CHAMPS: Darfield High School took out Christchurch Showquest at Horncastle Arena last week. It was the third regional event 

in New Zealand’s new music, dance and drama showcase for schools. Darfield High students choose to theme their performance 

on gun violence in schools in the United States. This theme was chosen as they felt inspired by students of the same 

age who had experienced it first-hand. The group spent seven weeks practising their performance before the regional contest. 

For Jemma Dalley, one of the student captains for the Darfield High entry, the goal was to safely and conscientiously put across 

the theme, while making their school and themselves proud. “That we’ve won is so awesome, and just puts the cherry on top 

really,” said the 16-year-old. A national online final will name the top entry nationwide in September.

SELWYN’S biggest community 

facility project ever could get the 

green light today. 

The district council will consider 

signing off two major projects 

worth about $37 million, 

in its largest community facility 

expenditure to date. 

It is looking at extending the 

Selwyn Aquatic Centre and approving 

the design concepts for 

the new Rolleston Library and 

Community Centre. 

Selwyn’s population is forecast 

to grow from about 60,000 today 

to 80,000 by 2028. 

The two projects were proposed 

in the Long Term Plan 

2018 -2028 and previous annual 

plans.

said the projects are key 

developments in meeting the 

increasing needs of the district, 

as its population continues to 

grow. 

“This is a substantial investment 

in the district which 

ensures that two important 

facilities meet the future needs

DRIVE BETWEEN Rolleston and Lincoln 

and you’ll see what is happening: A 

housing boom. 

Some might say Rolleston and Lincoln 

will one day be almost one, separated only 

by Shands Rd. The merits of that are debatable. 

But it’s a reality, which the district council is having to 

address (see page 1). 

Two very big projects are due for council sign off to cope with 

the growing population. The Selwyn of today will be vastly different 

to Selwyn in 10 years. 

But the council also needs to think of the little guy. Like the 

long suffering residents of West Belt in Lincoln. The road is still 

in appalling condition, and at least one resident has been spotted 

filling in the pot holes himself.

calls for stop sign at Waddington

intersection.

pleas to have a stop sign 

installed at

its highway maintenance team 

will be providing a report on 

conditions at the Waddington 

intersection at the time of the 

crash. 

It will also look at other factors 

which may have contributed 

related to road, weather or signage 

conditions. 

Mr Scarlet said a stop sign 

is normally used where there 

is limited visibility and this 

intersection had good visibility 

in both directions. 

SAFETY: Senior Sergeant Pete Stills wants a stop sign at the 

State Highway 73 and Waimakariri Gorge Rd intersection. 

He said a give way sign still 

appears to be the most appropriate 

tool to use. 

In July, NZTA told Selwyn 

Times it would not install a stop 

sign at the intersection. 

But Senior Sergeant Stills said 

forcing motorists to stop should 

increase their ability to have a 

proper look in both directions. 

“If we don’t try something different 

we will keep getting what 

we get now,” he said. 

INTERNATIONAL 

It comes after four people were 

lucky not to be seriously injured 

when a car was hit in the rear by 

a truck on State Highway 73. 

The incident happened on 

Friday, July 27, at 1pm. 

Senior Sergeant Stills said 

two rental cars and a truck were 

involved. The first car pulled out 

from the Waimakariri Gorge 

Rd causing the truck to brake 

heavily. 

The second vehicle followed

and was hit in the rear by the 

truck. No injuries were sustained, 

but Senior Sergeant Stills 

said the four occupants in the 

second vehicle were very lucky. 

“Had they been hit 1m further 

forward on the vehicle they 

would have had potentially serious 

issues,” he said. 

Already two serious crashes 

have been recorded at the intersection 

this year, one fatal. 

Three other crashes that resulted 

in both serious and minor 

injuries were recorded at the 

intersection between 2014-2016. 

Senior Sergeant Stills said a 

feature in several crashes at this 

intersection has been a second 

vehicle following another vehicle 

through the give way without 

having checked that the way is 

clear. 

He also considers it a suitable 

intersection for a 70km/h flashing 

sign on State Highway 73.

GORGE BRIDGE UPDATE 

Work to repair the Rakaia Gorge 

Bridge on State Highway 77 is 

progressing well. The New Zealand 

Transport Agency is replacing 

the bridge’s timber deck system, 

refurbishing the handrail and 

carrying out seismic strengthening 

and minor improvements. Day 

shift work is being carried out 

from Monday to Friday. While this 

work is taking place the bridge is 

open to traffic for 10 out of out of 

every 30min. In order to minimise 

delays and help people plan their 

journeys, the 10min openings 

will be scheduled on the hour and 

on the half hour. For the latest

HALL HANDED OVER 

The Sheffield Community Hall 

Incorporated Society has been 

formed to hand over hall ownership 

to the district council. The 

ownership was legally handed over 

from the Sheffield community so 

that seismic strengthening can get 

under way. Selwyn Times previously 

reported the district council 

has assured residents if it was to 

ever sell the building, it would be 

offered back to the community

COURTNEY FORREST has 

proven to be a popular man in 

Selwyn. 

The Rolleston youth worker 

was awarded the inaugural People’s 

Choice honour at the 2018 

Selwyn Awards on Saturday 

night. 

The award was voted on by 

Selwyn residents. 

Nearly 2400 votes were cast 

for the People’s Choice Award, 

which was introduced for the 

first time this year. 

