WELCOME with Dave Gregory
Hello
Welcome to this issue of The Garage.
Welcome to this issue of The Garage
Think modern engines (both petrol
and diesel) and generally you’ll
think of them as reliable units that,
on the whole, need not much more
than regular servicing and the occasional
repair.
But is that really the case? Some engines
might be letting the side down when it
comes to reliability. Whether petrol or diesel
there’s every chance some more serious
repairs, from a head gasket to valve work,
might be needed.
Once the answer was to source a complete
replacement engine, but media exposure
showed just how often a replacement engine
was the wrong choice, with duff units being
fitted to customers’ cars. Nowadays it’s
easier to repair the damaged engine rather
than taking a chance on a replacement unit.
For workshops that means potentially
more earning potentially. These jobs tend
to be more time consuming, and they also
require superior skills levels due to an engine’s
greater complexity.
It’s important for garages to have a good
source of replacement parts, but those components
have to be of a high standard too.
Fitting poor-quality, failing components is a
sure-fire of damaging your business’ reputation.
We also step out of the workshop and take
a look at motor sport and how it works with
the aftermarket. Or, as is more likely, how
the aftermarket works with motor sport.
Those of a certain age might still subscribe
to the view that racing improves the breed,
and well into the 1970s there was seen to
be a correlation between motor sport (rallying
was often singled-out) and the cars in
showrooms.
It might be argued that today’s competition
cars are way too detached from what’s
sitting on our driveways, but there’s no denying
that for aftermarket suppliers and
motor manufacturers, being associated
with motor sport is a great way to get the
message across. But is it beneficial and if
so, how? We take a look.
This issue also looks back to the recently-held
Automechanika, the aftermarket’s
shop window to its workshops customers.
Did you go and if so, what did you think?
As always, your comments and observations
are gratefully received.
EGR
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction technique used in petrol/gasoline and
diesel engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine’s exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. This
dilutes the O2 in the incoming air stream and provides gases inert to combustion to act as absorbents of combustion
heat to reduce peak in-cylinder temperatures. NOx is produced in a narrow band of high cylinder temperatures and pressures.
JDEUS has available 129 part numbers that with a total of 1957 vehicle applications with O.E. Quality assuring a perfect functionality.
CHEADLE-BASED FALKEN
TYRE SPECIALIST WELCOMES
VIPS FROM JAPAN
AA SILENCERS, a
multiple award-winning
AA accredited
automotive centre
based on Tean Road
in Cheadle, Staffordshire
headed up by local brothers
Simon, Justin, Adam and
Blake Grocott hosted an official
UK visit from the sixth
largest global tyre manufacturer
Sumitomo Rubber Industries
Ltd (SRI) the parent
company of Falken Tyres.
The family-run business,
employing 14 members of
staff from the local area, has
proactively aimed to deliver
a whole new kind of fast-fit
customer experience coupled
with state of the art, modern
premises using high-tech
equipment and highly-trained
technicians.
A delegation from SRI Ltd
visited their centre as part of
an official UK trip with Micheldever
Tyre Services. The visit
included a tour of their premises,
a staff meet and greet,
with the opportunity to jointly
discuss the impact the Falken
Tyre brand has had upon AA
Silencers business and their
growing customer base. The
Grocott brothers have seen
their tyre sales double since
the partnership with Falken
Tyres earlier this year, along
with an increase in customer
footfall.
Simon Grocott says, “We
have an active mission and
commitment to our customers
to provide the right tyre at the
right price, but also to sell a
range of tyres with credibility,
which meets the needs of our
customers. For us, we wanted
a substantial range of tyres
that were not only extremely
safe, technologically advanced
but also provided the level
of quality our customer’s demand
- Falken have ticked
all those boxes, and we’re
Affordable electric cars listed
ELECTRIC VEHICLES are more popular than
ever with May seeing an 18.7% increase in
the number of new pure electric vehicles
registered, according to the SMMT. For
motorists looking for a used electric vehicle,
vehicle valuation experts at HPI have selected
five of the best electric vehicles to buy under
£10,000.
The entry level Leaf offers a published range
of 124 miles and would interest someone
looking for a practical electric family car.
With a similar range to the Nissan Leaf the
Zoe is seen as an alternative option, you can
pick up a battery leased vehicle much cheaper
however, the 100% owned vehicles hold their
price but tend to be rare.
Chris Plumb, motoring expert at HPI
said: “Drivers are becoming increasingly
comfortable with electric vehicles as the
extremely honoured to have
received a visit of this nature.
This ‘one of a kind’ visit
by Falken’s parent company
SRI LTD is an extraordinary
day for our business and the
team. We have been able to
showcase how well the brand
has been received within our
centre with the support of Micheldever
Tyres Services. The
decision to become a Falken
Tyre dealer was by far a crucial
decision in the growth of
our business.”
AA Silencers is open six
days a week and can be contacted
on 01538 753252 or
visit their website www.aasilencers.com.
technology improves. Second hand models
are becoming more affordable and can offer
cost effective motoring. Our picks provide
value for money and are likely to hold their
value in the years to come.”
The Citroen C Zero, Mitsubishi I-MIEV and
Peugeot ION offer value for money if you are
looking to enter the world of EV’s or looking
for a cheap second car to run. With the
manufacturers stating they can do around 92
miles on a charge they are ideal for driving to
the station or popping to shops. These cars
cost approx between £1.50 to £2.50 to charge,
dependant on your rate, there are some
running cost savings to be had.
Drivers of electric vehicles also benefit from
additional savings that include no road tax, no
congestion charges and some councils even
offer free on street parking.
PAGID CUSTOMERS FIRST ON
THE GRID AT SILVERSTONE
OVER 20 garage and
workshop owners
enjoyed the thrills
and spills of the British
leg of the prestigious
Blancpain GT Series
(Endurance Cup) at Silverstone
recently (20 May 2018),
as guests of Pagid, the UK’s
biggest braking brand.
Pagid Racing is the official
braking partner to the BLACK
FALCON Racing team and the
exclusive motorsport brand
of TMD Performance, part of
the TMD Friction Group.
Three BLACK FALCON
Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars
lined up on the grid against
Ferrari, Lamborghini and
other world-renowned super
cars.
BLACK FALCON claimed
victory in the Silver Cup
class, hot in the tracks of its
success in the same class at
the series-opener in Monza.
Hosted in the BLACK FAL-
CON team’s hospitality facilities,
the group of around 50
guests, including Pagid customers,
their ‘plus ones’ and
representatives from Euro
Car Parts and TMD Friction,
were able to enjoy ‘access all
areas’ privileges, including
the paddock and pit garage,
as well as getting to meet the
drivers.
Phil Woodcock, UK Key
Account Manager for Pagid,
said: “We had a spectacular
day in the sunshine enjoying
top-class motorsport, with
BLACK FALCON winning the
Silver Cup class capping the
day off perfectly.
“Everything Pagid Racing
learns on the track is fed back
to the experts in our research
and development facility at
TMD Friction in Germany,
and influences the braking
technology we bring to market
for the Pagid brand.
“Teaming up with BLACK
FALCON to bring this exciting
opportunity to our customers
was possibly the most successful
Pagid customer event
to date and we will certainly
look to do something like this
again soon.”
