NEWS BRIEFS Crown Corporations report fiscal results In 2017-18, SaskEnergy says it invested in projects to move high pressure transmission pipelines away from cities, while significantly increasing capacity to serve the growing number of homes, businesses and industries that rely on natural gas. In 2017-18, SaskEnergy recorded income before adjustments of $110 million, compared to $70 million for the 12-month period ending March 31, 2017. The corporation declared a dividend of $39 million to Crown Investments Corporation (CIC). In its annual report, it was noted that during the last year, SaskEnergy added more than 3,700 new customers to its distribution system, bringing its total customer base to more than 394,000. Annual transmission volumes increased by seven per cent, from a year ago. SaskTel reported 2017-18 net income of $121.0 million and operating revenues of $1,253.2 million for the year ending March 31, 2018. Revenues were down $29.6 million (2.3 per cent) from the same period in 2016-17 primarily due to the economic environment, regional wireless pricing, changing consumer behaviour, and increasing competition impacting SaskTel’s opportunities to offset revenue declines from legacy wireline services. SaskTel paid dividends of $89.9 million to Crown Investment Corporation during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018, an increase of $59.9 million over the previous year. During the last five fiscal years, SaskTel paid a total of $307.2 million in dividends while maintaining a debt ratio within industry standards. SaskPower also reported its 2017-18 financial figures last week. Last year, SaskPower invested $996 million into the provincial power grid. While meeting a 5.4 per cent increase in power demand, SaskPower also kept on track to meet and exceed federal emission regulations by 2030. In 2017-18, Sask- Power recorded a net income of $146 million, up from $56 million in 2016- 17. This result was primarily due to lower natural gas prices, the significant increase in demand, and recent rate increases. In its media release announcing the financial results, SaskPower did not reveal how much of a dividend, if any, they paid to the province (through Crown Investments Corporation) last year, however an official later confirmed that no dividend will be paid to the province by SPC for the 2017-18 year. Update on HBR sale discussions On July 10, 2018 Hudson Bay Railway (HBR) provided an update on the potential sale of the line and the repair process, following a statement last week that the sale had fallen through. Sergio Sabatini, President of Hudson Bay Railway, said, “We are pleased to announce that our negotiations with the consortium resumed on Monday, July 9, and we are once again in active discussions to finalize the sale of the HBR. We believe that an expeditious transfer of ownership of the line is best for all concerned, and we are making every effort to advance sale discussions. This includes initiating the repair process, so that we are in the best position to complete a transaction.” HBR confirmed that an RFP has been issued through its engineering firm AE- COM and they will be coordinating site visits with six interested contractors, each of whom will have the opportunity to conduct an inspection of the line via helicopter before finalizing their bids. The company also reaffirmed its intention to appeal the recent CTA decision, noting that it has initiated a multi-step legal process. The HBR has previously stated that is not in a position to fund completion of necessary repairs in the absence of a sale agreement or government funding. Monday, July 16, 2018 • Last Mountain Times Watrous RCMP activities On June 9th at approximately 9:20 am, Watrous RCMP were called to a report of an erratic driver in Nokomis. As a result of witness statements being obtained, RCMP charged 28 year old Raylene McKay of Nokomis with driving without reasonable consideration for others, driving without a valid license and stunting. On June 20th at 3:30 pm Watrous RCMP were advised of a possible impaired driver who had just left the Credit Union. A description of the driver and the vehicle were obtained and a vehicle matching the description was located a short time later and a traffic stop was initiated. 33 year old Dustin Hendricks of Young was charged with Refusal to Provide a Breath Sample and Driving While Suspended. On June 24th at 1:30 am Watrous RCMP were called to an assault complaint in Young. As a result of the investigation, 37 year old Vernon Mosier of Young was charged with Assault, Uttering Threats, Pointing a Firearm, Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public, and Possessing a Firearm while Prohibited. Following his arrest, he was further charged with two counts of Uttering Threats to Police and Mischief for damaging a Police Cruiser. Later that morning RCMP were called back to Young to investigate another assault complaint. The complainant stated they had been jumped by two men during a disagreement. This investigation resulted in 55 year old Jim MacMillan and 30 year old Cale MacMillan of Young each being charged with one count of assault. On July 7th at 1:00 am RCMP responded to an assault compliant in Liberty. On arriving it was learned the suspect had already left for Regina. After initial interviews enough evidence was gathered for the issuance of a warrant for arrest for 38 year old Michael Dean Waller of Regina for one count of assault.