First runner-up for the 

People’s Choice Award went to 

Quickenberry Guesthouse and 

second runner-up to after school 

programme Busy Bumbles. 

Mr Forrest was one of 10 

Selwyn businesses, groups and 

individuals who were recognised 

for their excellence at the Selwyn 

Awards Gala Dinner, held at the 

Lincoln Event Centre. 

Selwyn Times profiled Mr 

Forrest, of Hope Presbyterian 

Church earlier this year. 

He talked about helping young 

people living in Rolleston who 

do not have strong role models 

and how his parent’s separation 

when he was younger has helped 

him relate to other people going 

through difficult times. 

More than 330 people celebrated 

the success of the region 

at the event, which also featured 

a range of entertainment, food 

and beverages originating from 

Selwyn. 

Mayor Sam Broughton said it 

was to see the community supporting 

local people working for 

the good of Selwyn. 

“We have so many amazing 

people in Selwyn giving up 

their time to help others, building

support our district’s economy, 

and working to improve our

The Rolleston Library and 

Community Centre will be the 

focal point of the new town 

centre, to be developed in the 

vicinity of Rolleston Reserve and 

Tennyson St. 

The facility will provide a 

usable area of 2256m 2 over two 

storeys, and the space will be 

flexible and adaptive, allowing it 

to suit a range of needs. 

It will feature meeting spaces, 

current and future library collections 

spaces, performance, 

exhibition, display areas, children’s 

spaces and research and 

historical spaces. 

Construction on the $22.2 

million project is set to start in 

April next year, with handover 

pencilled in for July 2020. 

The district council’s recent 

Long Term Plan 2018-2028 

includes a proposal for an additional 

eight-lane, 25m pool at 

Selwyn Aquatic Centre to meet 

rapidly increasing demand for 

additional capacity. 

It is now considering a larger 

proposal, for a new 10-lane, 25m 

main pool, along with reconfiguration 

of the existing pool. 

The new pool would have a 

depth range of 1.4 to 2m, and 

the 10-lane layout provides flexibility 

for deep water sports and 

other activities.

Firefighters 

rescue cat 


A CAT has had a lucky escape 

after it became wedged between a 

block wall and fence. 

The Rolleston Volunteer Fire 

Brigade was called out to one of 

their more “trickier” rescues to 

free the animal. 

The brigade was alerted at 

about 10am on Sunday morning 

by a property owner on Andesite 

Drive in Rolleston who heard the 

screaming of the cat. 

Senior firefighter Cam Kenyon 

said it was trickier to rescue than 

normal, as most cats the fire 

brigade are called out to are normally 

up trees or power poles. 

The fire brigade was required 

to wedge the fence away from the 

block wall with a crowbar to free 

the cat. 

He said the cat, named Lola, 

was frightened and ran away to its 

owner’s house on Andesite Drive 

when it was freed. 


A GLENTUNNEL resident 

fighting permanent chlorination 

in parts of Malvern has been 

asked to pay for further 

information he seeks on the 

issue. 

The district council has told 

retired farmer Brian Thompson 

it is estimated he will have to 

pay $608 for it to carry out 

three Local Government Official

and Meetings 

Act requests 

he made

28 and July 1.

Because the first hour of preparing

to have a better understanding 

of the history and risks in the 

water scheme.

has lodged 25 requests on 

the chlorination. 

It has not charged Mr Thompson 

previously. 

“We have been very cooperative 

in working with Brian 

with his requests,” he said. 

Recent requests were for a list 

of original ratepayers who were 

members of the Malvern Hills 

Water Scheme, a copy of all 

contamination breaches of the 

Hartleys Rd scheme in the past 

three years and records of illegal 

connections to the scheme. 

Mayor Sam Broughton suggested 

the Malvern Community 

Board looks at using their discretionary 

funds to support the 

requests. 

But Mr Thompson said it 

didn’t “rest well” with him and 

the money was supposed to be 

for the community. 

The district council confirmed 

it permanently chlorinated the 

Sheffield-Waddington water supplies 

in June and the Malvern 

Hills Hartleys Road supplies this 

month and the next. 

District council asset manager 

Murray Washington said 

answering these requests has a 

significant cost to staff in terms 

of time being taken away from 

core tasks, as well as to the 

ratepayer. 

He said the district council 

works to be as open as possible 

and does not stand in the way of 

releasing information to ratepayers 

and stakeholders.

Charging Guidelines for Official 

Information Act 1982 Requests, 

if information can be gathered 

within an hour there cannot be 

a charge, while up to 20 pages of 

photocopying is also free.

makes top-10 at 

Miss Universe NZ 

ROLLESTON resident 

Abigail Curd was named a 

top-10 finalist in Saturday’s 

Miss Universe New 

Zealand contest. 

The 19- year- old was one 

of 20 contestants to be 

selected for the finals held 

at Auckland’s Sky City. 

In a post online, Miss 

Curd said she was proud 

to have been one of the 

top-10 finalists in the 

country. 

“For a girl who has 

never entered anything 

like this before or any real 

competition for that matter 

I couldn’t be happier 

with last nights results,” 

she said. 

Estelle Curd, of Wellington 

was crowned the 

top prize and will go on 

to represent New Zealand 

in the international Miss 

Universe competition in 

America. 

Miss Curd has been 

modelling for about six 

years and says her reasons

Young families embrace Selwyn as 

Beth and Chris Sharpe are among the growing number of young 

families living in the district. Emily O’Connell reports

FOR THE Sharpe family, it was 

Chris’ work which led them to 

move to the district in December 

2014. 