The thrilling yet unpredictable
Endurance Cup features
strict performance specifications
to keep the field as close
as possible and is an intense
set of races focusing on driver
skill and engineering set-up.
Used car prices stable
AVERAGE USED car prices in the UK dropped slightly in May
with diesel recording a steeper decline than petrol, according
to Auto Trader’s latest Retail Price Index. The average price
of a used car in May was £12,676, a £93 decrease compared
to April but a 7% increase on the same period last year on a
like-for-like basis (stripping out the impact of changes in the
mix of cars being sold).
One of Pagid’s guests, Darren
Vance, from LTM Motors
in Rotherham, said: “Having
never been to Silverstone before,
it was a real privilege to
be invited to this event with
Pagid, which gave us behind
the scenes access at the home
of British motorsport. Meeting
the drivers and their crews
and asking questions about
their strategies and technical
set-up gave us a real insight
into the level of skill and expertise
required to drive in
this fast and furious event. It
was a thoroughly enjoyable
and unforgettable day.”
The Blancpain GT Series
runs over 10 events with
five Endurance Cup and five
Sprint Cup races.
EURO CAR Parts will continue to stock EGR valves and
coolers for VAG Group 1.6 2l diesel vehicles, long after they
have been discontinued to the aftermarket.
Original manufacturers of the parts recently announced
plans to cease supplying the aftermarket, choosing
instead, to focus distribution only at Original Equipment
(OE), or dealership level. For independent repairers, this
means replacements can only be sourced directly from the
manufacturer, at a considerably higher cost than aftermarket
alternatives.
Despite this move, Euro Car Parts has announced that
it not only holds stock currently but is expecting further
deliveries of these parts after agreeing a deal to continue
supplying the independent aftermarket. This makes the
NEWS 10
NEW DEVICE FOR
ENGINE CLEANING
IT IS a fundamental problem
of combustion engines:
Exhaust emissions
and fuel residues dirty the
fuel and intake system.
Performance levels drop, fuel
consumption rises and the
exhaust gas values become
worse. With the JetClean
Tronic II by German additive
specialist LIQUI MOLY garages
can give the engine and
fuel system a thorough cleaning.
“The engine can breathe
freely again and the garage attains
additional sales with the
service,” says David Kaiser,
Research and Development
Manager at LIQUI MOLY.
As soon as an engine is running,
combustion residues
are created that get stuck on
the injection nozzles. This
means the fuel is no longer
as finely atomized. A loss of
performance, increased fuel
consumption and even more
combustion residues are the
consequences. The intake
system also suffers. The dirt
ends up here, on the one
hand, through the exhaust
gas recirculation and, on the
other, through the crankcase
ventilation. These deposits
pose such a problem because
modern engines react much
more sensitively to dirt than
older ones. This can even
lead to engine failure.
These deposits are particularly
quickly and thoroughly
removed with the JetClean
Tronic II. Once connected to
the injection or intake system,
the device pumps in the
cleaning additive developed
in-house. “This allows a concentrated
and effective removal
of the deposits,” says
David Kaiser. There are four
additives for the JetClean
Tronic II: One each for the injection
and intake system and
one each for the gasoline and
diesel engine fuel systems.
In order to prevent mix-ups
the gasoline additives are colored
blue. This means just
a glance at the two tanks of
the JetClean Tronic II is all
it takes to recognize whether
the remaining amount has to
be removed before the next
use or simply topped up.
The cleaning process itself
is monitored by the device.
The mechanic can take care
of other jobs in the meantime
and yet the safety that nothing
will go wrong and that the
fuel system will not have to
be laboriously ventilated afterwards
is still ensured. The
only other way to attain the
same result would be to remove
the components and to
clean them by hand – a much
more inconvenient and laborious
undertaking.
The JetClean Tronic II is
attached to the
car battery. Because
no external
power
supply is required,
the
device can be
portably used,
for example, to
treat an entire
fleet at the customer’s
premises. It
is suitable not only for cars,
but also for commercial vehicles,
construction machines,
motorcycles and boats. After
cleaning the engine again offers
its original performance,
the service life of the injection
system is extended and the
In its domestic market of
SEE SENSE: INTRODUCING ELTA
VISIONPRO AND VXPRO
ELTA Automotive Ltd marked its 25th
anniversary by launching its new PRO brands
at Automechanika Birmingham in June.
THE DUAL introduction, which encompasses
the VISIONPRO – vision related – and VXPRO
– electrical sense and control focused – brands
was made as a direct response to the changing
face of the aftermarket and the brands
are positioned to provide the solution for the needs of the
independent who is having to adapt and evolve to compete
in this developing landscape. The VISIONPRO and VXPRO
ranges arm workshops with the weapons they need to provide
a viable option for the demands of their customers.
The combined offering is one of premium quality and set
at a price point more reflective of current market conditions,
but which also meets the independent’s need for a
broad range of products under a single, consistent brand
image, sourced from a single supplier with a pedigree able
to underpin its future growth.
The two product groups naturally reflect the core specialisms
developed by ELTA Automotive during its first 25
years, adding further credibility and instilling confidence to
the market.
NEWS 12
CORRECT OILS COULD BE KEY TO
PASSING NEW MOT, SAYS COMMA
THE KEY to diesel
vehicles passing the
new MOT service
may be as simple as
using the correct low
SAPS oil on diesel cars, according
to lubricants expert
Comma Oil.
Taking extra care in using
the correct low SAPS oil
may reap the rewards for garages
across the UK, easing
diesel-powered cars through
the new MOT and protecting
customers from penalties.
Introduced on the 20 May,
the new MOT has made substantial
changes to the service,
tightening the rules for
diesel cars in particular.
Chief among those is a
hefty £1,000 fine for owners
found with a tampered
or clogged Diesel Particulate
Filter (DPF), a device which
removes soot from exhaust
gas to dramatically lower
diesel emissions - when kept
in good condition.
Yet most models require
specific grades of low SAPS
oil, meaning garages need to
take extra care when servicing
diesel cars during their
MOTs.
Using high quality low
SAPS oil can optimise diesel
engine performance by
lowering emissions and prolonging
the lifetime of DPFs.
This keeps diesel engines
running efficiently for longer
whilst avoiding costly MOT
penalties and replacements.
Mike Bewsey, Sales and
Marketing Director at Comma,
commented: “When it
comes to the diesel engine,
the smallest change can often
have a big impact. Something
as simple as using the
right low SAPS oil and opting
for a higher-grade version
can mean the difference
between an MOT pass or fail.
But beyond this, it can also
mean the difference between
a good level of service, and a
bad one.
“The new MOT is putting
diesel engines under more
scrutiny than ever, and garages
have a real opportunity
to help keep the millions
of diesel drivers on the road
- reaping the rewards in doing
so.”
Tim is Schaeffler’s INA & FAG product specialist. Basically, that means Tim knows everything
there is to know about bearings. From the bearings you find in INA tensioners, idlers and
water pumps - to good old fashioned (and some extremely high-tech) wheel bearings.
Tim also knows the best way to fit them, helping to avoid potential premature failures and
keeping you and your customers happy. He shares that know-how during regular training
FUCHS
MARCHING ON
WITH HUGE NEW
INVESTMENT
FUCHS LUBRICANTS
UK will house a new
raw materials warehouse
and benefit
from a range of innovative
manufacturing plant
machinery as part of a cash
injection of more than £10
million.
