said Mr MacDonald.
He said the matter has not
yet been discussed by the board
and a date has not been set for a
submissions committee to convene.
However, Mr Campbell
said the current alcohol ban
in Merivale, which could be
extended, is a night-time ban
only, so that wouldn’t be an
issue.
“You aren’t going
A SPLIT has emerged in a
community board over a bid to
extend alcohol restrictions.
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board deputy
chairman Aaron Campbell said
last week he would like to see
alcohol bans extended to include
areas such as Elmwood Park,
Roto Kohatu Reserve in Harewood,
and McLeans Island.
In response, board
chairman Sam
MacDonald says
other members on the
board, including himself,
do not support Mr
Campbell’s view. Mr
MacDonald believes
the board needs to be
careful about becoming
a “nanny-state” to
residents and “imposing
unnecessary and punitive rules
when there doesn’t appear to be
an issue.”
“He is entitled to his view, but
that would mean taking away
the right for people who play
Sam MacDonald
confiscate the alcohol
or give them a verbal
warning. No everyone’s going to
be hoarded off and handcuffed, I
think the nanny-state comment is
dismissive and not quite cognitive
of what the idea of the measure
might be.”
I GET the feeling there is a bit of
competition brewing between Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood Community Board
chairman Sam MacDonald and the board
deputy Aaron Campbell (page 1).
The spark was Campbell’s views regarding alcohol bans
around the north-west of the city.
MacDonald was quick to let us know it wasn’t his or other
board members’ views. Nothing wrong with that of course.
MacDonald points out an alcohol ban at Elmwood Park could
have an impact on sports people.
There is an election coming in 2019 and I’ll bet both
MacDonald and Campbell - who come form different political
backgrounds - will put their hands-up to make it onto full
council. Testy times ahead?
Cracroft residents win name battle
• By Ashleigh Monk
CRACROFT residents
have won their battle not to be
referred to as Hoon Hay on their
rates bills.
From this week, the bills will
have Cracroft in the address
section.
In May, the Spreydon-Cashmere
community board heard
concerns from the Cracroft Residents’
Association as their rates
and valuations bills listed them
as being a part of Hoon Hay, or
Hoon Hay Valley.
City councillor for the Spreydon
Ward Phil Clearwater said
Cracroft was a registered suburb
and should be referred to as such.
“It’s on the map as a suburb,
so I think it’s fair to say the mail
dealt with a similar situation in
Somerfield.
“It’s a bit tricky because there
was this whole thing about
where does Beckenham end
and Somerfield begin, and then
Spreydon? We had to be careful
about how we dealt with it.”
He said the city council actually
had a policy to define suburbs
so that residents’ associations
would not clash.
“The advantage of that was it
meant that one residents’ group
area was quite clear about which
residents they should work with,”
he said.
“At times, of course, there was
a bit of intruding on other associations’
patches, and that
was why the policy was drawn
up.”
City council transactions manager
Paul Curgenven said the
confusion around Cracroft were
due to unclear borders.
“While Cracroft is the only
suburb in Christchurch that has
been geographically defined by
the NZ Geographic Board, there
was not an exact boundary for
the suburb.”
He said a correction of the
rates and valuation bills would
be implemented this week.
COURT APPEARANCE
A 39-year-old man accused of doing
donuts at Hornby’s Leslie Park
last month will appear in court
today. He is charged with operating
a motor vehicle causing sustained
loss of traction, failing to
stop, wilful damage and driving
with excess breath alcohol. The
man was previously scheduled
to appear last Thursday, but was
again delayed. The incident was
the second time in this year that
the home ground of the Hornby
Panthers was vandalised.
BUS STOP WANTED
A school bus parking space may
School in order to reduce
congestion and safety concerns.
The school principal approached
the Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
about the issue on Waimairi Rd.
There is no dedicated school bus
parking space, which can often
force the buses to double park,
causing congestion and unsafe
situations for children and road
users.
alcohol plan
•From page 1
Board member Shirish Paranjape
said he would like to discuss the
matter together with the board
before commenting on it.
Waimairi Ward councillor Raf
Manji said he has not seen any
formal report on the matter, but it
doesn’t appear as “a pressing issue
for those parks and reserves.”
Fendalton Ward councillor
Jamie Gough said he agrees Mr
MacDonald and is surprised Mr
Campbell would express his views
before the board had a formal or
informal discussion about it.
However, board member David
Cartwright said he wasn’t aware of
any huge issues in the areas, if the
police were to come to the board
about any, he would be the first to
move the motion.
“My view is that it’s not required
right now but I’m not totally ruling
it off the table.”
Mr Cartwright said McLeans
problematic area previously, for
attracted police attention.
Memorial to mark air force crash
• By Anan Zaki
FIVE YEARS of planning and
fundraising to commemorate
the deadliest air force crash on
New Zealand soil has come to
fruition.
