How many people go to Sydney purely to see the opera house? We could do our own masterpiece, but we need to be bold, rather than dismissing every idea because of this outdated “English garden town” idea that no longer applies. Readers respond to Mayor Lianne Dalziel’s column last week in which she said ratepayers “had a right to know” the cost of the controversial $1.24 million central library touch wall Hamish Middleton – So she believes $1.24 million was a good purchase price. Wow. I’d be investigating exactly how the purchase was researched, tendered and authorised. Who was at the table in the first instance and said ‘you know what, let’s buy a million dollar TV for our library’? It could have been installed in the future when matters become more settled. How dare the mayor justify this and other unnecessary purchases then approve the immediate ratepayer increases and the future ones as well. Stephan Lance Gardiner – You’re all complaining about something that would absolutely be required in this day and age in a main library. In fact I think it would be a very stupid decision not to. And if you think it’s high then clearly you have no clue about what stuff costs. There were many things considered for interactive use. But ultimately this was the cheapest and best option. Mayor Lianne Dalziel Taking a stand against plastic PRODUCT stewardship, the circular economy, advance disposal fees – these phrases may mean nothing to you now, but when we take an honest look at how much single-use plastic we produce, use and then dump, we are going to have to look for solutions. At the Local Government New Zealand conference hosted in Christchurch this week, we endorsed a remit to tackle singleuse plastics, like supermarket bags and plastic straws. It is estimated that New Zealanders use 1.6 billion single-use plastic bags each year, with each bag used for an average of 12min before being disposed of. But they are just the tip of the iceberg. If you didn’t see Sunday on television last weekend, I suggest you do so. What an eye-opener. The minister of conservation challenged us to rethink the phrase ‘throwing rubbish away’. She said there is no mythical ‘away’ – the rubbish has to go somewhere. At the conference we also decided to work with Government on recycling. In Christchurch, we have our own company Eco- Central, which takes care of our recyclable waste. As a result, we have been buffeted from the true cost of disposal – until last year when world prices plummeted in the wake of China’s decision to close its doors to the world’s waste. New Zealanders produce per household on average threetonne of waste every year. It has to go somewhere and we will have to pay the price.