The investment comes less
than a year after new state-ofthe-art
offices were built at the
FUCHS UK headquarters in
Stoke-on-Trent and coincides
with ongoing enhancements
to the R&D Technical Centre
which further strengthen the
company’s market position in
the UK.
Richard Halhead, managing
director of FUCHS Lubricants
UK, said: “This is
a hugely significant project
which will have fantastic benefits
for the business.
“It will elevate FUCHS Lubricants
to a unique position
as the only lubricant manufacturer
in the UK with this
type of facility, firmly placing
us at the forefront in the R&D,
manufacture and distribution
of lubricants in the UK and
maintains our pledge to continually
build for the future.
“It all means we are perfectly
placed to fulfil the future
lubricant production needs
of all our customers across a
vast range of sectors.”
The construction of a new
warehouse, holding 4,000
pallet locations, will allow
FUCHS to significantly increase
its capacity for raw
materials, while allowing an
existing building to become
a specialist packaging warehouse.
Enhancements to the production
process include the
introduction of a FANUC
M410/185iC four axis robot
arm, which has the capacity
to simultaneously palletise
boxes from three independent
filling lines, packing into
15 different box configurations.
Further improvements in
efficiency will be seen through
the introduction of a FEIGE
automatic filling machine.
Capable of filling 60L, 205L
and IBC containers, the machine’s
A.I determines the
pack size to be filled and the
automatic spout then fills to a
required volume.
Building on the success
and demand for the 20 litre
Lube Cube, FUCHS’ innovative
recyclable packaging solution,
the original Lube Cube
machine introduced several
years ago, sees the planned
introduction of a second automatic
Lube Cube filling
machine to support the increasing
demand for the ecofriendly
alternative to plastic.
The 20 litre Lube Cube success
has been strengthened
by the introduction of four
litre Lube Cube and the latest
five litre which will be
launched mid-year.
Modula storage machines
have been have been installed
to assist with retained oil
samples and to aid with product
label stock levels using an
automatic re-ordering notification
system.
FUCHS UK have installed
a bank of roof mounted solar
panels, generating 14 per
cent of electricity demand,
implemented a state-of-theart
computerised maintenance
management system,
added energy efficient LED
lighting across the plant and
purchased a number of Linx
8940 batch printers to their
production lines.
Logistical capability has
also been enhanced with the
investment in five new truck
cabs and numerous technical
support vehicles.
The investments are not
only for the Hanley manufacturing
plant, understanding
the need to service a dedicated
agricultural area in the
UK, FUCHS has advanced
and expanded its depot at
Dereham in East Anglia.
The global group’s investment
in the UK does not
stop here with various other
projects scheduled during
2018 including a second robot
arm, driverless forklifts
and numerous automation
upgrades to our production
lines.
Richard added: “Our ambitious
aim is to produce
the most modern lubricants
blending plant in the UK and
we feel this significant expenditure
in our infrastructure
will put us well on the road to
achieving that.”
REPXPERT shares
three new INA
technical bulletins
The REPXPERT technical team
has been busy this month,
preparing some new and
useful service information
about the latest design
changes and product updates
from Schaeffler.
All three releases concern
INA components, the first
relating to an improved
coolant pump design that
affects many Fiat Group
and General Motors diesel
applications. The addition of
a heavy duty external bearing,
to replace the former standard
version, is designed to cope
better with temperature
fluctuations, load changes and
vibration levels in the timing
belt system – extending the
service life of the pump.
Similar design – but different
characteristics
The next bulletin focuses on
tensioner pulley and vibration
damper combinations. Whilst
some part pairings may
appear to match correctly,
INA engineers are advising
technicians to carefully check
the specified tensioner pulley
and vibration to ensure they
are going to install the correct
pairing.
Tensioner pulley and
vibration dampers are
engineered to work
together, so only the correct
combination will guarantee the
smoothest possible engine
timing. A mix of parts could
cause increased wear or even
failure of individual timing
system components. It is best
practice is to always follow
accurate vehicle manufacturer
(VM) recommended
installation instructions and
specifications, which are
available to download for free
on REPXPERT.
Removal tip
The final bulletin concerns
the inclusion of a diamondencrusted
washer in some
INA Timing Belt KITs to
suit a variety of Audi, Volvo
and Volkswagen 2.5TDi
applications.
VM installation instructions
include the removal of
the crankshaft vibration
damper during a belt system
service. VAG and Volvo
both recommend that the
crankshaft bolt – and its
diamond-encrusted washer
– should be replaced during
this procedure, so INA now
includes these components
in all applicable KITs. The
special coating on the washer,
combined with the new
crankshaft bolt, eliminates
the chances of the vibration
damper becoming loose
during operation.
REPXPERT training and
bulletins
These three bulletins, along
with service information
sheets for all Schaeffler
brands – LuK, FAG and Ruville
– are available to view and
BM Catalysts praises
new government advice
on catalytic converters
BM Catalysts has
welcomed the Department
for Transport
(DFT) decision
to reiterate the strict
requirements for selling catalytic
converters and Diesel
Particulate Filters (DPFs)
into the UK.
The firm believes it will
help reduce the number of
non-compliant products being
sold and subsequently
fitted in the UK market.
Additionally, a new update
to leading aftermarket software
solution service MAM,
used by the majority of distributors
to purchase and
sell aftermarket products, is
expected to land in the summer.
V9 will map the Euro
level that a supplier’s part is
approved for sale on against
a vehicle registration number.
The change means that
it will be harder to supply a
part which does not meet the
Euro level requirements of
the vehicle being looked up.
The DFT also advises that
DPFs cannot be sold for Euro
5 vehicles without the required
homologation to meet
European standards.
BM Catalysts managing director
Toby Massey said the
new advice brings further
clarity to the aftermarket:
“It’s important that all parties,
particularly distributors,
ensure that the correct
parts are supplied for
the right vehicles, including
meeting the correct Euro
emissions standards.
“Along with this new advice
from the DFT, we expect that
identifying the right parts
for distributors will become
easier once V9 of MAM is
released. Once this is in
place, we’ll start to see the
correct catalytic converters
and DPFs available, matched
against the correct vehicles
for the first time.”
The DFT have also made
the market aware that manufacturers,
suppliers and
distributors have a responsibility
to ensure the correct
parts are supplied based on
the law, and that enforcement
action can be taken if they
don’t. Massey continues, “It’s
the responsibility of all of us
to make this work.”
BM Catalysts is the largest
independent manufacturer of
high-quality aftermarket catalytic
converters, DPFs and
front pipes in Europe. For
EDT Automotive signs nine garages to
network during Automechanika debut
EDT Automotive, the
multi-award winning
engine decontamination
specialist, has
enjoyed a phenomenally
successful debut show
at this year’s Automechanika
Birmingham, signing nine garages
live on the stand as well
as co-sponsoring the event’s
Garage of the Year awards.
As the UK’s leading automotive
aftermarket exhibition,
Automechanika presented
the EDT team with a
unique opportunity to talk to
garage owners from locations
all over Britain during the
course of the three-day show.
Demonstrations of both the
engine decontamination and
auto transmission machines
led to garages in areas such as
Stockton-on-Tees, Grimsby,
Hull, Basingstoke, Gosport
and Norfolk all benefitting
from an exclusive show offer
of free installation (worth
£895 + VAT) by signing up
to join the network, covering
some of the company’s open
points.