A plaque will be placed in a
Wigram subdivision, close to
where the crash took place on
October 15, 1953. Its unveiling
is planned for October at Erling
Ziesler Lane, Wigram, which is
a street named after one of the
pilots who was killed.
Retired engineer and Halswell
Residents’ Association member
Ron Fensom was delighted the
work he began in 2014 paid off.
He said the time was needed to
choose an appropriate location,
draw up landscape plans, design
the plaque and finalising the
costings.
“It’s been a long trek but it’s
come together nicely and I’m
very pleased with the support
he said.
“Being in the residents’
association, I heard just by
chance from a neighbour that the
air crash took place, so I decided
to work from that point on and
make sure the site is identified,”
Mr Fensom said.
The date of the unveiling is yet
to be confirmed.
The plaque is estimated to
The remainder of the money was
raised through private donations.
“When I started working on
Board
settles on
Maori name
• By Anan Zaki
Fire rages, homes at risk
A COMMUNITY board has
presented its amended Maori
name to the city council.
Along with other community
boards in the city, the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board was given a Maori name last
month. But it “respectfully” asked
for a different name.
The board was initially named
Wainui, but chairman Mike Mora
said it could cause confusion with
Wainui, on Banks Peninsula.
The city council’s Ngai Tahu
relationships team gave it the new
name of Waipuna, which means
water spring. Mr Mora said the
new name was “appropriate” for
the area.
“Wai [is] for water and Puna
is for spring. [It is appropriate]
Because we do have the headwaters
of the three rivers, starting from
springs in our Wards,” he said.
The Avon, Halswell and Heathcote
Rivers both begin within the
community board’s boundaries,
Mr Mora said. The Cashmere and
Riccarton streams also flowed
through the area, he said.
The Maori names for the remaining
boards in the city also
begin with Wai.
raise funds for the New Zealand
Breast Cancer Foundation.
In 2008, Mrs Barrett’s father,
Robert Dollery, died from breast
cancer.
“He actually had lung cancer
but it was secondary from a
strange cancer that originated
in the breast that normally
pregnant woman have,” she
said.
Mrs Barrett says she chose the
breast cancer foundation because
of the amazing work they do.
“It’s just touched so much of
my life it just seemed like the
perfect charity to raise money
for and so I decided I would do a
fundraiser,” she said.
The event will be held on Mrs
Barrett’s birthday, September 1,
at the Lincoln Event Centre.
Friends and bandmates have
helped her organise the night,
which will feature a number
of acts including TribalDiva
Belly Dance Company, burlesque
performer and comic Ashleigh
Blair, ballroom and latin dance
phenomenon Saphire and Steel,
GOOD CAUSE: Left to right – Bec Cortesi, Desley Tucker, Bex Barrett, Penny Curran and Kim
McDrury.
musicians Southfield, jazz singer
Georgia Catherine, Fan Dancers
and her own band, Hypnumb.
The master of ceremonies
for the night will be Nathan
Bonner or as he’s better known,
MulletMan. Mrs Barrett says he
will help bring the whole show
together.
“I think he’s incredibly talented
in his act, so he does a lot
of circus type acts, but he’s also
really, really funny and a really
lovely guy,” she said.
Mrs Barrett says the event will
be “a great night out in Lincoln.”
“If we can sell 200 tickets . . .
then we should be giving at least
over $4000 to the foundation
which would be lovely,” she said.
Doors will open at 6.30pm,
with the show starting at 7pm.
Poison warning for
Local
News
Now
Burnside’s
Fire rages, homes at risk
A&P Showgrounds
• By Anan Zaki
THE A&P Showgrounds will
now display signs for rabbit
poison, after it emerged that
baits were deployed without
warning.
Concerns were raised on social
media by a dog walker who
came across the rabbit poison
baits nine days ago.
The post sparked a reaction
from a number of social media
users, some raising concern
about the potential for their pets
and children to be touching the
poison bait.
A&P Showgrounds operations
manager Dugald Thomas said
poison baits were of no risk
to anyone as they were placed
under buildings and shipping
containers.
The baits were placed on July
27. The type of poison that was
deployed was called Pindone.
Dogs could only be poisoned
if they ate between 300 and 400g
of the bait, he said.
“They would have to eat loads
to get poisoned.”
He believed it was unnecessary
as dogs should be under the
control of their owners.
POISON: Rabbits die between four to 11 days after consuming
Pindone.
“Legally people are supposed
to have dogs on a lead at all
times in the park,” Mr Thomas
said. “We will probably put signs
up [next time], where it will be
laid there will be signs.”
The Department of Conservation
said that Pindone is a cereal
based bait, dyed green. The toxin
reduces blood clotting resulting
in internal haemorrhage and
death occurs in rabbits four to 11
days after consumption.
