Some poet has spoken of seeing sermons in<br />

stones, and this will be our study this morning--to<br />

see “sermons in stones.”<br />

“Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful<br />

bough by a well; whose branches run over <strong>the</strong> wall.<br />

The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at<br />

him, and hated him; but his bow abode in strength,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> arms of his hands were made strong by <strong>the</strong><br />

hands of <strong>the</strong> Mighty God of Jacob (from <strong>the</strong>nce is<br />

<strong>the</strong> shepherd, <strong>the</strong> stone of Israel).” “To whom<br />

coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed<br />

of men, but chosen of God and precious, ye also, as<br />

living stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy<br />

priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices,<br />

acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (Gen. 49:22-24;<br />

1Peter 2:4, 5) We shall see different cases, where,<br />