Commenting on EDT’s
success at the show, CEO
David Holmes said: “The independent
garage sector of
Automechanika’s attendees is
growing year-on-year, and the
garage owners who came to
our stand gave us a great deal
CEO of EDT, David Holmes
of positive feedback about the
event: they clearly believe that
it will keep getting better.
“As a result, we’ve committed
to attend the 2019 show,
and we envisage that it will be
even more successful for us,
be larger in scale.
A stunt driver whose film credits include a number
of James Bond movies has revealed how his ultimate
career highlight was winning his first ever British Rally
Championship.
Mark Higgins, 46, has travelled around the world filming
action-packed scenes for films such as Skyfall and Quantum
of Solace.
During the course of his career, dad-of-two Mark, who is
originally from the Isle of Man, has driven an Aston Martin
sideways at 95 mph through the Vatican, doubled as James
Bond and appeared on Top Gear.
He won the British Rally Championship three times in
1997, 2005 and 2006 and credits the Prestone MSA British
Rally Championship which travels to Ypres, Belgium on 22-
23 June, for helping him realise his dreams of becoming a
professional driver.
Mark said: “I am originally from the Isle of Man where
there is a lot of rally heritage. My grandparents rallied, my
uncles did and my parents did. My nanna and grandad were
actually a team back in the sixties and my mum and dad
“Let’s face it, the chance to
talk to garages from locations
such as Scotland and Ireland
in once place is too good to
miss!”
In addition to a successful
show, EDT Automotive
was also proud to sponsor
the ‘Technology Innovation’
award at the prestigious Garage
of the Year dinner, which
took place at Villa Park on
Tuesday evening.
Sales Manager, Sean Welch
and newly-appointed Regional
Director for the North, Ian
Stubbs presented BeeCool
ACS in Kettering with the
coveted prize for demonstrat-
ing numerous examples of
innovation in the field of airconditioning.
David added: “It was a real
honour to present such a worthy
winner with their award.
“Independent garages often
aren’t given the credit they deserve
for the extensive knowledge
that they need to accrue
across such a wide range of
manufacturers and models.
“This was a great opportunity
to shine a spotlight on
some aftermarket excellence.”
Stunt driver to British Champion
rallied together.
“There were a couple of rallies a year, it was a big thing
when rallies came to the Isle of Man. When I was asked at
four years old what I wanted to be I always said I wanted to
be a rally driver.
“The Isle of Man is very much a motorsporting place and
when the British Rally Championship came to the Isle of
Man it was a very big event back in the day. All the world
championship guys used to come over as well. I’m excited to
see the Championship back on home soil this September.
“The British Rally Championship is a great way for any
young driver to get involved in rallying. It’s the premier
championship in the UK and gives you all the skills you need
to move on to the world championships. It’s a really good
stepping stone and they have some fantastic events.”
Mark admits he has been lucky to turn his love for driving
into a career, and says that despite his film credentials, his
ultimate career highlight was winning his first British Rally
Championship in 1997. The rally saw Mark win a closesfought
title race in a Nissan Sunny.
MOTORSPORT
LE MANS
A DIFFERENT
PERSPECTIVE
OF LE MANS
It’s been quite a month for the Garage team.
Three major events, culminating in an
invitation from Gulf Oil to the iconic Le
Mans 24 hour Endurance Race – quite
a challenge for a mere motoring
journo writes Stuart Woolley.
GULF RACING is a privately
owned team
competing in the
World Endurance
Championship and
the Le Mans 24hr running a
Porsche 911 RSR within the
LM GTE AM Category.
The team operates with a
three driver line up which includes
a professional driver
and an amateur driver within
the ranks.
The Garage was given exclusive
garage access on the
day of the race, where we were
able to observe the team going
through final preparation for
this unique endurance race.
The pit environment was
quite tight, manoeuvrability
was tough with space at a premium,
so everything has to be
done with precision timing.
We were not privy to the intricacies
of the vehicle due to the
sensitive nature of the equipment
but we were able to look
around and understand a little
about the make-up.
The cockpit is quite snug
and houses a steering wheel
which alone
is worth a
staggering £30k.
The car itself was has
been designed with long dis-
tance racing in mind. The
aerodynamics of the vehicle
have been optimised to create
less drag and enhanced
downforce distribution, allowing
the car to achieve a
more precise steering behaviour.
While present in the garage,
we were lucky enough
to witness a practice driver
change procedure. This was
done with a single mechanic
whose role is to help the incumbent
driver out and help
secure the new driver in. All
three drivers took part in
the session, as over the 24hr
period, any delay no matter
how minute could be costly
in the overall timings.
We moved from the pit lane
to the grid, which can only
be described as chaos. There
were people everywhere and
yet, amongst all of this, the
teams and drivers remained
relaxed and focused on the
task ahead. You are able to
get up close and personal to
the teams and the cars while
the teams are always on hand
for photo opportunities and
to chat about the race.
Gulf Racing Team Manager,
Owen Daley kindly took some
time to talk me through the
procedure from the grid.
They start by warming up
the engine for around 15
minutes. The car will have no
wheels attached as Le Mans
does not allow tyre warmers.
All crew members and the
drivers will then line up in
front of the car for the National
Anthem. At around
2.40pm they will bring the
tyres down and fit them to the
car. They are shown the five
minute board to advise the
teams that the grid must be
emptied by around 2.50pm,
they will then start the car
ready for the race.
Owen explained that during
the course of the event, he
encourages team members to
have power naps where possible,
but it is of course difficult
to police as the adrenaline
is pumping and at any
point in time, a radio call
might come in advising of
damage or a puncture.
It’s hard to imagine just
how much work, preparation
and dedication goes into to
preparing for such an event.
The team is constantly on
edge waiting and wondering
with hope of completing the
most difficult and challenging
motor race in the world.
The Gulf Racing Team
achieved a category place of
10th and an overall finish of
42nd finishing with fastest
GTE Lap for their category.
The future
looks bright
for callum
Most of us who
work in the
automotive industry
started
with the dream
of being a race car driver, the
roar of the engine, the adrenaline
rush of driving at high
speeds and the thrill of the
grid are a childhood dream
for most. Without a family
background in motorsport,
it is a tough world to break
into. It takes a passion and
determination to succeed.
But for one British teenager
the dream is fast becoming
reality.
After a chance drive in a
kart at just seven years old,
Callum Ilott was hooked.
Now at 19, he is one of Britain’s
brightest talents in motorsport,
with three seasons
of racing already under his
belt.
“Motorsport is perceived
as an inaccessible sport and
it’s not obvious how you get
started,” says Ilott. “It’s not
like football is it where there
is a local club in nearly every
town. You can head down to
the pitch and start kicking
a ball. For motorsport you
need special kit, a car or kart
and somewhere to drive it.”
“We had no idea of how you
got started racing a kart, so
we just turned up and asked
for a go,” adds Ilott. “As soon
as I drove one, I was genuinely
hooked. I loved the feeling
and of course, the speed.”