Landcare Research stated that
there has been little research
done on Pindone compared to
other poison baits such as 1080.
bid to win
spelling bee
FIVE BURNSIDE High School
students will attempt to gain a
spot in the national spelling bee
grand-final today.
Top spellers from around
the central and upper South
Island have travelled to
Christchurch to compete at the
regional semi-final. Now in
its 14 th year, the New Zealand
Spelling Bee is a competitive
spelling event aimed at
encouraging year 0-10 students
to improve their knowledge of
the English language, as well
as their spelling capabilities,
comprehension and
communication skills. The year
9 and 10 students competing
today earned their places out of
a field of hundreds of spellers
from more than 100 secondary
schools and colleges around
the country. The competition
began with a written classroom
test, which found the top 200
spellers in the country to go
head-to-head in six regional
semi-finals. The top three
students from each region
will then compete for the title
of New Zealand Spelling Bee
champion at the national final
in Wellington on November
3. The winner will receive the
Spelling Bee Trophy and $5000
to put towards their academic
studies. Founder Janet Lucas
started the competition in
2005 after being inspired by
Spellbound, a documentary
film about the United Statesbased
Scripps National Spelling
Bee. The calibre of spellers
improves every year, said Ms
Lucas.
She cites a nail-biting final
last year which she describes
as “the toughest and longest
competition we have ever had”.
“The talent is stronger than
ever, and I can’t wait to find
the best spellers . . . the New
Zealand Spelling Bee is fiercely
competitive in a fun way,” Ms
Lucas said.
IMPORTANT: In this week’s Soapbox, a community board member discusses
transparency around the interactive touch wall for Tūranga, Christchurch’s new
central library.
Transparency in spending
is vitally important
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community
Board member Shirish
Paranjape talks about
transparency in
governance
TRANSPARENCY is
one of the prime tenets in
governance, including local
governance.
Transparency is a very
broad subject and can
include transparency in
decision-making as well as
transparency in spending.
Transparency in spending
is critically important,
particularly when it is
someone else’s money.
As a country, New
Zealand can be justifiably
proud of its reputation
globally. If we look at the
indices published annually
by Transparency International,
New Zealand has
consistently been among
the top three. In 2017, New
Zealand had the No 1 position.
However, if we go by the
happenings around us, the
city of Christchurch will
perhaps not be a contender
for any such high ranking
for transparency. Sadly,
more than once, the city
council has come under
fire for not being transparent.
It is always a sorry state
of affairs when taxpayers
or ratepayers have to knock
the doors of the Ombudsman
against a city council.
Even worse when the directives/recommendations
issued by the Ombudsman
are ignored by the city
council, and the Ombudsman
has to knock on the
doors of the Attorney-
General to step in.
Without going through
who is right, who is wrong
– those in public offices, including
the employed staff
and elected members of
city council – must recognise
that if they are hiding
something – intentionally
or otherwise – things will
catch up sooner or later.
Also, full/more transparency
ought to be exercised
particularly when the price
of the item is high, or the
“value” is subjective. For
example, a million dollar
spend on a piece of art will
always incur more public
scrutiny than the same
amount spent on a roading
or pumping project.
The worst thing those
in office can do is either to
hide behind “commercial
sensitivity” or delay, block
or ignore requests.
Chances are, if one is
hiding something, something
is not right.
One can only hope
that the digital wall was
an isolated incident with
city council, and that the
authorities will not act as a
wall in future, figuratively
speaking.
Awards recognise standout hairdressers
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Anan Zaki
IN THE remote Australian
outback, two Hornby
hairdressers were in tears of
joy.
It was because Just Cuts
Hornby’s husband and
wife owners Angela and
Michael Turner picked up
the company’s franchisee of
the year award, beating 23
other Just Cuts salons in the
country.
The awards were held in
Alice Springs.
Originally from Farnham
and London, England, Mr
and Mrs Turner took over at
Just Cuts Hub Hornby two
years ago.
Mrs Turner said her
employees deserved plaudits
for the customer feedback
they received.
“We’ve done it with an
amazing team of stylists, who
are so committed and own
the business as much as we
do. And the fabulous clients,
they rock.”
When she picked up the
award with her husband of 23
years, emotions were hard to
control.
“I burst into tears, I was
holding it together on the
stage having to say a few
things. But just massive
elation,” Mrs Turner said.
Just Cuts founder and chief
executive Denis McFadden
said the couple have
“consistently” stood out in
their performances.
The goal now is to do it all
over again, Mrs Turner said.
“It’s all very well getting to
number one, now we’ve got to
stay there.”
The couple also won the
New Zealand awards for best
local area marketing and Just
Cuts best practice.
