than just a course!<br />
The WEA opposite the Christchurch Art<br />
Gallery on Gloucester St, has been offering<br />
affordable adult education for over <strong>10</strong>0<br />
years. A recent survey of participants and<br />
tutors shows that it is about more than just<br />
the courses it runs. Kazuko who teaches<br />
Japanese arts and culture says “It’s my home<br />
away from home, a home of learning”. The<br />
homely feel and warm welcome you get<br />
on stepping through the door indicate an<br />
inclusive, caring culture - values which<br />
have long been held high at the WEA. With<br />
discussion clubs like “The Thinkers Group”,<br />
courses on Women’s Suffrage and Armchair<br />
travel as well as regular speaker slots called<br />
“The Social Issues Soap Box”, a community<br />
of learners are being encouraged to explore,<br />
analyze and expand their horizons.<br />
As our emerging city seeks to position<br />
itself as progressive and forward thinking it<br />
is clear that this centrally located education<br />
hub has a key role to play: it gives us space<br />
to reflect on, learn about and challenge the<br />
world we see around us - whilst nurturing<br />
community both in and outside the<br />
classroom.<br />

NZ Massage<br />
Therapy Diplomas<br />
by Distance Learning<br />
The New Zealand College of Chinese<br />
Medicine now offers both the NZ Diploma<br />
in Wellness and Relaxation Massage Level 5<br />
and the NZ Diploma in Remedial Massage<br />
Level 6 on line, becoming the first private<br />
training provider in New Zealand to offer<br />
these qualifications nationally by Blended<br />
Learning (Distance Learning and Block<br />
courses). This exciting development<br />
provides learners with choice and flexibility<br />
about how and when they study and<br />
enables much greater access to these NZQA<br />
approved massage qualifications.<br />
Both Diplomas are one-year full time<br />
courses. Students may study part time<br />
if they wish. The course design of both<br />
qualifications comprises distance on line<br />
learning modules in theory and on campus<br />
practical block modules offered either at the<br />
College’s Auckland campus or regionally<br />
where numbers of enrolments justify this.<br />

the supervised practical requirements<br />
to register as a<br />
massage therapist<br />
with Massage New<br />
Zealand.<br />

obtain the latest internationally recognised<br />
New Zealand registered qualification in<br />
their field and open the door to a wide<br />
range of employment opportunities.<br />
Students who complete the level 6<br />
programme may pathway to bachelor’s<br />
degrees in Massage Therapy.<br />
