Neander <strong>the</strong>y had a law declaring that, “whoever<br />

introduces new religions, <strong>the</strong> tendency and<br />

character of which are unknown, whereby <strong>the</strong><br />

minds of men may be disturbed, shall, if belonging<br />

to <strong>the</strong> higher rank, be banished; if to <strong>the</strong> lower,<br />

punished with death.”<br />

Christ and <strong>the</strong> Roman Law<br />

Jesus Christ was one of <strong>the</strong> lower rank, and He<br />

went up and down in Judea, teaching a new<br />

religion. The Pharisees knew this, and although<br />

<strong>the</strong>y hated and despised <strong>the</strong> Roman government,<br />

although <strong>the</strong>y plotted to overthrow it, although <strong>the</strong>y<br />

hoped that Jesus Christ, when He came, would lead<br />

a revolution against it, yet when <strong>the</strong>y saw that that<br />

was not His plan, <strong>the</strong>y purposed to get <strong>the</strong> Roman<br />

government to overthrow Him. And when it came<br />

to His trial, <strong>the</strong>y tried to get a condemnation from<br />

Pilate on <strong>the</strong> charge of blasphemy: for, <strong>the</strong>y said,<br />

“He made Himself <strong>the</strong> Son of God.” “When Pilate<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore heard that saying, he was <strong>the</strong> more afraid:<br />

and went again into <strong>the</strong> judgment hall, and saith<br />

unto Jesus, Whence art Thou? But Jesus gave him<br />