Merivale woman gives homeless a chance
• By Sarla Donovan
STREET WISE is providing help
of a different kind to the city’s
homeless.
Merivale’s River Jayden helped
found the charity three months
ago while working as a building
apprentice in the central city.
It provides food, clothes and
advocacy for those sleeping
rough.
“We’ve been going for three
months and it’s been pretty full
on,”said Ms Jayden, who is the
charity’s chairwoman.
“We give the guys coffee, cakes,
chats. It’s the fun stuff mainly,
but through that we can also find
out about their situation and refer
them on to housing programmes
or drug and alcohol support.”
While homelessness is
“definitely” a big problem in the
central city, there is a less visible
homeless population living on
the outskirts which people may
be less aware of, Ms Jayden said.
“It’s those sleeping on couches,
in garages, in cars. It’s a massive
issue – 41,000 people experience
homelessness in New Zealand.
Of them, most are living with
whanau and friends in overcrowded
homes.” She said a small
percentage of homeless people
sleep on the street.
Funding to support the work
Street Wise does is tight, but Ms
Jayden said “there are creative
ways to find the money to do
these projects. I’m confident we
can make it happen. We have a
good amount of support from
investors.”
A community pot luck for
homeless whanau held at nonprofit
cafe Exchange Christchurch
on Saturday saw 80 people
attend.
The function, called Everybody
Eats provided free haircuts, barista
training, care packages and
baking, motivational speakers,
dinner and an open jam session.
Ms Jayden said she eventually
wanted Street Wise to provide
a transitional facility to support
people to move into permanent
housing.
Former CBHS squash player makes NZ
• By Jacob Page
A FAMILY visit to England has
earned former Christchurch Boys’
High School squash player, Joe
Williams a national call-up.
The 22-year-old will represent
New Zealand for the first time
at the World University Squash
Championships in Birmingham,
England, in September.
Williams will be one of four
Kiwi players at the event and the
only one from the South Island.
He took up squash when he
started boarding at Christchurch
Boys’ High School and now plays
for the Lincoln University club
where he has just completed
studying.
It was a far cry from the sheep
and beef farm he grew up on
a sheep and beef farm in Little
Akaloa and is hoping to one day
run it himself.
“At home the nearest squash
court was over an hour away,” he
said.
“CBHS was also very good at
squash during the time I was
there with Paul Coll (current
world No 10), the head boy at
Adam’s House where I boarded
when I first started.”
Both his parents played squash
socially and that motivated him
to give it a go.
“I wasn’t much of a fan of football
or rugby,” he said.
“I quickly fell in love with the
sport and after a few low level
junior tournaments and I started
to take it more seriously when
Paul McFadzien offered to coach
me.
NZ REP: Former CBHS squash player Joe Williams will represent
New Zealand at the World University Squash Championships in
Birmingham, England in September.
“My first memory of squash
would have to be playing against
my family at Squashways, particularly
playing my Dad who
beat me easily,” he said.
“I have never beaten him as he
gave up before I could.”
A trip England to visit relatives
offered him the chance to pull on
the silver fern.
“In finishing my B.Ag, I decided
that I would like to go overseas
to England to visit my mother’s
half of the family and experience
the high level of squash played in
England.
SPORTS
“New Zealand Squash advertised
about these championships
being on in Birmingham and I
was more than keen to play as I
may never get a chance to play in
a world event again.”
Williams had no expectation on
how he will go in the event.
“Since I do not know the standard
of people playing in the event
I can not say, although being able
to play squash in Yorkshire has
already started to improve my
game and fitness, so I’m hoping
I can surprise myself by doing
quite well,” he said.
WINNERS: St Andrew’s College first XI hockey team won the
Connetic Challenge Shield 1-0 from Timaru Boys’ High School
on Wednesday.
Late goal seals win
• By Jacob Page
THE ST Andrew’s College first
XI boys hockey team used a
transplanted Timaruvian to
take the Connetic Challenge
Shield from Timaru Boys’ High
School, on Wednesday.
Former Timaru primary
and intermediate hockey star,
Harrison Darling scored the
lone goal of the game with two
minutes to play.
The win also helped St
Andrew’s earn a semi-final spot
in the Canterbury secondary
school competition.
The shield was introduced
at the start of the season and
initially given to Christ’s
College as champions before
TBHS won it off them.
St Andrew’s coach Ben Owers
said it was a thrilling game
against a quality team.
“It looks like both teams
will make the semi-finals and
(TBHS) had a goal disallowed
so it was a very good game,” he
said.
Owers said having a
maximum of three more games
in the competition would be
beneficial.
We even pulled off our goalie
in search for the goal which is
always good to try for when we
might need it at Rankin.”
The Rankin Cup is the top
tier national secondary school
tournament and is the pinnacle
of the secondary school season.