But according to his wife, Beth, 

it’s also the perfect place to raise 

children. 

“The lifestyle here is nice 

because the pace of life is a lot 

slower which is really nice with a 

family,” she said. 

They are among a growing 

number of young families 

living in Selwyn. The district 

council’s Long Term Plan predicts 

55 per cent of the population 

will be aged under 39-yearsold 

in 2028. 

The Sharpe family moved to 

Selwyn as Chris’ job with Trustpower 

had been transferred from 

Dunedin to Lake Coleridge. He 

works as a technical team leader 

at the Coleridge hydroelectric 

generation scheme. 

When the family of four first 

moved to the district, they settled 

in Kirwee. 

But less than a year later the 

Sharpes moved to Darfield after 

finding a suitable house. 

“Darfield has a really nice 

community as well [as Kirwee] 

and we managed to find a house 

there,” Mrs Sharpe said. 

At 37 and 33-years-old, Mr and 

Mrs Sharpe help make up 34 per 

cent of the district’s population 

who are aged between 15 and 

39-years-old. 

Mrs Sharpe says in the almost 

four years they’ve lived in 

Selwyn, she’s seen an increase 

in young families living in the 

area. 

“There definitely are a lot more 

families, I’ve noticed more families 

at more things,” she said. 

The district has 30 primary 

and secondary schools which are 

helping accommodate for the 

growing number of children and 

teenagers. 

District council community relations 

manager Denise Kidd said 

it understands the population 

has changed and it has worked 

to provide key assets to the community. 

“Like the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, 

community and event centres, 

libraries which also host a 

range of events, sporting grounds 

and dozens of playgrounds 

around Selwyn featuring a range 

of interactive play areas,” she 

said. 

Ms Kidd said it also works to 

provide programmes such as 

KidsFest, Boost and CultureFest 

as ways to engage the 

community and provide entertainment 

for a wide range of local 

residents. 

“Through engagement 

and consultation we also 

work to investigate whether 

current facilities meet the 

needs of our ever changing and 

developing communities,” she 

said. 

Mrs Sharpe said the 

district has good facilities and 

her children, Tim, 7, and Andrew, 

4, attend library story 

times and community gymnastics. 

“If anything, I would say there 

are too many options which is 

funny because you’d think living 

rurally that there wouldn’t be 

enough choices for things to do 

with kids,” she said.

Mrs Sharpe said their 

favourite thing to do as a 

family is visit McHugh’s 

Plantation. 

“It’s so close and you can just 

go and feel like you’re miles 

away from everything and it’s 

walking distance from our 

home,” she said. 

Data from the 2013 census 

shows an increase in young 

parents moving to the district 

over an 11-year period. 

In 2001 there were 120 

parents aged under 25-yearsold 

living in Selwyn. This 

increased to 237 by 2013. 

Similiarly, in 2001 there were 

1674 parents aged between 

25-years-old and 34-years-old 

living in the district. This 

increased to 1986 by 2013. 

In 2015 the district 

council adopted its 

Newcomers and Migrants 

Strategy after conducting 

research and working with a 

mixture of key community 

groups and agencies within the 

district. 

The strategy sets the 

direction and aims to address 

the needs of people new to the 

district so that they can settle 

well and call Selwyn their 

home. 

SWIM: The Selwyn Aquatic Centre is just one of 

the facilities the district has on offer for young 

families. 

FAST FACTS 

•About 59,000 people currently live in the 

district. This is expected to grow to 79,200 by 

2028. 

•The district’s largest township is Rolleston, 

with 17,348 people. In ten years, it’s expected 

26,472 people will reside in Rolleston. 

•In 2028, there will be 29,584 households 

in Selwyn, about 8000 more than there is 

currently. 

•34.3 per cent of the district’s population is

LINCOLN’S BEX Barrett has 

one birthday wish this year – to 

help people. 

So in a bid to do just that, 

she’s organised a variety night to 

raise funds for the New Zealand 

Breast Cancer Foundation. 

In 2008, Mrs Barrett’s father, 

Robert Dollery, died from breast 

cancer. 

“He actually had lung cancer 

but it was secondary from a 

strange cancer that originated 

in the breast that normally 

pregnant woman have,” she 

said. 

Mrs Barrett says she chose 

the breast cancer foundation 

because of the amazing work 

they do. 

“It’s just touched so much of 

my life it just seemed like the 

perfect charity to raise money 

for and so I decided I would do a 

fundraiser,” she said. 

The event will be held on Mrs 

Barrett’s birthday, September 1, 

at the Lincoln Event Centre. 

Friends and bandmates have 

helped her organise the night, 

which will feature a number of 

acts including TribalDiva Belly 

Dance Company, burlesque 

performer and comic Ashleigh 

Blair, ballroom and latin dance 

phenomenon Saphire and Steel, 

musicians Southfield, jazz singer 

Georgia Catherine, Fan Dancers 

and her own band, Hypnumb. 

The master of ceremonies 

for the night will be Nathan 

Bonner or as he’s better known, 

MulletMan. Mrs Barrett says he 

will help bring the whole show 

together. 

“I think he’s incredibly talented 

in his act, so he does a lot 

of circus type acts, but he’s also 

really, really funny and a really 

lovely guy,” she said. 

Mrs Barrett says the event will 

be “a great night out in Lincoln.” 

“If we can sell 200 tickets . . . 

then we should be giving at least 

over $4000 to the foundation 

which would be lovely,” she said. 

