20 | August 23, 2018 | The Northbrook tower news northbrooktower.com NBJH student participates in ComEd Icebox Derby Staff Report For five years, ComEd has set out to encourage young women to pursue careers in STEM through its Icebox Derby program. Each year, ComEd selects 30 young women students, ages 13-18, to participate in the program. The participants include students from communities throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Northbrook resident Andrea Chacon, a student at Northbrook Junior High, was selected to participate this year. Throughout the program, participants worked in teams to transform used refrigerators into electric- and solar-powered race cars. The fridges were collected through a ComEd program that picks up customers’ old working refrigerators for free and recycles them in an environmentally responsible way. Over a three-week span from July 19 to Aug. 4, students met regularly and worked alongside ComEd mentors to build their cars for the derby. The cars were equipped with software that provided real-time metrics that helped the girls drive more safely and efficiently and monitor their speed and battery voltage. The program cumulated with a race on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Daley Plaza. The race tested not only the girls’ speed and craftsmanship, but also their analytical skills and ability to work together to achieve a common goal. Through the program, the young women will each receive $1,500 in scholarship money.
