Some of the most celebrated houses in the<br />

world have become such, not just because<br />

of the vibrancy of their walls, the luminosity<br />

of their windows or the verdancy of their gardens,<br />

but because of the lives lived there. The inhabitants<br />

of a building have as much, if not more impact<br />

on the atmosphere that is left behind.<br />

What would the Georgian terrace house in Doughty<br />

Street, Holborn be without the legacy of Charles<br />

Dickens’ residence there (and his actual writing<br />

desk…)? The grey stone Yorkshire parsonage that<br />

was home to the Brontë sisters would be a pretty<br />

country residence, but the lingering energies of those<br />

extraordinary siblings raises it to another level entirely.<br />

Archer Lodge in St Leonards is just one of those<br />

houses. Whilst not (yet) world famous, its charm and<br />

spirit are entirely down to the creative dreams and<br />
