STEVE MCNAMARA I had the pleasure of playing and training alongside Ben at Wakefield in 2000. It was immediately clear that he was a young man with some of the best ‘raw’ talent within the club. What was equally clear was that he was a no frills, no fuss type of kid who just loved to play. Those traits have stayed with him throughout the whole of his career and have helped make him the quality player and person that he is. I also had the disadvantage of playing against Ben as a player whist I was at the Huddersfield Giants, I say disadvantage as he was one of the most toughest, rugged and uncompromising players I ever played against. His relish for a physical challenge was and still is second to none, whilst his non stop energy and ethic means you never get a moments rest from him. Now having the opportunity to coach Ben at international level is one of the many real joys of my job. Amongst all the other attributes i have mentioned it is only at this stage that i have come to realise just how skilful and intelligent he is in all aspects of the game. This combined with his absolute loveable attitude towards all of his international team mates sets him apart from the rest. Without even trying Ben is one of the funniest blokes around, his video diary during the 2011 Four Nations is legendary amongst the England setup and made him our very own ‘An idiot at Home!’ Good luck Ben, I wish you all the very best in your testimonial year, you thoroughly deserve it.
