Sumner club runners take on<br />
cross-country national champs<br />

SIX SUMNER Running Club<br />
members travelled to Wellington<br />
over the weekend to take on<br />
some of the country’s best at the<br />
Athletics New Zealand national<br />
cross-country championships.<br />
Close to 500 runners assembled<br />
at Grenda North Park to<br />
take on the muddy track. The<br />
championships saw national<br />
champions crowned from the<br />
under-11 grade through to the<br />
over 75s.<br />
David Fitch was the best of the<br />
Sumner contingent, finishing<br />
sixth overall in the men’s masters<br />
grade. His time of 31min 39sec<br />
across the 8km course was also<br />
good enough to see him finish<br />
fifth in the men’s 40 and over<br />
grade.<br />
Fellow Sumner runner Nathan<br />
Jones finished the race 13th<br />
overall in a time of 33min 28sec,<br />
good enough for 10th in the<br />
men’s 40 and over grade.<br />
Fitch and Jones were also part<br />
of the Canterbury men’s 35-49<br />
four person team. Their times<br />
helped Canterbury to a bronze<br />
medal, behind Wellington and<br />
Auckland.<br />
Rosie Hay, Jennie Nicholson<br />
and Katherine Fitch all competed<br />
in the women’s masters<br />
race. Nicholson finished the 6km<br />
course in a time of 31min 22sec<br />
to finish 18th overall and eighth<br />
in the women’s 30 and over. Hay<br />
was 20th overall and fourth in<br />
the women’s 35 and over with<br />
a time of 32min 41 sec. Fitch<br />
finished 29th overall and fourth<br />
in the women’s 45 and over in a<br />
time of 36min 1sec.<br />
In the juniors, Maddie Sharpe<br />
ran the 3km course in 14min<br />
21sec to finish 12th in the girls<br />
under-13 grade.<br />