“It’s a tough tournament, not
just with the quality of teams
but the need to play seven
games in six days.”
St Andrew’s will play St Bede’s
on Friday in the final match of
the season where the shield is
on the line.
The Rankin Shield tournament
will be held at Blake Park in Mt
Maunganui from September 3 to
September 8.

Volleyball star on rise in US
Tuesday August 7 2018
SPORTS
WESTERN NEWS
• By Jacob Page
FORMER RICCARTON High
School volleyballer, Carla Butler
has made the most of her first
year on a US college scholarship.
Having initially signed a
scholarship in May last year at
Pasco-Hernando State College,
Florida, a National Junior
College Atheletics Association
division two volleyball school,
the 19-year-old has moved 45
minutes south to Hillsborough
Community College.
Hillsborough, also in Florida,
has a NJCAA division one
programme and started preseason
last week.
Butler had a phenomenal
freshman year at Pasco-
Hernando State with the team
placing seventh at the national
championship.
She was also named her team’s
most valuable player.
She was also selected for
the NJCAA division two
championship all-tournament
team and the Catawba Valley
Invitational all-tournament
team.
To top it off she was named
NJCAA second team all-
American.
Butler was a member of the
Riccarton High School senior A
team from years 10 to 13 and left
school at the end of 2016.
She also played for New
Zealand youth and junior teams
while attending Riccarton High.
“It wasn’t an easy change,” she
said.
“Having to say goodbye to the
team and the volleyball program
was hard but I knew it was best
for myself to leave to better my
game and reach my highest
potential.
“The HCC volleyball team
made my moving experience
easy and I was able to adapt
quickly to change of apartments,
team and hot weather.
“I think HCC was a great
change there are many
internationals on the team so it
makes you feel more comfortable
knowing there are others that
relate to you,” she said.
Butler, who is studying
physical therapy, said her college
experience had improved her
game.
“I have found the US
experience incredible so far- I
definitely can see myself living
ON THE MOVE:
Former Riccarton
High School
volleyballer, Carla
Butler (centre)
with her mother
Cecilia Butler, left
and sister, Kim,
has made a big
impression in her
first year in the
United States.
here after college.
“The volleyball over here is a
big change in game as it is a lot
faster and such big competition,”
she said.
“I have seen so many
incredible athletes compete at
such a high level in which I am
striving for,” Butler said.
NZ call-up for Villa duo
BIG STEP: Villa Maria duo Georgia Stroud (left) and Olivia
Burnham have been selected for the New Zealand secondary
school netball team.
VILLA MARIA has two
netballers in the New Zealand
secondary schools team, which
will take on several international
teams in October.
Mid-courter Georgia Stroud,
17, and defender Olivia Burnham,
17, have been selected for the
14-strong squad, confirmed by
Netball New Zealand, and will
travel to Canberra in October to
play the Australian under-17 and
England under-17 teams.
The duo are the only South
Islanders to make the cut.
Georgia’s mother is Helen
Mahon-Stroud, who played
rugby for the Black Ferns, as well
as provincial level netball. Her
father, Alan Stroud, is a former
All White goalkeeper.
“I am still pinching myself
that I have made the team, it’s an
enormous honour, and just goes
to show that hard work pays off,”
said Georgia, who year 13.
“My parents have taught me
to do as much as I can, and I’m
also a runner and a surf lifesaver.
I think fitness is my point of difference
on the netball court.”
Olivia is equally as delighted
to be named on the team, and
is also a member of the Netball
Mainland Baby Beko squad,
along with Georgia.
The squad is the highest elite
franchise for Mainland secondary
school netballers.
“It’s a dream come true to be
able to represent New Zealand
for netball, a sport I have loved
my whole life,” said Olivia in
year 12.
“I also train and compete
in athletics in the pathway to
podium programme, which has
given me additional strength
that supports my netball game.”
“This is an enormous achievement
for the girls, who work
hard both on and off the netball
court to be at the top of their
game,” said Deborah Brosnahan,
Villa Maria principal.
“We have the only two players
and we couldn’t be more proud.”
FREE digital media course, with NCEA built in
ADVERTORIAL
For those looking for a role that combines
artistic and digital talents, then this outstanding,
FREE, entry level course has just been announced
by local Training Provider Trainme, for those
wishing to pursue animation, graphic design,
photography or digital media as a career.
The course covers introduction to multi-media
techniques such as video production, drawing,
animation and photography. Students will create
their own design concepts and collaborate with
other students on creative projects.
This course is FREE to students aged 16 to 19
and they only have to have NCEA 1 to join.
Students without NCEA 1 can be admitted, if they
show artistic or digital aptitude.
“Many feel that school is not working for them
or they left without qualifications,” says Gary
Taylor, Campus Manager with tertiary educator
Trainme. “While not necessarily academically
minded, they do have artistic talents and are very
much into digital technology.”
