How to Get There
Many Manila bus companies, like Partas, have daily
departures for the 270km, 7 to 8 hour journey to La
Union in clean, comfortable, air-conditioned coaches.
Which bus company to use is often best made on
convenience and the proximity of the nearest bus
terminal: price and conditions on board don’t vary a
great deal between the air-conditioned bus services
run by the better companies. It is best to avoid non
air-conditioned buses; if the heat doesn’t get you,
the pollution will.
The time between Manila and San Fernando is much
less by car and can be done comfortably in 4 to 5
hours. From the beginning of the expressway at
Balintawack the trip usually is quite fast and straightforward,
with adequate service stations along the
way for coffee, gas and the inevitable snack.
Asian Spirit airlines lists flights between Manila and
La Union, served by the former Wallace Air Base. Airline
schedules to some of the smaller destinations in
the Philippines are remarkably fickle and some time
spent with a travel agent or at Asian Spirit is more
likely to be fruitful than trying to book on-line.
So for the holiday of a lifetime La Union is the ultimate
answer. There is something for everyone in La Union
from sightseeing, waterfalls, arts and crafts, to some
of the best surfing in the Philippines, and now one
of the top surfing destinations in Asia.