A rapid rise through karting
culminated in the prestigious
European KF title
and attracted the attention
of Red Bull Racing. Ilott was
signed up, making the switch
to car racing before he’d finished
his GCSEs. “I was 16
when I moved into F3. That
was a bigger leap than many
karters make as most would
do F4 first, so I had to learn
fast!” By the end of the year,
Ilott had recorded a podium
finish and finished an admirable
12th out of a field of 34
but 2016 saw Callum leave
the Red Bull programme and
join Dutch team VAR. A win
first-time out demonstrated
Ilott’s ability and after another
win later in the year, he
moved to Prema Powerteam
for 2017. Ilott was rapid, securing
11 poles, six wins and
topped the year by winning
the qualification race at the
Macau Grand Prix.
Ilott’s talented and spirited
drives caught the eye of the
Ferrari Driver Academy and
Ilott was signed to the squad
for 2018. “The FDA (Ferrari
Driver Academy) was created
to provide drivers with support
in all the areas that they
need today,” says Ilott. “That
includes physical, mental,
engineering, media training,
sim time and even Italian language
lessons. It all comes in
a mix of theory and practical
based in Maranello. It really
looks at every aspect of being
a driver.”
Alongside this Ilott will
compete for French team
ART in GP3, a championship
that is on the support bill for
F1. “It’s a fresh challenge and
I’m loving it,” says Ilott. The
year has started strongly. In
his first-ever GP3 race, Ilott
made the podium and Ilott is
gunning for the title.
Looking to the future, Ilott’s
got his sights firmly set
on progressing his single
seater career. “If I do well
this year, I’ll look at F2 and
I’ll take each step at a time.
Moving up the ladder is what
I’ve been working for since
that first trip to Rye House.
On and off track, with the
support of the FDA, I’m doing
everything I can to succeed
this year.”
Having made a successful
start to his career, what advice
would Callum offer to
prospective racers? “There
are loads of karting tracks
around the country so it’s
worth having a trial before
committing to buying a kart
and the associated kit. Don’t
worry if you are not from a
racing family either; as a
family, we had no experience
and learnt as we went
along. I always say that you
have to enjoy the racing too;
That’s because there are
hard times as well as the
days when it all goes to plan.
You have to love all aspects
of racing.
With such drive and determination
we are sure to be
seeing more of Callum lining
up on the grids in the future.
Driving to the Max on
the British Touring
It’s been a whirlwind
few weeks for The Garage
magazine, direct from the
TT experience, we were
privileged to meet up with
Josh Cook, British Touring
Car driver for Team Power
Maxed Tag Racing at Oulton
Park for rounds 10, 11 and
12 of the Championship.
We were given first hand
insight into free practice one
where Josh was looking at set
up and tyre degradation as he
was nursing a 66kg ballast
due to his success in the previous
rounds.
After free practice was over,
I met with Josh in the teams’
hospitality area where I started
by asking him how he became
involved in racing.
The 27 year old debuted
in the BTCC (British Touring
Car Championship) at
the Indy circuit Brands Hatch
in 2015. To date, Josh has
amassed 100 races, winning
two with six podiums. He has
two fastest laps to his name
and one pole position, scoring
450 points in the process.
Previously before joining
the BTCC, he raced in 2012
Clio Cup taking two victories
on his way to finishing fifth
overall and winning the Rookie
Cup.
Josh is a very talented racing
driver, but was very candid
when he explained that he
doubted his ability in his early
career. He started karting at
the age of seven when he was
invited to a party. From that
day forward, he hounded his
dad until he took him again.
He moved from karts to car
racing with a Citroen Saxo
(BRAC SAX MAX Championship)
and finally onto the
stock hatch category which
he won in 2010. It was then
that he managed to attract
some small sponsorship and
further his understanding of
the business side of the industry.
Yes, driving is the focus,
but the knowledge of how
the business operates and the
need to forge partnerships
was imperative in helping him
grow within the sport.
Josh is always looking to
Car circuit
The shell of the vehicle is
a production shell. It comes
straight off the production
line where it is then fitted with
a roll cage and the mounting
points for the front and rear
sub frame which is a standard
across the grid. The
body work is modified with
fibre glass areas and wider
body kits. The doors, tail gate
and rear bumper are stock
from the road car. The engine,
drivetrain, brakes etc are all
specified under the championship
rules.
27 FOCUS Motorsport
Fully committed to working with Josh Cook
“WE’RE REALLY pleased to have him as an ambassador for
Euro Repar Car Service,” said Colin Start from Euro Repar.
“He’s such a humble guy and drives like an absolute rocket.
He’s full of talent and I honestly believe he hasn’t tapped in to
half of that latent talent yet. Every race he just seems to get
quicker and better. How he spots the opportunities to overtake
I do not know!
“He’s had a bit of back luck as you will have seen, but we
believe he’s capable of getting great results. Particularly on
how much he climbed up the grid on race three. Incredible
driving and we’re proud to be partnered with him.
“As far as how we met, as you know PSA (Euro Repar
parent company) have heritage with all things motorsport,
and we appeared in Touring Cars some years ago when I
was still young. As you’d expect, our building is full of car
fanatics and Josh has been on our radar for some time.
BTCC seemed also the perfect sport for us to be a part of
again, especially when you consider our sister brands
are involved in the other important championships;
Citroen in WRC, Peugeot in WRX and DS Automobiles
in Formula E.
“As far as our future is concerned, we’re definitely
committed to a partnership with Josh. We’ve not
finalised anything for 2019 yet, as it’s still early in the season
but he’s a great ambassador and a great driver. A winning
combination. I’m not a BTCC fanatic (but I am becoming
one thanks to Josh), but essentially there are four parts to
Touring Cars; the car, the team, the support crew and the
driver. Fortunately the team are using Vauxhall Astra’s which
is a great start, and Vauxhall have a great partnership with
Power Maxed. And now Vauxhall, part of the PSA family, it
makes perfect sense. The team’s support crew including their
mechanics and technicians work tirelessly to make it a success
– working through the night if needs be to get the job done.
You can’t ask for more dedication than that.
“And that brings me to the driver. And we believe this is the
most important ingredient. You’ll note in motorsport, people
tend to follow people and we know from his publicity Josh is
liked by everyone – BTCC, Dunlop, ITV, the fans and of course
us. You only have to see the fun video Josh did over the
weekend which evidences this – Dunlop actually let him loose
with their equipment to do interviews on their behalf. How
many drivers does that happen with? I think Josh is a young
man with a bright future in motorsport, and both myself and
Euro Repar Car Service are excited at the prospect of working
with him.”
MORGAN EXTINGUISHES
OULTON PARK DEMONS
ADAM MORGAN
added to his points
tally in the Dunlop
MSA British Touring
Car Championship
at Oulton Park, Cheshire,
recently highlighted by a stirring
drive in the final race.
Adam’s Mac Tools with Ciceley
Motorsport Mercedes-
Benz A-Class headed to the
Cheshire circuit laden with
75 kilos of success ballast
as the championship leader,
and that was always going to
hurt Adam on the hilly circuit.
With plenty of inclines
and the stop-start Island
Bend hairpin, Adam inevitably
struggled with the weight
in qualifying but was running
a different Oulton Park set-up
which definitely helped. “The
car feels good,” said The Morganator
after the 30-minute
qualifying session. “The balance
is there and you can feel
the car working well, but it is
the weight that has hurt us. I
was aiming for the top 15 so
19this a bit frustrating, but at
least if we can lose the weight
in race one, we will be set up
for the day.”
