The adult is brown, 7-12mm long, with SPORTS transparent, tent-like wings and long antennae. They lay white elongated eggs, less than 1mm long, at night on leaves near infestations of prey, usually aphids, but also psyllids, mealy bugs and small caterpillars. Larvae grow from 1.8mm to 9mm, are brown with large hollow jaws, which they use to capture and suck the contents of their prey. Larvae are known to be cannibalistic. Adults use their jaws to hold and chew prey, often consuming them completely. Adults also feed on nectar as a supplementary food source. The free district council and Selwyn Sports Trust-organised annual event is now in its fourth year, and will return on August 26. District council senior events and recreation adviser Dave Tippett said the day has been one of the most popular events on the district’s recreation calendar. “Over 1200 people enjoyed trying out new sports and activities at Have a Go Day in 2017,” he said. “We’re excited to bring the event to Darfield this year to showcase the sport and recreation activities Darfield, neighbouring communities and the wider Selwyn district has to offer.” About 20 indoor and outdoor sports, activities, games and challenges are planned, including dodgeball, archery, quake floorball, golf, squash, skating, highland games, smallbore rifle, bowling, softball and much more. Those attending will be able to collect their Have a Go Day passport from any activity station. This event is for all ages and abilities. More than $700 in prizes will be up for grabs on the day. Live music will be provided as part of the entertainment, with coffee and food also available for purchase. The event will be held between noon and 3pm at the Darfield Recreation Centre and Domain on North Tce.

Congratulations to all the 2018 Selwyn Awards nominees, runners up and winners of the ten categories. It was a pleasure to see everyone in attendance enthusiastically celebrating and recognising the successes of the outstanding contributors to the district. 50 nominations were received from the public, highlighting the incredible achievements of individuals and businesses around the district. Well-known TV personality and MC for the evening, Jeremy Corbett’s humour and wit was truly delivered at the awards. The evening’s atmosphere was enhanced with a delightful solo from Hanna Hogg, a superb hip hop dance performance from Manaia Davies, Eddie Adams, Barnaby Maude and Liam Morris, a sensational silk performance from Maia Adams as well as rocking entertainment from local band 4Stroke. Attendees enjoyed a sumptuous menu created by The Catering Department featuring local produce and award winning Selwyn beverages. A huge thank you to all of our Gold, Silver, Bronze, Product and Service and Food and Beverage sponsors, without them the awards simply wouldn’t be possible! Special thanks also to this year’s judges, who added their impeccable experience and expertise to the difficult job of narrowing the already impressive nominees down to an inspiring selection of runners up and winners. It was noted that it was an incredibly hard decision this year and all nominees were worthy of celebration and recognition.
