Students urged to choose relevant
and impactful careers in future

MTN GHANA
has ended its
global Career
Day nationwide
by creating a
platform for
young people to see what the future
job market may look like and
empower them with tools and
ideas that would prepare them for
the future.
In all, four Senior High
Schools (SHSs) participated in the
career empowerment programme
in Accra yesterday.
The schools were Osu Salem
SHS, Accra High School,
Ashaiman SHS and Kinbu SHS.
According to the company, the
career day formed part of their efforts
to support the empowerment
of young people in the
markets in which they operate.
Mr Samuel Koranteng, Acting
Corporate Services Executive, said
they were committed to digital innovation
and were aware of the
ways that technological advancements
had influenced traditional
notions of the workplace and created
new opportunities in the digital
economy.
He said “The Y’ello Career
Day marks the end of a successful
three weeks of staff volunteerism
across the MTN footprint, with a
mission to bridge the digital divide
and train the future workforce, future
employers and leaders in the
regions where MTN has a presence.”
“Today offers a unique opportunity
for our participants from
our SHSs to make decisions on
their career path,” he added.
Mr Koranteng pointed out that
this year’s theme ‘Creating a
brighter future’ will help guide
young people to choose careers
that would be relevant and impactful
to society.
“We believe that through the
event, we can equip our participants
with adequate information
on the changing dynamics of
today’s job market. Students will,
therefore, be empowered enough
to choose careers that are relevant,”
he opined.

Cabinet approves proposed takeover of ECG by Meralco
CABINET HAS approved the
proposed takeover of Electricity
Company of Ghana (ECG) by
Meralco Consortium.
This should pave the way for
Parliament to scrutinise documents
covering the planned
takeover.
Chief Executive Officer of
Millennium Development Authority
(MiDA), Benjamin Martin
Esson told Joy Business at the
launch of the Ghana Power Compact
Internship and Mentoring
programme that all the necessary
work had been done for parliament’s
consideration.
“It is gone past Cabinet, we
don’t know the outcome of Parliament
but I know Cabinet had a
good look at it and they were
comfortable with it,” he said.
•Cabinet has approved the takeover of ECG
Mr Esson explained
the processes
involved in the ECG
privatisation: “You
will need an additional
seven months to discuss
a lot of related issues.
The basic
agreements have been
discussed and negotiated
and everybody is
comfortable.
“But it is like having
now been given
keys to a house and
have some work to do
together before you
hand over the keys to
the person who is
going to be the next
tenant,” he said.
Under this compact,
six projects would be implemented
to address the root causes
of the unavailability and unreliability
of power in Ghana which are
ECG Financial and Operational
Turnaround Project, NEDCo Financial
and Operational Turnaround
Project, Regulatory
Strengthening and Capacity Building
Project, and Access Project.
Others include Power Generation
Sector Improvement Project
and Energy Efficiency, and Demand
Side Management Project.
In order to attract more women
into the power sector, MiDA has
launched the first ever Ghana
Power compact internship and
mentorship programme for
women in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics.
