Big night for Shakespeare crew • By Sophie Cornish AFTER winning three awards in a national Shakespeare competition, two St Margaret’s College student directors have been selected to take part in the national schools Shakespeare production. The week-long course in Dunedin later this year will give Ruby Anderson and Emily Stewart a chance to be selected in the Young Shakespeare Company, which will travel to the Globe Theatre in London. They will work with other directors to co-create and perform a version of a Shakespeare play. Former St Margaret’s student Adeline Tigerlily Perry was selected in the YSC last year and will be • By Sophie Cornish MODERN fabrication tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters can be found in the newly-opened Green Library and Innovation Centre at St Andrew’s College. Parents Chris and Sarah Green made a “generous” financial donation towards the centre to create a legacy for their son. Designed by Tony Hoare of Wilke & Bruce Architects, the centre features an information space with an extensive mezzanine area for displaying books and studying, as well as two specific innovation spaces. The ‘design’ space will be used to bring together travelling to London next month. A modern take on Shakespeare’s romantic love story As You Like It saw the current batch of students win ‘best communication with the audience’ and ‘best student directed piece’ at the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare regional competition held in Christchurch. The cast and directors advanced through to the national competition in Wellington, where they won three awards. They took out best comedy, best student directed ensemble (for Ruby and Emily) and the most convincing onstage connection, which was won by Ruby and Sophie McClean as Celia and Rosalind. The girls also participated in workshops run by actors and directors, saying the highlights of their trip included a special welcome by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy, exploring Government House and taking in the Wellington theatre culture. For the competition, the students were required to come up with a setting, interpretation and to ‘breathe new life’ into Shakespeare to make it relevant for a modern audience. Along with the two directors and Sophie, the cast included actor Kaitlin Burden and dancers Polly Forbes, Poppy Cox, Annalida Jaegar, Olivia Wilson and Georgina Lange. Head of innovation and information services Wilj Dekkers said the new centre is home to some exciting collaborative projects. “It has created a learning hub where various subject groups can gather together to share ideas and innovate. The students are already coming up with lots of exciting ideas and new ways to use the technology and equipment,” he said. A Hundred Stories of Hope and Healing A one night only event in Christchurch In May 2009, nationally acclaimed interior designer Hayley Brown was diagnosed with breast cancer. She quit her career of 25 years to find some solution that didn’t include chemo, radiation or surgery. Together with her partner, nutritionist and high performance coach Todd Balfour, she travelled the world looking for better ways of dealing with cancer. Journeying through Australia, Bali, Spain and finally landing in the USA. Hayley had Hyperthermia in LA for just 14 weeks and her 5cm tumour disintegrated completely. She was cleared of cancer using a PET scan in July 2010. In May 2013 the cancer came back with a vengeance, chances of survival looked slim. Over the duration of her illness, Hayley lost everything, her health, her home, her career - all her money had been used up in the fight to stay alive. She was now dying and in debt. “I was given a round of chemo to subdue the tumour that had grown out through my skin. I never had any surgery - it was potentially life threatening so I turned it down. I was discharged and the oncologist said that she would ‘manage me forward’ (till I died).” “But I wasn’t thinking about dying, I was thinking about living and wanting to help others…” In 2014, despite apparently having limited time, Hayley and Todd began a new venture called “Health Evolution” on the Kāpiti Coast. “Not knowing how long I was going to be around, I took on a month-to-month lease in a commercial building. That was five years ago. To the amazement of oncology, and the landlord, I am still alive and my cancer is in remission.” So what happened? What changed the game? At Heath Evolution, Hayley and Todd offer Pulsed Electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF) and mild Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT) treatments based on cutting-edge German protocols. Both modalities have far-reaching implications for physical and neurological rehabilitation. PEMF and HBOT work by taking advantage of the welldocumented effects of electromagnetic fields and the power of oxygen combined with pressure on cellular function and metabolism.