“This FREE six-month Trainme course, combines
these in a very hands-on, practical way, giving
them an intro into various digital media. This way,
they can decide which direction to pursue as their
career focus.”
“As an NZQA approved programme, NCEA
credits are built in, so if they apply themselves, they
can graduate with a New Zealand Certificate in Arts
and Design Level 2, as well as gaining credits
towards NCEA level 1 or 2.” Says Taylor.
“NCEA results will depend on how many credit
they bring to the course to start with, but as it’s a fun
subject, it won’t feel like school at all.”
Successful Graduates from this programme could
pathway into higher study in media arts, which could
include graphic design, video production,
photography or one of the many emerging digitalbased
careers. Places are limited, so students are
encouraged to apply as soon as they can.
Small co-ed classes at St Michael’s
Is your child one of 15 or 50? Is their
classroom calm and productive
or a disharmony of noise and
movement? How much of their
teacher’s attention does your child
actually receive?
At St Michael’s, our small co-ed classes
and specialist teachers ensure your child is
an individual, well known by staff and fellow
pupils alike. For at the heart of St Michael’s
are the essential values of Christian faith
and good citizenship: respect, integrity,
faith, hope and love.
St Michael’s is a prep school so your
child is assured of a traditional foundation
in English and Mathematics. This
academic rigour then underpins our wider
curriculums in Science, History, Geography
and Spanish. IT literacy is taught, not
assumed, and computer use is measured.
We like teaching and talking to our pupils!
Cultural and sports’ programmes
develop your child’s foundation further,
as creativity and problem-solving come
in many forms. Specialist art and music
classes are enjoyed weekly; and most pupils
play at least one instrument, whether piano
or flute, bassoon or bongos. There are two
choirs, and drama lessons.
And our extended campus is spectacular:
today, the Art Gallery; tomorrow, the
Gardens; next week…
St Michael’s has been nurturing and
educating children for 167 years, and our
pupils come from city-wide, arriving via
the bus exchange only a block away or
with parents who work in the thriving city
centre.
You and your child are warmly welcome
to discover for yourselves our purposeful,
wholehearted and inclusive prep school.
WESTERN NEWS
Cathedral Grammar
The Cathedral Grammar School is an
independent school providing high-quality
education for pre-school, primary school
and intermediate aged girls and boys.
This is a place of ambition alongside
preparation where students learn from the
best right from the start. Every year level
benefits from the expertise of our highcalibre
specialist teachers across multiple
subjects. And small class sizes means a
lot of individual attention so every child’s
strengths are identified and built on and
support provided where and when needed.
Our school structure is unique and
designed to ensure students have the
opportunity to make the most of their
formative school years. We understand
learning happens in different ways at
different ages; our students work in both
co-educational and single-sex learning
environments at times when this best suits
their learning styles. In Pre-School and
the Junior School children learn in a coeducational
environment. Students in Years
4 to 8 attend either our Boys’ or Girls’ School.
Allowing students the best of both worlds,
single sex classes offer the opportunity to
target and deliver the curriculum in the
most effective and interesting style possible,
while social skills are developed by sharing
mixed-environment break times, specialist
classes and activities.
Creativity and culture play a
big role here with four choirs and
hundreds of individual music,
speech and drama lessons every
week. We’re also a proud sporting
school, providing students with
the facilities and encouragement
to try their hand at a range of
sports and recreation activities.
Ultimately, we are committed
to providing a balance of
tradition and rigour, while being
curious and adventurous every
day.
SCHOOL OPTIONS - early & middle years 2019
Middle schooling
makes a difference
Having a curriculum and learning
environment designed specifically for
learners in the “middle years” (Years 7-10) is
essential to ensure high levels of motivation
and engagement in learning during this
crucial stage of schooling.
At Hillmorton High School having a
consistent approach without a transition
to a new school between Year 8 and 9 is
proving to be positive in terms of
accelerating student learning within
the Middle School.
We are currently working with
our architects designing a new
Middle School building with 22
“General Learning Areas”. These
areas are flexible and can operate as
single cell classrooms or be opened
up to allow more open learning
spaces – the best of both worlds.
This building will not disrupt
learning as it is being built on the
current tennis courts.
This environment fits well
with our broad Middle School
curriculum allowing learners to
explore and find both their strengths
and passions.
The advantage of combining
the skills of Year 7 and 8 specialist
teachers with the subject specialists
of a high school gives our Middle
School learners a huge advantage.
Additionally, our “Big Day Out”
events and end of year student
electives allow our young people to learn in
a range of environments often participating
in social action such as planting, working
with the elderly, along with exploring the
city, the Art Gallery and the university.
Our Middle School is ensuring real
educational success and positive future
prospects as students move into the Senior
School for Years 11-13.