Adam suffered the problems
of the narrow Oulton
Park track in the opener, as
he found it very hard to overtake
without risking damage,
allied to the very hot temperatures
that meant that he
had to drop back from the
car ahead on occasions to let
the engine cool down. Adam
eventually netted 18th place,
out of the points, but losing
all the success ballast for race
two.
From 17th on the grid for
race two, Adam battled up to
11th place, helped by some
opportunistic moves gaining
places whenever he could.
“That was a hard race because
it really is narrow here
and you don’t want to be taking
risks all the time. I was
able to gain places and was
third quickest without the
weight, so that is positive.
Eleventh isn’t ideal, but it is
points and we will fight on in
the final race.”
Adam started the reverse
grid third race from 11th on
the grid but a huge start-line
crash led to a stoppage and a
shortened restart. Adam was
in determined mood and battled
his way up to fifth, passing
Tom Chilton’s Ford Focus
with a bold pass and keeping
title rival Tom Ingram (Toyota
Avensis) at bay. “To go from
11th to fifth on a track where
it is hard to overtake is really
good, so I am very pleased
with that. We changed the rear
of the car for race three and it
worked very well, so Oulton is
certainly no longer our bogey
track. I’m second equal in the
championship now, but because
there are two of us tied
on points, we carry the weight
for the lower place, so I will
have 57 kilos for Croft not 66.
That will help as well and we
need to keep banking points.
We are not at halfway yet in
the championship so we will
all work forward to scoring
each time out.”
Ciceley Motorsport’s Tom
Oliphant endured another
difficult weekend, Tom qualified
a fantastic 10th in race
one on the tight and twisty
undulating Oulton Park.
Tom held his position until
the last corner of the last
lap when contact with Brett
Smith pushed him wide and
on to the grass, some brilliant
driving allowed Tom to divert
disaster and bring his Ciceley
Commercials backed car
home in 20th position. Race
two saw Tom make up seven
positions and finish in a creditable
13th. Tom was ready
for race three and looking
forward to breaking into the
top ten when he was collected
in a huge start line incident
and his Phillips Mercedes-
Benz A-Class was damaged
too badly to take part in the
re-start.
Adam now lies second
equal in both the Dunlop
MSA British Touring Car
Championship and the Independents’
Trophy.
minute variances in handling,
To understand this better,
we had the opportunity to be
driven around the course with
Mats Nilssan. Mats happily
drove us in his Mercedes Brabus
roughly (in parts) 160 plus
The Isle of Man TT
up close and personal.
In 1904 Sir Julian Orde
towards racing on public
roads.
His intuition served him
well, as The Highways (Light
Locomotive) Act 1904 gave
permission in the Isle of Man
for a 52.15 mile “Highlands”
course for the Gordon Bennett
Car Trial, the British trial
for the fledgling European
car racing championships.
Today it’s the TT that attracts
petrol heads to the island,
all aspiring to ride the
famous course that tantalises
any fanatic of the motorised
two wheels.
In this supplement, we take
a look behind the scenes and
try to offer an insight into the
mind of a TT racer and this
great event.
When you arrive on the Island
for TT week, the first
thing that greets you is the
sheer mass of motorbikes.
Everywhere you look there
are groups of riders weaving
in and out of the traffic,
on some occasions virtually
rubbing shoulders with the
passing cars on the narrow
streets. But what an atmosphere!
The residents who all
year round are blessed with a
Gulf BMW
TT Brief
The Gulf BMW team were
delighted with this year’s
results at the Isle of Man
TT. They arrived at the
event with the hopes
of top 6 finishes, but in
fact ended up with the
following:
Superbike Race 4th
Superstock Race 4th
Senior TT – retired
more sedate life either take a
holiday or embrace the madness.
The Garage had the privilege
of being able to delve
into the heart of the event
with Gulf BMW and the team.
Headed up by owner Shaun
Muir and the bike piloted by
David (Davo) Johnson, we
had an all-area access pass
to watch and understand the
workings of a race team preparing
for the Super Stock
race.
A Super Stock bike is
based on the bike you can
buy from your dealer. The engine
is almost identical to its
road-going cousin with a few
minor differences. You can
use thinner gaskets to boost
the compression ratio slightly,
and you can retime your
camshafts to jostle the power
band around a bit for better
mid-range poke and acceleration.
Other than that, the
configuration is as provided
by the manufacturer.
The garage environment (although
mobile) is similar to
the environment that all mechanics
are used to. Standard
tools are used to assemble
and disassemble the machine
before and after the race.
Needless to say the mechanics
are highly skilled and
dedicated to creating the fastest
possible bike. Constant
dialogue is employed by mechanics
and rider, discussing
“
We set off with expectations of being in the
top 6. It was the first time at the Isle of Man
for the Gulf BMW team, that’s two races down
and two top 4 finishes achieved, delighted for
a great team effort, especially Davo.
”
Shaun Muir team principal of Gulf BMW
“
The track was good, we had a steady
start as the bike didn’t feel very good.
We probably made a wrong choice of
tyre, but it was still ok, once I got into it,
I started picking them off and got to p4
then it was me and Hilly (James Hillier)
on the Kawasaki pretty much neck and
neck, the last lap I just put my head
down and got the my fastest
lap of the race
sive. Mats gave us a bird’s eye
view and an expert’s mind of
exactly what it takes to ride
the Isle of Man TT.
To even begin to explain
how brave these riders are is
pretty much impossible, but
I will share with you some of
the thoughts that he presented
to us as we drove around
the circuit.
We started sedately as the
route is a street course and
is only closed for the racing,
so the roads were open as
normal. Straight off, Mats
explained the various lines
that the riders will take, and
what speeds they take at every
check point. He explained
that the lighter and gentler the
rider is the easier it is to handle
and manipulate around
the tight bends.
It was fascinating to hear
him talk about positioning
of the front wheel at certain
parts of the track and
in some areas, if you didn’t
ride between the S&L of the
word Slow, it would put you
off line and potentially crash.
He also explained the need to
wheelie the bike sometimes,
as this will help stabilise and
enable the rider to keep control.
At this point, I believe
I looked flabbergasted, as I
always thought it was rider
bravado.
Some crucial parts he did
explain took some understanding.
There are parts of
the track, particularly on the
straights where riders will
be resting and on some occasions
down the straights,
Mats actually closed his eyes
and rested his head on the
fuel tank! You have to take
this in context, this year’s
TT, Peter Hickman’s average
speed on a Superstock bike
was 135.452mph, and the
only word I could utter was
“incredible”
The drive around the course
was phenomenal, the speedo
hitting 160mph at one stage
on the mountain stage. Mats
demonstrated all his skill and
control at such high speeds
and you can only admire the
steely-eyed gladiators that
take on this infamous course
and realise it takes a special
person to be able to do so.
On a final note, I asked Mats
what he feared most about
the race, he told me that he
didn’t fear the race and that if
the worst happened, he would
never know. A sobering insight
as to what mind-set it takes to
take the start line.
We all know how dangerous a
sport motorcycle racing is and
in particular the TT course and
this year was no different. This
year the sport lost Dan Kneen
and Adam Lyon, both extremely
brave men who just loved to
ride. The Garage’s thoughts
are with their families.
Its going to be a busy
year for Rebecca Jackson.
