Orland Township strolls back to
the 1950s with Sock Hop party
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
The 1950s saw letterman
jackets and poodle skirts at
the height of fashion, while
the jukebox was filled with
music from Elvis Presley,
Buddy Holly and The Platters.
On Thursday, July 12,
Orland Township transported
folks back to this booming
era with its 1950s Sock
Hop dinner and dance at the
Orland Chateau.
The annual event is a favorite
among attendees and
Orland Township staff alike.
“I think this dance is the
most fun, because it brings
people back to the ’50s and
the music is a lot of fun,” explained
Marie Ryan, Orland
Township’s senior services
coordinator. “People like to
dress up in the style of the
’50s and bring it all back.
It’s fun music, fun times and
good memories for everybody,
so it’s all positives.
“We have a lot of good
dancers, too.”
Orland Park residents
Holly and Dominic Tocci
have been attending and volunteering
at Orland Township
events for many years,
and they love that the Sock
Hop captures the essence of
the ’50s.
“The music is wonderful
— and you can understand
what they’re saying — and
the various dances like The
Stroll, The Jitterbug and the
Hula-Hoop contests are all
wonderful,” Holly said.
“And the artists,” Dominic
added. “It all started with
Elvis and Buddy Holly —
guys who brought class into
music — and everybody had
a great time. That’s how we
grew up. We always remember
going to dances. That’s
