Westwood.
He is a pure Yorkshireman.
If Ben Westwood was a food
he would be a tin of spam or
a pork pie.
He is a great player and a lot of people
who watch rugby, but don’t know the
ins or outs of it, will not notice
everything that he does.
He will admit that he is not the best
trainers but for him not to train at a high
intensity and then to throw himself fully
into a game is unbelievable. He may
not be the captain but he is a leader for
all of us. He has helped me out in my
career too.

The signing of Ben and Nathan Wood from
Wakefield Trinity in 2002 were very
important for us for they were key players
in our battle against to beat relegation.
Ben was a big powerful centre then, but it
was a natural progression for him to move
into the pack because I do not think he
was bright enough to be a three-quarter.
Once he moved into the forwards his game
steadily developed. Playing out on the right
he is at the top of his game week in and
week out. He is Mr consistency, punching
holes in the opposition and his defence is
awesome. And he is not bothered about
mixing it with the props in the middle.
For a forward he has a lot of skill.
He is so consistent and he can play 80
minutes every week. With his deadpan
look he always looks a bit miffed if he is
brought off before the end if the game,
but he is probably just showing off to the
fans.
But that serious look does hide a
mischievous streak. When he arrived here
he lived next door to Nathan Wood and
paid a visit when Nathan was out. Ben
moved the television and furniture out of
the living room into the garden. When
Woody arrived home he thought he had
been burgled and was ready to call the
police at one stage.
Ben has so many talents off the field it
makes you sick. He is very good with
computers and plays the piano very well.
Catalan Dragons have a piano in the
club and when we visit Perpignan Ben is
always ready to play. And he just loves his
guitar. He is so very talented.
What I really find staggering is the level he
reaches in every match. He is so
consistent and yet he does not train very
well.
He does not like training. In
fact he is worse than me.
Ben’s attitude and explanation
is do not use up energy
training, save it for match day.
He makes it sound reasonable and logical,
for a forward. Could he be any better if he
trained more? I doubt it.
Ben deserves all the accolades he
receives. He sets his standards so high.
He is, in my opinion, the best back row
forward in the world.
