When Lake Forest fire and police departments arrived on scene, they encountered a 2009 Subaru Outback that was underneath the rear of a tractor/ trailer style semi-truck. The automobile was on fire, still trapped under the semi-truck, with flames From AUG. 18 coming from the engine compartment of the automobile. Deputy Chief of Police Rob Copeland said the semi-truck was sitting at the intersection waiting for the light to change, when the semi was hit from behind by the driver of the Subaru Outback. The front-end of the Subaru was under the semi “almost into the drivers space, about nine inches from her face,” Copeland said. In an effort to protect the lone occupant of the car, Lake Forest Police attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers. The Lake Forest Fire Department upgraded response for additional fire, EMS units and a Lifestar helicopter. Firefighters also simultaneously initiated aggressive fire attack and administered emergency medical care for the patient trapped inside the vehicle. Extrication was performed to remove the patient from the vehicle. The patient of the Subaru was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in serious condition with multiple injuries. The occupant of the semi-truck was not injured and did not have insurance. There were no injuries to bystanders or firefighters. At this time there are pending charges following toxicology reports, according to Copeland. Route 41 was shut down in both directions to allow for safe landing of the helicopter. Lake Forest was assisted at the scene by Highland Park, Deerfield and Northbrook fire departments. The scene was turned over to the Lake Forest Police Department for investigation. Staff Report Those wanting to pay off overdue fines at the Northbrook Public Library now have a new, unique method of payment. Until Aug. 31, $10 in fines will be waived for every item dropped off as a donation to the Northfield Township Food Pantry. For example, $30 in overdue fines on an account will be erased with three donated items. The pantry is especially in need of canned peas and vegetables, boxed cereal, coffee, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, diapers (any size), and 100 percent bottled juice and juice boxes. The library will accept all types of nonperishable food items, from soup to veggies to pasta and more, during Food for Fines. Before donating, the library would like to remind those interested to check the expiration date, remember that the library can accept non-perishable items in cans, plastic containers, or boxes and to make sure the packaging of the donation isn’t damaged. Grants of $25,000 will be awarded to the top 40 agencies who acquire the most online votes. The NSYMCA has asked the community to vote online at the designated State Farm Neighborhood Assist® NSYMCA page, at neighborhoodassist.com/ entry/2011293. Voting runs until Aug. 24, and individuals can vote 10 times per day, every day. The Y’s “2 Seconds 2 Long” campaign is focused on giving all local secondgraders the opportunity to become safe around water. “The $25,000 grant would provide funds for over 150 second grade students to participate in the Y’s water safety lessons,” said Missy Contri, NSYM- CA’s Director of Aquatics, “and guarantee free swim safety lessons to those who need it. Teaching a child to swim is an important life skill that saves lives.” The Y is coordinating with four schools in Wheeling and three schools in Northbrook to recruit and transport children for swim safety classes this fall, and will be expanding to more schools as the year progresses.