Doors will open at 6.30pm, 

with the show starting at 7pm.

Light-fingered cat on the prowl

MUCH LIKE Lynley Dodd’s 

Slinky Malinki, cat Duncan, 

from Rolleston, has been 

helping himself to his 

neighbours’ soft toys. 

Owner Diane Guthrie says 

Duncan’s habits are “a bit 

embarrassing” but she’s pleased 

their neighbours are good 

about it. 

“He likes to collect things. 

He’s not a really cuddly cat, he 

kind of does his own thing but 

he’s very social,” she said. 

Mrs Guthrie says Duncan, 

aged 18-months, particularly 

likes to steal dog toys from 

Charlie, the golden retriever 

which lives across the road. 

“He takes all his toys . . . he 

just brings them home and 

leaves them,” she said. 

Duncan also likes adventuring 

to a nearby outdoor gym, 

where Mrs Guthrie says he has 

brought home hats, a sock and 

a child’s headband. 

After posting numerous pictures 

of Duncan’s stolen goods 

on the Rolleston Community 

Page on Facebook, Mrs Guthrie 

decided to create a separate 

page for his mischievous acts. 

A few weeks and 600 or so 

likes later, Duncan’s adventures 

are proving popular on Facebook. 

But stealing isn’t the only 

thing Duncan gets up to, Mrs 

Guthrie says he also likes to 

make himself at home in neighbouring 

houses. 

“He upset one neighbour because 

in the summer he would 

leave his window open and he 

woke up one morning, well in 

the early hours, and our cat was 

sleeping at the end of his bed,” 

she said. 

Mrs Guthrie says Duncan 

isn’t bothered if there are other 

animals residing in the neighbouring 

houses when he visits 

and at times, he even tucks into 

their food bowls.

Bridge gets 

second fix 


A BRIDGE in Coalgate will 

be sealed this summer after 

complaints recent repairs made 

the surface worst. 

The Coalgate Township Committee 

is unhappy about repairs 

the New Zealand Transport 

Agency has done on the bridge, 

saying it has “made the bridge 

worse,” a Malvern Community 

Board report said. 

NZTA repaired the bridge in 

June after the deck joints had 

deteriorated and were no longer 

functioning correctly. 

It was resealed at the same 

time costing about $300,000. 

District councillor Bob Mugford 

said the bridge was brought 

up at a recent committee meeting 

while it was discussing the 

general quality of the roads. 

He said it appeared while the 

joins on the bridge had been 

repaired, they are raised causing 

a series of bumps on the bridge, 

“It is definitely bumpier than it 

used to be,” he said. 

Cr Mugford said he took the 

issue to the district council, who 

have since followed up with 

NZTA. 

The bridge was built in 1939.

Dame Patsy visits Selwyn 

GOVERNOR-GENERAL Dame 

Patsy Reddy and husband Sir 

David Gascoigne visited the 

district on Wednesday. 

They were taken on a tour of 

key sites about Te Waihora/Lake 

Ellesmere, starting at Ngāti Moki 

Marae at Taumutu and finishing 

at Lincoln University’s Ashley 

Dene Research and Development 

Station. 

Environment Canterbury 

councillor Tom Lambie said the 

visit represented an excellent 

opportunity to showcase all 

the good work happening on 

the ground around the lake, 

and research activity at the 

university. 

“Their Excellencies saw Te 

Waihora first hand and the work 

being done to restore the mauri 

of the lake,” Mr Lambie said. 

“There was a presentation 

by one of the Ngāi Tahu Co- 

Governors, Liz Brown, who gave 

an overview of Te Waihora and 

the catchment in terms of the 

vision for the lake and plans for 

restoration of its mauri.” 

This was followed by a stop at 

Orariki Wetland, a two-yearold 

created wetland designed 

to improve water quality, 

biodiversity and mahinga kai. 

Further on, at Lower Lake Rd 

near Fisherman’s Point, there 

was discussion about farming 

within the Cultural Landscape 

Values Management Area, a 

particularly sensitive area near 

the lake. 

Hart’s Creek, a well-known 

restoration site contributed to 

by many farmers and other 

community members for more 

than a decade, was the final 

stopping point before Lincoln 

University. 

At the Ashley Dene Research 

and Development Station, they 

heard a series of presentations on 

communities working together 

for better water outcomes and 

innovation for the agriculture, 

tourism and conservation 

sectors, with particular emphasis

Selwyn quarry 

A SELWYN company has won 

a top award at a national annual 

quarry industry awards. 

Southern Screenworks, based 

in Aylesbury near Darfield, won 

the Gold Award at the MIMICO 

Environment and Community 

Awards recently. 

Judge and former 

parliamentary commissioner 

for the environment Dr Morgan 

Williams said the company 

overcame many challenges in 

constructing, operating and 

decommissioning a quarry at 

Ohinemama, near Waitangi. 

It was to provide more than 

100,000 cu m of materials to build 

the new $52 million wharf for the 

Chatham Islands. 

“They were working 800km 

from mainland New Zealand 

and their success was highly 

dependent on community 

relations – given it was a 

single project quarry.” 

After the wharf was completed, 

the Ohinemama quarry was fully 

restored to farmland. 

The other Canterbury 

winner was Fulton Hogan for 

growing and saving endangered 

indigenous plants with multiple 

partners. It won a silver award.

Springston School prepares to celebrate 

OCTOBER WILL mark 

Springston School’s 150th 

anniversary. 

