The last decade has seen a shift <strong>in</strong> the distribution of economic power away from the United States, Europe<br />
and other advanced economies. Although GDP <strong>in</strong> the advanced economies is still much higher than <strong>in</strong> the<br />
emerg<strong>in</strong>g economies, the gap is narrow<strong>in</strong>g. Changes <strong>in</strong> the share of trade and <strong>in</strong>vestment broadly mirror this,<br />
and emerg<strong>in</strong>g economies are now play<strong>in</strong>g an active <strong>role</strong> <strong>in</strong> the process of economic globalisation. The recent<br />
global f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis is likely to accelerate these trends, and it is unclear how this will affect the future of trade<br />
negotiations.<br />
