ave was one 

of several in this neighbourhood 

to face the threat of reclassification 

to permit more intensive 

housing development. 

Eventually an independent 

hearing panel ruled against this 

application and hopefully the 

street will be able to retain its 

distinctive charm based on the 

well preserved timber bungalows 

that characterised the inter-war 

period.

Gym and Physio in sydenham, created 

a program to help stroke survivors. 

Their specialised exercise program was 

established to work in collaboration with 

the Burwood stroke rehabilitation team. 

Participants raved so much about the

now grown from one weekly class to four 

weekly classes. New classes have also been

suffered from Osteoporosis, Intermittent

and injury prevention classes can lead to 

continued gym membership at a reduced

“Centre for senior Wellbeing”. Here you

Get the right 

choice for winter 

All houses require air exchange in order 

to stay fresh and dry. No one likes to live 

in a stuffy, smelly, damp home. Indoor air 

quality is important for the health of the 

occupants. Houses can have many sources of 

contaminants, such as bathrooms, kitchens, 

pets, smokers, and even furnishings. Opening 

the windows can refresh the air, but is not 

always an option for security reasons and can 

also lead to heat energy being lost to outside. 

Although older houses have small gaps 

around windows and doors, you want to be 

able to control the flow of air. You don’t want 

air coming in to the bathroom or kitchen and 

pushing the soiled air around the house. It 

is better to expel the air out of kitchens and 

bathrooms to outside. This will draw air in 

from the rest of the house to replace the air that 

has been removed. 

Modern houses are very airtight and 

theoretically require a source of incoming air 

to allow kitchen and bathroom extraction to 

work optimally. Ventilation systems should be 

low air velocity and low air pressure so as not 

to cause draughts. 

There are two main types of ventilation 

system: Positive pressure and Balanced 

pressure. Positive pressure systems, such as the 

Dry-Matic, bring filtered, warmed attic air into 

the house, which then percolates through the 

rooms, pushing the damper stale air out. 

Balanced pressure systems bring in a 

similar amount of air to the amount they 

exhaust. Balanced pressure systems with Heat 

Exchange, such as the HEX390, use the heat 

of the outgoing air to warm the incoming 

air from outside. These are the most energy 

efficient systems available, as they recover up 

to 80% of the energy in the air, rather than 

losing it to outside. Heat exchangers work just 

as well cooling incoming air when the house is 

cooled in summer. 

The NZ building code has recommended 

air exchange rates for houses. To ascertain 

the required airflow for your home, please

Choosing the right heat 

pump for your home 

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, 

most homes include at least one heat pump, 

if not a whole heating solution. They can 

provide cheap, clean heat and are much 

more convenient than a log burner as you 

just need to press a button. But how do you 

decide what is best? Choosing the right 

sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum 

comfort levels. Every situation varies and 

it is therefore important to get professional

The range varies from wall mounted high 

walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, 

ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted 

central heating systems allowing you to have

vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a 

place that will not be constantly blowing on 

you. Also important, is the location of the 

outdoor unit. Most people do not want their 

outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor 

entertaining area or right outside their 

bedroom window. 

Choose a brand you can trust. Many 

brands have come and gone over the years 

but there are a number of manufacturers 

who provide reputable and reliable products. 

All brands vary in their energy efficiency, 

quietness of systems and price, so it depends 

on your application as to which will be most 

suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, 

Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and

and hamlets in Long Island, New York that form a popular seaside resort and one of the

Google search The Hamptons in Christchurch and you will come across a few parallel 

observations. A husband and wife team with a passion for Canterbury homes, villages

he first time I woke up with a cold nose in my brand 

new home, I was shocked. How could this be? The 

cool, calm, collected one and I had planned for our 

home to be well insulated against Canterbury’s 

cold winters. Turns out, not well enough. We’d 

even assured a well-meaning friend we had ample 

insulation (yes, Duncan, you were right). I’ve worked out where we 

fell short in hindsight. Our home was designed by highly respected 

Christchurch architect the late Peter Beaven, for a magic little 

Port Hills site, where he planned to live in with his wife Lesley. 

Sadly Peter died before realising his plans. We bought them and 

employed Archology in Sydney, where we were living at the time, to 

prepare the construction drawings and specifications. Compared to 

Australia, the R values for insulation would have looked high. Our 

talented young builder, Sam McCarthy, would never have queried 

the levels because they were standard practice around town. So it 

wasn’t until we were living in the house and I consulted Council’s 

eco design advisor Julie Villard about how we could warm it up that 

we discovered, while we unwittingly thought we had exceeded New 

Zealand standard, we had merely met Code. And that ain’t going to 

cut it in our climate. 

Fortunately Julie had plenty of ideas on how we could improve 

the situation and we have easy access to our underfloor to top-up 

the insulation. Julie Villard, an architect from France, is on a mission 

to transform building best practice here and you can read about the 

groundbreaking ideas she’s applied to her own brand new build on 

page 20. 

I’ve shared the highs and lows of building with the other home 

builders and renovators I interviewed and, like Diane (page 36), would 

relish doing it again. I was struck by how all the home owners said 

what they most valued was the ability of their designer or builder to 

“really listen” to their wants and needs. I was also impressed by how 

much Christchurch people love a good garage! We’ve got some ideas 

for some top of their class cars to complement yours on page 81 and 

how to quickly establish a lawn on page 72. 

We review all the latest trends in everyone’s favourite room – 

the kitchen (page 48), and share an easy yet impressive recipe for 

entertaining friends in your fabulous new home on page 77. 

I hope Peter Beaven would be pleased with how the cool, calm, 

collected one and I realised his dream. Go chase yours people! 

Speaking to the NZ Institute of Architects about ‘bespoke 

architecture’ being a ‘minority pursuit’ not long before his death 

Peter said “I am going to try to prove that it’s possible to build 

modestly and cheaply with a little house for ourselves. It’s going to 

be sustainable and it’s going to be beautiful and it’s going to be just 

cheap – no more than an ordinary spec house. I’ll prove that it can 

be done, and it might be the last thing I prove.”