On May 22, 1868, a group 

of local landowners and 

householders declared 

themselves willing to form the 

Springston Education District 

and later that year the first 

school room and schoolhouse 

was built on Ellesmere Junction 

Rd, with James Gammock 

donating the land. 

The school was built in two 

and a half months and cost 

£242. The opening ceremony 

was held on the October 30, 

1868, and the school started 

with a roll of 25. 

A playground was provided 

across the road in one of 

Gammock’s paddocks and this 

was where the boys were able to 

play while the girls had to stay in 

the school grounds. 

In the early days, attendance 

grew and by the 1880s there were 

186 children on the roll. 

However, the average daily 

attendance was only 89 – which 

was less than half the roll. This 

was due to the children often 

being needed to help out at home 

as well as the education fees 

which many families could not 

afford to pay. 

CELEBRATION: Springston School almost 150 years on from when it first opened its doors. 

The school continued to 

grow and extra rooms were 

added in 1878 and 1886 but 

by 1920 the building was a 

little worst for wear and the 

school committee wrote to the 

education board asking them 

to buy a larger section because 

the school was old and past 

repair – little did they know they 

would have to wait another 36 

years. 

Electricity came to 

Springston in 1922 but it was 

not until 1947 when the old 

school was wired up. It was at 

this time the school roll had 

dropped back to 25 and the 

school returned to being a 

single-teacher school. 

Finally in 1956 the 

construction of new buildings 

on the present site on Leeston 

Rd revitalised the school and 

the old school was pulled 

down. 

The community decided to 

mark the occasion by 

also building a swimming 

pool. 

The full cost was raised by 

donations and pool was ready 

for use in less than a month. 

The pool has been a treasured 

asset and over the years has 

been retained for the good 

of Springston School and 

community, whereas many 

other pools have not been so 

lucky.

150 years 

A long association with 

country life continues today 

with many students involved in 

the agriculture club. Originally 

called the calf club it was noted 

the rivalry between herds of the 

district for the premier award led 

to fierce competition and it was 

questioned how much the young 

owners had in the selection, feeding 

and grooming of their calves. 

Today the school has a roll of 

237, made up of 10 classes which 

include collaborative learning 

spaces, integrated technology, 

well-resourced library, a community 

garden and a large outdoor 

learning centre. The focus of the 

school is still very much connected 

to the community and 

local families. 

To celebrate its jubilee, the 

school is having a weekend full 

of events on October 19 to 21. 

Former pupils, teachers, board of 

trustees, community members 

and current school families are 

welcome to attend.

Your rates 2018/19 

What’s changed? 

Selwyn ratepayers will be receiving their first rates notices for the 2018/19 year by post or email 

about now – and will notice a few things have changed. 

The rates were set by the Council after consultation on the Long-Term Plan, which set out the 

major projects for the next 10 years, along with the expected costs. Nearly 1,800 people provided 

feedback on the Plan, either through formal submissions or online feedback. 

Overall, the average Selwyn rate increase per ratepayer is 6%, reflecting the investment in 

landmark district projects including roading improvements, the Selwyn Aquatic Centre extension 

and the new Rolleston Library and Community Centre. Actual increases for individual ratepayers 

will vary based on location, property type and the services received, and may be higher or lower 

than the average. 

The biggest change is the introduction of standard district-wide rates for community centres 

and reserves. This means everyone will now pay towards the cost of these facilities and everyone 

will pay the same amount. The big advantage of this change is that it will provide the funding to 

allow us to provide a network of quality facilities across Selwyn that best meet the needs of 

our community. 

Another change is that all ratepayers will now contribute to the cost of the water race network. 

This recognises that water races don’t just provide stock water, but also contribute to Selwyn’s 

environment and biodiversity, the aesthetics of our townships and the district’s rural heritage. 

In addition there are increases in the General Rate (the part of the bill based on the capital value 

of the property), water rates and the stormwater rate. The $60 previously collected for additional 

transportation costs has been stopped and is now collected through the General Rate.

Good living, great value 

Nobody loves getting their rates bill, but rates are an important way that the Council helps fund 

the essentials that keep Selwyn thriving. A typical residential property in one of the districts larger 

townships might pay around $3,000 a year in Selwyn rates – that’s roughly equivalent to the cost 

of a cup of coffee and a sandwich a day. But rates are working for everybody 24/7, providing great 

value for the services that all Selwyn residents enjoy, like … 

1,000 litres of water supplied for $1.10 

a day 

Wastewater flushed away for $1.50 

a day 

Rubbish, recycling and green waste 

collected and processed for $1.25 a day

TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE – 

AUCHENFLOWER ROAD AND MALVERN 

HILLS ROAD 

On Sunday 19 August, with the Coalgate Sprint 

motorsport event taking place there will be a 

number of road closures around Malvern Hills. 

Auchenflower Road between the Deans Road 

Intersection, west to Malvern Hills Road. Malvern 

Hills Road 100 metres north of the Auchenflower 

Road intersection, and approximately six 

kilometres south of the Auchenflower intersection 

towards Homebush Road. The roads closures will 

be between 8.30am and 5.30pm. 

During the road closure, traffic will be requested 

to detour along the nearest alternative route.

A Rolleston youth worker has taken out the inaugural People’s 

Choice honour at the 2018 Selwyn Awards. 

Courtney Forrest, from the Youth South West Trust (Hope Trust), 

won the award which was voted on by Selwyn residents. 