The definition of
multi-tasker, Jackson is
a British race car driver,
TV presenter, motoring journalist,
brand ambassador,
fitness guru, world record
holder, multiple trophy winner
and former used car sales
business owner.
As far as racing goes, Jackson
has already lined up
places in the new Porsche
991 2018 Cup Car, leading
up to Project Monaco. The
Porsche will be the same car
as appearing in the Carrera
Cup which Jackson will do a
whole season in 2019, until
then, she will race the Cup
Car in a few races this year
with her team, Welch Motorsport.
As well as the 991,
Jackson is also signed up
for a whole season in modern
version of the classic VW
Beatle, Herbie this year.
Alongside these, Jackson
is also taking part in a full
season in EGT, a brand new
electric GT Championship,
which looks set to kick off in
November in Jerez and will
feature a field of race-prepared
Tesla Model S P100Ds.
EGT was expected to start
in 2017, however delays
Jack of all trades
pushed the start date back
to later this year. It has since
gained FIA certification, after
passing stringent crash tests
in January, and announced a
provisional calendar for season
one, appearing at world
famous circuits such as Paul
Ricard, Silverstone and Nürburgring.
Electric GT confirmed the
full specifications of Tesla’s
electric racing model, 20 of
which have been built for
the opening season. The
battery-powered saloon
has been renamed Model
S P100DL and produces
778bhp and 734lb ft of
torque. 0-66mph takes
just 2.1 seconds – 0.3
seconds faster than its
road going counterpart
– and a top speed of
155mph. No weight figure
has been announced,
but insiders suggest that
around 525kg has been
removed from the car,
bringing total weight
down to approximately
1600kg. Despite the unmodified
drivetrain, the
Tesla’s 100kW battery
pack is the largest in
motorsport.
No stranger to the
pressure of championship
races, in 2013
Jackson engineered a fouryear
plan to progress through
various championships and
series up to GT racing, eventually
reaching the highly
prestigious ‘Le Mans 24 hour’
endurance race.
Jackson is no stranger to
hours in the hot seat, having
previously worked with
aftermarket specialists,
DENSO Auto Parts on the
Track2Track challenge from
Moscow to London, driving
a Lotus Exige S fitted with
DENSO Iridium TT spark
plugs to celebrate the release
of the innovative part. Jackson
drove across nine countries
in 10 days for the challenge.
A Guinness World Record
holder with #recordroadtrip,
Jackson, alongside the
RAC and Audi, hold the title
for ‘most countries visited
on a single tank of fuel,’ The
trip began is Maastricht, NL
and continued through Belgium,
Luxembourg, France,
Switzerland, Liechtenstein,
Austria, Germany, Italy and
towards the Balkans in an
Audi A6 ultra. One tank
of fuel powered the Audi
through 14 countries and
1,158.9 miles, returning an
average fuel consumption of
75.9 mpg.
Jackson is currently a
brand ambassador for Morris
Lubricants, Tropic Soul,
Pertemps Driver Training
and M6 Toll. She also works
with sponsors Corbeau Seats
and Performance Physixx. To
THRIVING AUTOMECHANIKA BIRMINGHAM 2018
CLOSES ITS DOORS UNTIL 2019
More than 10,000 visit UK’s leading exhibition for the automotive industry
AUTOMECHANIKA
BIRMINGHAM,
the UK’s leading
exhibition for the
automotive aftermarket
and vehicle production
industry, has drawn to
a close, with 10,200 automotive
industry personnel
visiting the highly successful
2018 event.
The event featured 500
exhibitors from 26 countries
covering a floor space
of 9,400 square metres.
More than 120 companies
exhibited at Automechanika
Birmingham for the first
time including: AA Garage
Guide, Snap-On, Ceramex,
GSF Car Parts and Wurth
Electronics.
Immediate post-event
feedback highlighted a ‘quality’
visitor in attendance
and this, coupled with an
increased ratio of visitors to
exhibitors, meant the event
delivered an excellent opportunity
for the automotive
industry to come together,
network and do business.
The event, now in its third
year, will run again in 2019
before moving biennially to
alternate with Automechanika
Frankfurt. Leading suppliers
have already signed
up to Automechanika Birmingham
2019 including
Bosch, ZF, Denso, Hella,
Group, MANN + HUMMEL,
NGK, Valeo, Yuasa and Bilstein.
Reflecting the vibrancy of
the independent automotive
aftermarket, the new for
2018 ‘Garage Quarter’ was
a major highlight with independent
garages flocking
to see the very latest products
and services from more
than 130 suppliers, as well
as a Garage Social area, for
visitors to network and meet
similar minded businesses.
The Workshop Training
Hub attracted a large audience
throughout the event,
where visitors heard a num-
ber of wide-ranging presentations,
discussions on the
current state of the automotive
industry and, live demonstrations
on new product
technology.
It was also the setting of
the much-anticipated Garage
of the Year awards final.
The winner, Hillclimb
Garage of High Wycombe,
took to the stage to collect
the award and a £1,000
cash prize.
With new product launches
dominating the Aftermarket
Hall, along with
announcements of key distribution
agreements signed
between companies, the
event offered more than 70
hours of seminars, hosting
industry experts who
delivered sessions covering
daily workplace challenges,
industry developments and
advanced technology.
Returning for another
year, the Vehicle Production
Hall hosted the increasingly
successful ‘Meet the Buyer’
and ‘Open Forum’ events,
hosted by SMMT. The events
were successful in bringing
together automotive buyers
and suppliers to build relationships
between OEMs,
tier one suppliers and the
supply chain.
Innovation was also a key
theme in the Vehicle Production
Hall, with an enthralling
debate by the Women in Innovation
Panel, a Who’s Who
of key industry influencers.
Other key ‘innovation’
highlights included Motorsport
Valley Innovation. Presented
by the Motorsport
Industry Association (MIA),
and sponsored by Staubli,
this interactive area demonstrated
cutting edge technologies
in the motorsport and
high-performance engineering
industry.
Simon Albert, Managing
Director, Automechanika
Birmingham, said: “It’s been
a fantastic event and has further
developed the identity
of Automechanika Birmingham
going forward, underlining
our commitment to
unite the entire automotive
industry. We are delighted
with the quality and quantity
of senior professionals
who attended, as well as the
number of independent garages
that visited the hugely
popular Garage Quarter.”
Next year’s event at the
NEC Birmingham will take
place from 4 to 6 June
2019, with more exhibitor
and show announcements
to follow.
FOCUS Engine Parts 32
IS THE WHOLE
GREATER THAN
THE SUM?
Richard Barnett looks
at the parts that gets
your car going and
makes that engine
purr
THERE’S no denying
just how reliable
today’s engines are.
Whether they’re petrol-
or diesel-fuelled,
they are far more efficient
than their forebears, thanks
to better quality materials
and better manufacturing
processes.
But a later engine can still
fail, with the finger usually
being pointed at the car
owner for their neglect. And
that means there is still a
demand for replacement
pistons, valves, camshafts,
crankshafts and all those
other engine internals that
can fail.
Gaskets have changed
their status, and are no longer
regarded almost as consumables
when it comes to
33 focus Engine Parts
The great debate
Remanufactured or reconditioned?
Paula Huesca De Crean, Euro
Car Parts’ chief commercial
officer, says there is a
big difference between
remanufactured and
reconditioned engines,
the former being a
lengthy, involved process
requiring plenty of technical
understanding and skill.