Providing
our students
with learning
and personal
growth
opportunities
At St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School,
our mission is that we are “choosing
to be an innovative, catholic learning
community that inspires and empowers
learners to succeed.”
We are committed to inspiring and
empowering students for success,
through the implementation of innovative
instructional practices, leveraging digital
technology, ensuring equity of access for
all.
We offer a range of sporting and cultural,
innovative and creative opportunities.
Teaching and learning experiences are
personalised for our students and value
student voice.
Within our new flexible learning spaces
every child has the opportunity to learn
through authentic contexts, solving real
world problems.
Together we continue to innovate within
a Catholic learning environment where all
learners are inspired to learn, create and
share. We are creating learners who will
not only be successful but will become
people who will positively impact on their
world.
Selwyn House School -
small class sizes and talented
teaching staff
For primary school, every parent wants
to ensure their child is receiving the best
foundation for their academic future.
Selwyn House School has small class sizes
and a talented teaching staff set within a
nurturing environment and an extensive
range of opportunities.
Selwyn House offers the International
Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years
Programme (PYP) and is proud to be a
leading STEAM focused school. We not only
encourage our girls to work in advanced
STEAM fields, we want our girls to lead
them. Our STEAM Hub provides every
student from Year 1 to 8 access to stateof-the-art
equipment. In Mechatronics,
girls learn the foundations of mechanical
and electrical knowledge. Robotics is
introduced as an interdisciplinary, projectbased
learning activity drawing mostly
on mathematics, science and technology.
Learning is also enhanced by additional
opportunities including the 2018 Space
Camp trip where 18 girls will travel to the
United States to attend a week-long Space
Camp.
A supportive all-girl learning
environment encourages girls to take
risks without fear of failure. As the girls
progress they are confident in their
abilities, understanding that perseverance
helps them grow. A school-wide buddy
programme provides each girl with support
and mentoring.
Learning is personalised and each
teacher has the time to foster authentic
and meaningful relationships. Strong
relationships between the class teacher and
family ensure each girl’s learning journey
is nurtured by a partnership of support.
Teachers construct learning activities
to help each girl identify their personal
strengths.
Selwyn House believes these strengths
can be applied to academic tasks
and become more powerful with the
acquisition of skills and knowledge, aiding
intellectual development and academic
achievement. For this reason core learning
in reading, writing and mathematics is
a priority. Specialist teachers in Spanish,
Mechatronics, Art, Science, Physical
Education, Swimming, Performing Arts
and Music work with classroom teachers to
help identify the strengths of every girl.
The environment at Selwyn House
empowers each girl to embrace their future
and develop a love of learning. A Selwyn
House girl will learn to define herself,
accept responsibility, form opinions,
and have compassion for the world. This
combination of achievement, confidence,
and character makes a Selwyn House
education a powerful and transformative
experience.
ON THE MOVE: St Thomas footballer Hamish Cooper is one of two Christchurch
United teenagers set to train with Sydney FC.
Cooper gets shot
with Sydney FC
ST THOMAS’ footballer
Hamish Cooper is one
of two Christchurch
United stars set to get
an invaluable taste of
professional football at
Sydney FC, the glamour
club in the A-League.
Cooper and St Andrew’s
player Riley Caswell,
who both just turned 17
but already play for the
Christchurch United first
team, have been invited
to train with the Sydney
club. Sydney FC were last
season’s A-League minor
premiers and losing finalists
and won the A-league
in 2017.
The opportunity arose
through the contacts of
Christchurch United head
coach Fernando Lambert
who coached at Manly
United in Sydney for five
years. He also spent four
months as an apprentice
coach at Sydney FC with
Robert Stanton, who runs
the club’s first team and
young league side.
Lambert says that both
players have a big potential
and the Yaldhurst-based
Christchurch United
wants to give its players
the best opportunities to
develop.
“This may not be ideal
for our club as they will
miss a few games, but
our club is focused on
developing great players
for the future and for New
Zealand football, and not
just looking at short-term
results,” said Lambert.
“This trip to Sydney will
show our youngsters the
next level they need to be
aiming for and what is
required in a professional
environment.”
Caswell headed over on
Sunday to train with the
Sydney first team, which
is the feeder team for the
A-League squad and regularly
trains with the club’s
superstars.
The central defender
feels he has earned this
opportunity with his performances
in Christchurch
United’s first team.
“I’m definitely excited
and slightly nervous, but
I’m grateful to have the opportunity
to travel across
to Australia,” said Caswell.
“It is a great opportunity
to experience what football
is like in other countries
and to compete against top
players”
Cooper will go over the
following week to spend a
fortnight with the Sydney
FC Academy squad.