He was one of 10 Selwyn businesses, groups and individuals 

who were recognised for their excellence at the Selwyn Awards 

Gala Dinner, held at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday 4 August. 

More than 330 people celebrated the success of the region at 

the event, which also featured a range of entertainment, food 

and beverages originating from Selwyn. 

Nearly 2,400 votes were cast for the People’s Choice Award, 

which was introduced for the first time this year. Mayor Sam 

Broughton says it’s great to see the community supporting local 

people working for the good of Selwyn. 

“We have so many amazing people in Selwyn giving up their 

time to help others, building thriving businesses which support 

our district’s economy, and working to improve our environment 

and community wellbeing,” he says. 

“I am very proud of all our winners, as well as the other runners 

up and nominees – it just shows what a wealth of talent and 

creativity we have in Selwyn.”

Chairman going out with a bang 

Jens Christensen, who is the 

chairman of the committee, 

which organises 

the annual 

Rolleston 

fireworks night, 

writes about 

how it started 

and why he’s 

stepping down from his role. 

SOME 35 years ago the original 

Rolleston fireworks night was 

hatched by a group of Rolleston 

identities and stalwarts of the 

time. 

Local residents and the district 

council over the preceding year 

brought their tree and hedge cuttings 

to the old league ground for 

the Guy Fawkes bonfire. 

The rugby league ground was 

in the vicinity of the district 

council headquarters. 

The format over the years 

was for the locals to bring their 

private fireworks down to the 

league fields and elders and 

members of the volunteer fire 

brigade would let the fireworks 

off on bits of 4x2 timber and 

planks while enjoying the bonfire. 

It sure was a true family evening. 

Twenty years ago, Ken Shearer 

and I got our heads together 

and in conjunction with the 

Rolleston Residents Association 

Committee and the Rolleston 

Reserve Management Committee 

thought it would be a good 

idea to introduce a professional 

operator with some bigger fireworks. 

The Yellow Pages introduced 

us to Paul Collins of Fireworks 

International and he has been 

with us every year since. 

The cost that year for fireworks 

was $2000 and while Ken and I 

Valuable informed 

underwrote the costs, fundraising 

on the night meant that the 

underwrite was never needed. 

Every year since we have managed 

to extend the fireworks 

spend and then a bigger venue 

when we moved to Rolleston 

Reserve and then two years ago 

the move to the bigger, better 

Foster Park. 

Bigger for the crowd to spread 

out and a bigger safety area 

for the operator to fire bigger 

brighter mortar shells.

The fireworks spend is now 

$30,000 and with 2.5km of 

security fencing, 36 security 

guards, 30 portable toilets, sound 

systems and the like. 

The night costs in the vicinity 

of $65,000 to run. 

Our income is $15,000 from 

Pub Charity Ltd, $5000 from the 

district council and the bulk of 

the balance through gate donations. 

The gate donations are all important 

to balance the books as 

the organising committee consists 

of Trisha Pullin, myself and 

a representative of each of the 

community groups running the 

stalls for their own fundraising. 

We do not have any other organisation 

to fall back on for the 

shortfall although the organisation 

does hold a reasonable cash 

reserve as a buffer. 

Of significance is that this 

iconic district event allows the 

community groups on the night 

to raise for their groups an 

amount in excess of $30,000. 

As I am moving out of the district 

it is time to seek a replacement 

chair and conductor of this 

big orchestra.

Selwyn MP Amy Adam 

writes about the public 

information she held in 

Selwyn last week on the 

End of Life Choice Bill. 

On Thursday I hosted a public 

information meeting here in 

Selwyn on the End of Life Choice 

Bill which is currently going 

through the select committee 

process in Parliament. 

The purpose of the meeting 

was to give local people the 

opportunity to hear from two 

Members of Parliament with 

contrasting views on this topic 

The two speakers were David 

Seymour, who has championed 

this Bill, and Maggie Barry, who 

is National’s spokeswoman for 

issues affecting senior citizens. 

Both speakers spoke thoughtfully 

on this topic and presented 

their respective views about assisted 

dying to the audience. 

For those who were unable 

to attend the meeting and are 

interested to learn more about 

this topic, the aim of the Bill is 

to give people with a terminal

requesting assisted dying. 

One of the most important 

issues around this Bill for me 

personally is making sure that 

the appropriate safeguards are in 

place and the law is not capable 

of being misused. 

The provisions of the Bill 

specify that two medical practitioners 

must approve the request

specialist for their opinion.

from many people here in 

Selwyn who have strong views 

both for and against this Bill. 

In a recent survey that I sent 

to a random selection of local 

residents, the majority of respondents 

stated that they were 

in favour of giving the terminally 

ill the right to end their lives.

Wasps which hunt for spiders

THERE ARE somewhere 

between 2000 and 3000 native 

wasp species in New Zealand. 

Some of the larger native species 

belong to a family called 

Pompilidae or spider wasps, of 

which there are 11 species in 

New Zealand. 

On Christmas Eve last year, 

I observed one of these wasps, 

Priocnemis species, repeatedly 

searching on the verge of our 

lawn. 

These large 15-25mm long 

HUNTERS: The Priocnemis species wasps have long legs and 

iridescent black coloured wings. 

shiny black hunting wasps have 

long legs and iridescent black 

coloured wings. 

Pompilids are solitary wasps 

that paralyse large spiders with 

venom, drag them backwards 

across the ground into a nest 

hole, and lay a single egg on 

them. 