ECP, working with Ivor Searle
and Vege, offers a 12-months
parts and labour warranty on its
remanufactured engines.
“To qualify as remanufactured,
an engine must be extensively
tested to achieve a level of
performance and reliability
equivalent to the original
engine. The ISO 9001 standard
details the testing procedure and
inspection process, dictating that all
key components, including piston
assemblies, large and small bearings,
as well as bushes, gaskets and seals,
timing chains and drive belts, must be
completely renewed,” De Crean says.
It’s important that motorists know
the difference between a remanufactured
and reconditioned engine, as De Crean explains: “A
reconditioned engine has been cleaned with some
damaged components replaced in an attempt to restore
it to its previous condition.
“However, reconditioning is a subjective process
and offers few guarantees to the end customer when it
comes to warranty, longevity and performance.
“Compared to the reconditioning process,
remanufactured engines go through a more thorough
process. Original units are stripped down to the core
and rebuilt from the ground up, using the highest quality
materials and engineering processes to return them
to original performance specification levels. In most
instances, performance is even improved.”
As well as keeping a car on the road, remanufactured
engines have a green side, using less core metal than
a new engine, with 85 percent of original components
returned to OE-specification. Remanufacturing also
uses 85 per cent less energy than other manufacturing
processes, ECP says.
engine. These days they are
more likely to be looked at
as an engine component,
thanks to their more complex
make-up and their
part played in making engines
more fuel efficient and
cleaner.
But when it comes to replacing
gaskets there is always
a temptation to
go for the cheapest,
rather than the most
suitable – a decision
that can be costly in
the long run.
According to Paul
Saunders, product
engineering director
at Federal-Mogul
Autoparts, engines
that are
designed-in a
bid for lower
emissions and
greater fuel
economy, not to
mention durability,
have had an
influence on gasket
design: “Gaskets
used in an engine are
now considered to be
part of an integrated engine
system, so it’s important to
use the correct gasket technology
for any given application.
“As an example, multi-layer
steel (MLS) cylinder head
gaskets are now commonly
used on light- and mediumduty
engines. These have the
advantage of offering a reduced,
yet consistent, gasket
thickness to help minimise
the dead air volume at the
combustion chamber which
will in turn contribute to improved
emissions.”
Replacing head gaskets requires
a greater awareness
of doing the job by the book,
and while that has always
been the case on modern engines
it becomes even more
important – and that includes
replacing head bolts.
“Many failures that happen
in service can often be attributed
to pre-ignition or detonation
in the combustion
process. This generates very
high spikes of combustion
pressure causing a fatigue
condition to exist leading to
gasket cracking, combustion
leakage and torching of the
gasket. Engine overheating
is another common cause of
gasket failure.”
Maybe not quite so expected
is how the state of
the roads can affect engine
parts, and sump pans in
particular. Rough surfaces,
potholes and speed bumps
can all catch and puncture
a sump pan, with serious
damage possibly reaching
the engine as a result. Corrosion,
too, can shorten a
sump pan’s life.
First Line’s 10-strong oil
sump range is made from
aluminium or steel, depending
on what was fitted as
OE. It includes the aluminium
sump used on the VAG
1.9TDi engine. Steel sump
pans are powder-coated for
longer life and all come with
a sump plug.
Diesel engines have been
the centre attention across
the media since the VW scandal
first became public, but
they remain popular with
motorists because of their
mix of performance and fuel
economy.
Modern diesels run to
more exacting tolerances
than their predecessors,
and, according to Denso,
with the average age of a diesel
car being almost seven
> continued from page 33
years old, many are now requiring
more attention than
just a service.
Injection repairs will become
more commonplace as
a car gets older, and Denso
says such work is a good
revenue-generator, although
there’s a need to effect repairs
in the correct conditions
due to the engine’s tolerances.
Because of the need
for ultra-clean conditions,
Denso has just five injector
repairers in England and
two in Ireland.
“Due to the working clearances
of two microns cleanliness
is crucial when it
comes to repairing an injector
the capital investment
for the facilities and testing
equipment is extremely high
but necessary to meet the exacting
standards of Denso,”
the company says.
“To repair an injector it
must be dismantled, cleaned
precisely and then re-assembled
in an air-conditioned,
pressurised, clean room. It
may seem overly cautious,
but the reasoning is well
founded. Even the smallest
piece of dirt can contaminate
a fuel injector’s nozzle,
which could cause it to stick
in the open position. If this
happens, the injector will
leak fuel into the cylinder
causing expensive damage
to the engine and a furrowed
brow of the customer when
they are presented with the
final bill.”
EURO CAR PARTS
LAUNCHES INTELLIGENT
REPAIR PROGRAMME
EURO CAR PARTS
has launched an Intelligent
Repair Programme
for repairers
and bodyshops,
enabling technicians to complete
minor body repairs in
rapid time.
The offering brings together
the vast stock range and
availability of Euro Car Parts
and LKQ Coatings, together
with the specialist service
and support provided by its
Workshop Solutions team.
The result is a single source
supply solution for the cosmetic,
rapid repair sector.
Through Euro Car Parts’
new Intelligent Repair Programme,
bodyshops and
repairers can upgrade their
workshops with the latest
equipment for wheel refurbishment,
windscreen and
interior repair, cosmetic
paint and paint-less dent
work, in addition to both
static and mobile spray
booths. IMI-accredited training
can also be accessed,
covering a complete portfolio
of bodyshop-specific
functions, including vehicle
damage assessment. Euro
Car Parts also offers workshops
the opportunity to
operate their own mobile repair
service, both supplying
the van and training operators
in the latest intelligent
repair technologies.
Not only does the service
enable repairers to offer additional
services through
minor body repairs, it also
provides existing bodyshops
with an effective way of reducing
key-to-key times, differentiating
their service.
Helen Robinson, Marketing
Director at Euro Car Parts, explained:
“Over the past three
to four years we’ve seen the
size of average independent
bodyshops becoming small-
er. Modern vehicles are often
equipped with advanced braking
systems, parking sensors
and lane avoidance systems,
causing fewer collisions than
the industry is used to. As a
result, bodyshops are working
to fixed cost models and
looking for cost effective and
immediate ways to return
vehicles to pre-accident condition.
“Our Intelligent Repair
Programme helps forwardthinking
bodyshops and repairers
to repair vehicles in
situ using rapid solutions at
a fixed price, capturing sales
under a customer’s insurance
excess level.”
Technical
TEASER
A
QUICK CALL to the
helpline revealed
these models can
be prone to timing
chain failure. Once
the garage had replaced the
timing chain, the car was
running smoothly with no
noise, however, the engine
light was now on and
a fault was present for
CAM shaft position. A
second call was made to
the helpline and the garage
was advised to recheck
the timing, but all seemed to
be correct. The garage then
replaced the CAM shaft position
sensor with no result.
In the last issue we looked at a 2011 Vauxhall
Mariva 1.4 litre petrol car came into the workshop
with an obvious rattle from the engine.
Next, the Technical Helpline
advisor asked the repairer to
remove the engine sump to
access the timing pin slot on
the CAM shaft. This revealed
there was a balancing mark
next to the timing slot into
which the repairer had put the
timing locking pin, resulting in
incorrect timing. After resetting
the timing again, the car
was repaired.
