YORKSHIRE
DAY
No wonder Yorkshire has its own designated day
every year on 1 August. The stunning landscape and
rich history of the UK’s largest county has inspired
generations of artists, including Turner and Hockney,
Henry Moore, the Brontë sisters and Alan Bennett to
name just a few. The county is the birthplace to some
big historical game changers too, from Guy Fawkes and
William Wilberforce to Amy Johnson and if we’re talking
game changers, Geoffrey Boycott, Jessica Ennis-Hill
and Nicola Adams are amongst the famous sporting
heroes heralding from Yorkshire.
With rich fertile soil, Yorkshire is a source of fantastic
food; and not just the famous pudding and
Wenslydale Cheese! Home to the rhubarb triangle
and renowned for producing the worlds’ best
asparagus, local lamb benefits from grazing on the
grass and moorlands which have kept flocks content
for centuries. October to January is the best time
for feathered game and crab and lobster landed
from the North Sea is some of the best in Europe.
It’s not surprising then that Yorkshire is home to more
Michelin starred restaurants than anywhere outside
of London.