When the larva hatches, they 

eat the paralysed spider while it 

is still alive, saving its vital organs 

to last, just before the wasp 

larva pupates. 

Hosts are usually larger 

species including native 

trap-door or tunnelweb 

spiders. 

$10k for Camp Twitch 

CHRISTCHURCH mother 

Robyn Twemlow is out to 

make a difference in the lives of 

those diagnosed with Tourette 

Syndrome – and last week 

received $10,000 from the Mazda 

Foundation to aid her cause. 

Tourette’s is a condition characterised 

by tics, repetitive and 

involuntary movements. 

Five years ago, Ms Twemlow’s 

then-nine-year-old daughter 

Analise was diagnosed with the 

syndrome. 

But the pair found there was 

little support for them in the 

community. 

Ms Twemlow founded the 

Tourette’s Association of New 

Zealand as a way for her family 

to connect with other affected 

Kiwis. 

As well as running a support 

system for families and an 

information hub for those who 

have been recently diagnosed, 

the Tourette’s Association also 

began running a yearly camp 

called Camp Twitch. 

It brings together young 

people with Tourette’s and their 

families for a weekend of fun 

where their tics are welcomed. 

At Blackwells City Mazda 

last week Ms Twemlow was 

presented with $10,000 from the 

Mazda Foundation to help run

Camp Twitch, enabling more 

than 50 young people and their 

families to attend the camp. 

Ms Twemlow said the funding 

would reduce the financial stress

She said Camp Twitch is an 

environment where children 

can “tic loud and proud.” 

“It’s amazing to see them 

build their self-esteem and take 

ownership over their disorder. 

It also provides opportunity for 

parents to share their experiences 

of raising a child with 

Tourette Syndrome – so it’s an 

empowering experience for all 

involved.”

Lincoln’s semi-final 

hopes all but gone

LINCOLN Combined’s top-four 

UC Championship aspirations 

are hanging by a thread. 

A 38-0 drubbing at the hands 

of Nelson College on Saturday 

has all but ended their top four 

chances. 

Lincoln Combined will need 

to beat competition leaders, 

Christchurch Boys’ High in 

their final round-robin game 

this Saturday and hope results 

go their way. 

Coach Mike Wilson said his 

team struggled to match up 

against the size of the Nelson 

College forwards and their 

strong ball-runners on a muddy 

Nelson College field. 

“We couldn’t match their 

physicality,” he said. 

“They have some really strong 

ball-runners and while we tried 

to contain them, we could only 

do so much.” 

Wilson said his team was hard 

on defence for much of the first 

half. 

“It was 12-0 at half-time 

and we’d had no ball except for 

five minutes at the end of the 

half we’re we got them down to 

14 men for repeated infringements 

but couldn’t get over the 

line.” 

Wilson said conceding a soft 

try from the second-half kickoff 

didn’t help matters, but the 

boggy ground conditions took a 

toll later in the game. 

“We had (halfback Robert 

Sporke) almost sick at half-time 

and he is a supremely fit guy,” 

Wilson said. 

“Nelson are a very good team, 

possibly the best we’ve played 

and in those conditions, they’re 

hard to stop.” 

Lincoln Combined did welcome 

back captain Wil Gualter

Meet the alpacas 

at Sherlin Alpaca stud farm 

Established in 1999 by Lindsay and 

Sheryl Riddle, the delightful Sherlin Alpaca 

stud farm is sited on 22 hectares of land 

between West Melton and Templeton. 

Starting with five alpacas, the couple 

gradually increased their herd and they 

now have around 300 head, from which 

they breed to sell stock and also shear the 

fibre for making alpaca products. 

They carry the two alpaca breeds – the 

Huacaya, which has a coat similar to a 

sheep fleece, and the Suri, which has a 

fleece like dreadlocks. Both breeds come in 

all the alpaca colours – black, brown, fawn, 

grey and white. 

Lindsay says alpacas are easy to care for, 

have personality, and make ideal pets for 

a lifestyle block. They eat grass when it’s 

plentiful and meadow hay, lucerne baleage 

or lucerne chaff in the winter. The young 

alpacas are halter trained at Sherlin, so 

they can be taken for walks. For anyone 

interested in acquiring two or more 

animals, Lindsay and Sheryl will provide 

all the necessary advice on their care and 

requirements. 

“We like to get to know the people who 

are looking to buy alpacas and we explain 

how and why we got into breeding them 

and what they can expect,” Lindsay says. 

Sherlin Alpaca offers farm tours, during 

which visitors can see the alpacas and hand 

feed them. They also have a shop with a wide 

selection of alpaca-orientated products on 

display. These include items hand-knitted 

by Sheryl such as clothes for babies and 

children up to five years of age. They design 

and make their own thermal socks, which 

are very popular, and the Comfy Sock, a 

bed sock suitable for diabetics, or anyone 

who has cold feet in bed. They also have 

garments from Peru, the home country of 

the alpaca. 

Lindsay and Sheryl take their mobile 

unit and alpacas to A&P Shows around 

Canterbury, while the 2018 National 

Alpaca Show being held in Christchurch at 

the A&P Showgrounds from October 5-7 

is an opportunity for the public to see the 

country’s top alpacas compete for Best in 

Show. An alpaca shown by Sherlin won the 

honour at the first National Show in 2004.

Along with Rolleston, Lincoln is 

considered to be one of the fastest 

growing towns in Selwyn. 