The right fullback is
grateful to Christchurch
United and coach Fernando
Lambert for giving
him first-team experience
at 16 and to open the doors
to overseas opportunities.
“The move to Christchurch
United had definitely
paid off because I am not
sure if I would have had
those opportunities at
my previous club,” says
Hamish who is pursuing a
career in football, as player
or coach.
“At Sydney FC, I want
to compare myself to the
other players my age in
Australia to see where I
need to improve,” said
Cooper.
Grape Seed Extract (GSE) has been shown
vital in the treatment of brain disorders like
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Numerous studies on GSE show it can
deficient in B12
Emerging research has shown as many as 50% of older adults and
as many as 25% of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12.
Scientists at Rush University Medical
Center found those most deficient
in vitamin B12 to have the smallest
brain mass and the lowest scores on
tests measuring short-term memory,
concentration and brain performance.
Another study showed that older people
with higher levels of B12 in their blood
have bigger, healthier brains and score
higher on cognitive tests than those with
lower levels. Yet another recent landmark
study showed that B12 supplementation
slows the accelerated rate of brain
shrinkage and declining cognitive function.
B12 is essential for energy production, cell
health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles,
nerve health and repair, and prevention
of homocysteine a serious cardiovascular
risk factor that is known to cause damage
and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also
increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard
researchers found
a 34% decrease
risk of vision
loss in a study
of participants
aged 40+ who
supplemented with
B12. Another study
linked a higher risk of hearing loss in
DIFFICULTY SLEEPING, PINS & NEEDLES, NUMBNESS IN LEGS
Up to 1 in 2 people may have a shrinking brain due to a lack of vitamin B12.
Supplementation of methylcobalamin B12 has been shown to reduce the rate of brain
shrinkage & support memory & brain function. B12 is also known to protect against
homocysteine a serious cardiovascular risk factor that can also damage the hearing,
eyesight & affect the mood. B12 is essential for energy, cell health & nerve function.
subjects in their 60’s who were low in B12.
The reason so many people lack B12
appears to be our body’s ability to absorb
it declining with age as the digestive
system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux
medication and other drugs further reduce
B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in
the form of Methylcobalamin sublingual
tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and
thru bypassing the digestive tract have
been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in
the body.
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide what
is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is
key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every
situation varies and it is therefore important
to get professional advice from heat pump
experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always
the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
WESTERN NEWS
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands vary
in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems
and price, so it depends on your application as
to which will be most suitable. Major brands
such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin,
Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands
backed up by good technical after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but also
validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
installation and servicing of all major brands
HOME & HEATING
Get rid of
dampness
in your house
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm and
healthy for their families throughout winter.
Rising damp is an issue that affects many of
our older properties which suffer from poor, or
no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake,
many people have relocated to homes
that suffer from rising damp which can be
associated with health problems. Independent
tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can
rise from the ground and enter a house every
day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation
and musty smells. Moulds can produce
various allergic reactions and the
frail, elderly and very young are
especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete
Ltd is a locally owned and
operated firm. The team
understands the problems
caused by rising damp and are
there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump
a lightweight, flowable foam
concrete under your timber
floored home. Specially adapted
for our New Zealand conditions and
applications it provides a layer of protection
against rising moisture. An unexpected
benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam
Concrete have noticed recently, is that many
owners of properties which had underfloor
foam concrete installed, reported that it also
provided protection against liquefaction after
the earthquakes.
Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd
now for your free, no obligation quote and
complimentary appraisal of your underfloor
ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or
THAT’S right folks! DND Showband returns
to the Hornby Club this Saturday with the
original line up.
“We’ve had a lot of fun putting this show
together, ”said Jo-Anne Davern, performer
and manager of the band. “It’s been a good
couple of years since this line up last
performed together and I’m amazed at how
simply we all slotted back in place. It’s like
we were never apart.”
Joining Jo on stage will be regular
members Ben Harvey (guitar, vocals); Grant
McPhie (bass, keys); and Mark Newburn
(drums, vocals), along with showband
chanteuses Michele Webb, Gina Gilbreath,
and Mel Lawson.
Christchurch based DnD Showband has
been delighting audiences across the
country with their multi-tribute theme
shows for an incredible ten years. In
rehearsal mode for Saturday’s show, the 7
piece troupe has been busy fine tuning show
content, sorting costumes and tightening up
moves.
“We’ve put together a great play list
guaranteed to get everyone up dancing.
We’re opening with a set of 50s/60s tunes,
followed by our Moulin Rouge theme set
that brims with disco dance anthems of the
70s/80s, and concluding with our tribute to
ABBA,” said Jo. “And for those who prefer to
listen and watch, our professional tech’s
Peter Standring and Peter ‘Pedro’ Buchan-Ng
will be out front running our audio and
light systems to ensure it sounds and looks
wonderful.”
