BeatRoute Magazine is a monthly arts and entertainment paper with a predominant focus on music – local, independent or otherwise. The paper started in June 2004 and continues to provide a healthy dose of perversity while exercising rock ‘n’ roll ethics. Asian theatre at this third annual<br />

Monsoon Festival. Toronto’s Anita<br />

Majumdar’s critically acclaimed onewoman<br />

show, the Fish Eyes Trilogy,<br />

which explores the lives of Canadian<br />

South Asian teens, is one not to miss.<br />

In celebration of the French-Italian-<br />

Pan Asian fusion restaurant’s third<br />

birthday, the East Vancouver eatery<br />

is launching a new family-style menu.<br />

Look for charcoal adobo wagyu<br />

beef with braised turnips alongside<br />

fresh cocktails like O My Sake, which<br />

combines Senkin Junmai Sake with<br />

pear juice and green tea syrup.<br />

EAST VAN CIDER FESTIVAL<br />

<strong>August</strong> 22 at The Wise Hall &<br />

Lounge<br />

The second annual East Van Cider<br />

Festival, presented by Liberty Wine<br />

Merchants, will feature a variety of<br />

British Columbia-made ciders, mead,<br />

and spirits. All proceeds of the festival<br />

will benefit the Great Vancouver Food<br />

Bank Society.<br />

HONK!<br />

<strong>August</strong> 10-12 at Strange Fellows<br />

Brewing<br />

Vancouver’s Carnival Band presents<br />

the city’s inaugural edition of HONK!,<br />

a brass band and drum line festival<br />

that celebrates music as much as it<br />

advocates for social change. Seattle’s<br />

Filthy Femcorps and Rise Up! Action<br />

Band will join local bands like Balkan<br />

Shmalkan and Greenhorn.<br />

UNIBROW ARTS FESTIVAL<br />

<strong>August</strong> 24-27 at various locations<br />

Presented by the Vancouver Art Book<br />

Fair, Vancouver’s first comedy and zine<br />

festival is a celebration of local funny,<br />

artistic, and written talent. There will<br />

be a limited edition zine available as<br />

well, featuring a special collection of<br />

poetry, cartoons and more.<br />

VANCOUVER OUTSIDER ARTS<br />

FESTIVAL<br />

<strong>August</strong> 10-12 at Roundhouse<br />

Community and Arts Recreation<br />

Centre<br />

This three-day festival presents music,<br />

artwork, spoken word performances<br />

and more with a purpose to disrupt<br />

exclusion and encourage connection.<br />

In a co-presentation with the Vines<br />

Art Festival, the VOAF will also put<br />

on a special series and discussion to<br />

follow about accessibility and ableism.<br />

QUICKIE<br />

<strong>August</strong> 11 at the James Black Gallery<br />

A large roster of emerging artists<br />

including Moody Rose Christopher<br />

and Liz Saunders are featured in this<br />

joint exhibition that explores the<br />

concept of instant gratification, in a<br />

range of disciplines from installation<br />

to painting.<br />