Over the last 20 years, Lincoln has 

tripled its population and the trend to

to the 2017 Lincoln University Planning

While the village centre of Lincoln

Mullins says sections in Flemington 

continue to be sought after and sales 

are strong. Flemington offers sections 

ranging from 400m 2 to 750m 2 and still 

has 300 sections to come to the market. 

Bayleys sales representative for Fulton 

Hogan’s Rosemerryn subdivision, 

Nathan Collett, says that they too have 

seen a significant increase in enquiries 

over the past months. Rosemerryn 

currently has three stages open for sales 

with section sizes ranging from 429m 2 

to 2,282m 2 and due to high demand is 

set to release its next stage in spring. 

Sections through these companies 

can be purchased privately or through 

a choice of housing companies offering 

turnkey or design and build options. 

Both agree that the future growth for 

Lincoln looks promising. Mr Collett 

says their buyers love the new amenities 

that Lincoln now has to offer and 

believes that as land prices increase in 

other areas such as Halswell, Prebbleton 

and even Rolleston, Lincoln still 

provides excellent value. 

With the partnership of Lincoln 

University and AgResearch’s $206 

million Joint Facility for learning and 

research soon to be based in Lincoln 

and the New Zealand Army centralising 

its operation in Burnham, Mr Mullins 

says both will bring more families to 

the wider area including Lincoln.

ARE YOU keen to get going on 

your spring planting but know its 

slightly too early to do so? How 

about sorting out some hanging 

baskets that will erupt in flowers 

before you’ve even planted your 

first tomatoes. 

Hanging baskets are a great 

way to liven up any area, whether 

it’s a large or small space. Suspend 

them in entrance ways, under 

verandas, decks and patios. 

And what’s really great about 

baskets is they are super easy to 

assemble. Grab a basket, many 

come with a fitted coconut liner 

but if not get some sphagnum 

moss to line it with. 

Baskets come in wide wire 

frames, more compact versions 

of wicker style or solid conical 

shapes. Whatever you choose I 

recommend getting a basket/s at 

least approx 30cm in diameter. 

Solid baskets have the benefit 

of not drying out as quickly. But 

they don’t allow for you to cascade 

plants around the sides and 

base of the basket. Wire ones have 

a real cottage garden feel. 

Coconut liners are solid and ideal 

for wire baskets with bigger gaps. 

Using sphagnum moss wouldn’t 

work on a wire basket as the moss 

would fall through the gaps.

watering reservoir which might 

save you watering for a few days 

in summer. I like to place an old 

saucer at the bottom of the basket 

which acts as a water catcher 

and helps the basket to retain its 

moisture. 

When assembling your basket, 

first soak the liner in a bucket of 

water for five minutes to really 

help its hydration. Line your 

basket with the coconut or moss 

liner. Then fill it almost to the top 

with lightweight potting soil mix 

and compost. 

An easy trick here is to balance 

your round basket on an old 

bucket so it stays flat while you 

are assembling it.

Do you remember loading it 

into white cheese sauce or sprinkling 

it on your eggs? Parsley was, 

and remains, a favourite herb in 

many Kiwi kitchens. 

And it’s not surprising when 

you think about how hugely versatile 

a herb it is. Almost any boiled 

vegetable can be topped with 

parsley (and butter in our house). 

Appetisers, whether they’re fish, 

hummus or cheese-based, can all 

mixing in some water gel crystals. 

They retain water in the summer 

months and help if you miss a day 

or two of watering. 

And now for your plants. 

Choose a vibrant hanging basket 

mix which features a range of 

suitable, seasonal flowers. Some 

favourites include lobelia, pansy, 

English daisy, dwarf antirrhinum, 

viola and primula. Although this 

does change with the seasons. 

Try adding plants in the middle 

that pack a bit of height. Dwarf 

antirrhinum (also known as 

dwarf snapdragons) are perfect 

for this. Or looking for something 

a bit more practical and close to 

kitchen? Add some parsley or 

basil in the middle and keep your 

cascading flowers on the edges. 

Wondering how many to add 

to one basket? If it’s 30cm across 

three to five plants is suitable. 

Slightly wider and you could 

easily fit seven. I like a really full 

basket right from the start so I 

really pack them in. 

Once established hanging 

baskets require little maintenance 

other than regular watering – 

especially during the hot summer 

months. But right now they won’t 

need a lot of water. 

So, stop waiting for spring to 

arrive to get back out into your 

gardens. Spring to it now and 

plant some baskets.

benefit from a sprinkling of parsley. 

Find yourself short on basil 

for your pesto? Just use parsley 

instead. The list of uses for parsley 

in the kitchen are endless. 

I like to have both flat leaf 

parsley (sometimes called Italian 

parsley) and curly parsley on 

hand in my vege garden. Generally 

the flat leaf (left) is the stronger 

variant. Although this can change 

depending on how old your plant 

is and how much sun it gets. 

People often find it super easy 

to grow and once established 

parsley requires little maintenance. 

Parsley likes rich fertile soil 

topped with compost or manure 

if available. Plant it in a sunny 

spot or in pots close to the kitchen. 

Once established, it doesn’t 

need a heap of watering. 

If any flowers appear and it 

starts looking like it’s going to 

seed, I quickly cut these out and it 

will continue to reward. 

Because it grows so easily I 

sometimes find myself with an 

abundance of parsley. 

After I’ve given some away and 

frozen some more I like to use 

it in some parsley-concentrated 

recipes – particularly salsa verde

have readily available at the
