Our young musicians sounded great this
afternoon when they performed all they
learned during this week’s Band Camp at
Wood Oaks. It’s going to be a great musical
year here in District 27!
An intriguing number from this week’s edition
of four players had to work
together to complete eight different
events at the second annual
Northbrook After Dark. For more, please
Looking over my shoulder after an incredible ride
Grady Bruch
Editorial Intern
I
thought I knew it all
about the North Shore.
After living basically
my whole life here, I assumed
that I understood
everything about it and
everything in it. But only
a couple of months here at
22nd Century Media has
opened my eyes to this
truly special area.
I thought Glenview and
Northbrook were just like
any other town — but
we’re so much more than
that. There are so many
incredible people making
awesome things happen
around here. From visiting
Hackney’s and talking with
Chicago Bears greats, to
learning about small business
owners around town,
all the way to the superb
athletes our high school
are sending off to college,
everyone has a story.
And with every new story
came a new opportunity to
see what was happening
around town.
Going in I assumed I
would be what everyone
thinks when they hear
the word “intern.” My
guess was I was going
to grab coffee, do some
photocopying, maybe edit
a couple stories and then
maybe, if I was fortunate
enough, I’d get a story
about someone’s cat that
jumped out of a tree.
Instead, I’ve been given
story after story about
all different people and
things going on around
Glenview and Northbrook.
Not only that, but I was
almost immediately writing
about front cover news
and major features in our
town. Every new story was
a deeper dive into what’s
going on around town and
the people who make these
towns what they are.
Of course, there has
been some learning
throughout these last couple
months. I don’t think I
can recall how many times
my editors have had to edit
an obvious AP style mistake
in my stories, but if I
had to guess, it’s a lot. But
through these mistakes,
I’ve grown as a writer
and have gained experience
that I don’t think I
would’ve gained anywhere
else, especially in such a
short span of time.
I couldn’t thank 22nd
Remember your vacation, in The Tower
As surprising as it
may seem to all
of us, the summer
season is quickly winding
down.
Regardless of your
seasonal preference, this
time of the year offers our
readers a unique chance
to look back at something
I’m sure we all love — a
family summer vacation.
Less than one month
ago, I returned from a
family vacation of my
own to Alaska. It was a
truly remarkable trip and
by trip’s end, I had saved
nearly 1,000 photos on my
camera. But, none of those
photos are eligible for The
Tower’s annual Family
Vacation Photo Contest.
Now that you’ve heard
enough about me, let’s
focus on you, our wonderful
readers.
Did you go on an awesome
family vacation this
summer and snap a photo
while on your trip? If you
did, we want to see it.
Send your photo to us for
the chance to be featured
in our Sept. 6 issue and
be selected as the winner
of this year’s contest. The
winner will receive a prize
for a local Northbrook
business.
You still have time to
submit your photo to us.
Entries are due at 5 p.m.
Aug. 31. To submit, send
your entry to editor Martin
Carlino at martin@northbrooktower.com
or to The
Northbrook Tower, 60
Revere Drive Suite 888,
Northbrook, 60062.
I look forward to seeing
all the fun your family had
this summer.
Century Media enough
for this opportunity and I
know with such fantastic
editors this newspaper will
only be getting better. I’d
also like to thank Chris
Pullam, Martin Carlino
and Michal Dwojak for
giving me an opportunity
to succeed and helping me
to become both a better
writer and a more educated
journalist.
It’s been a pleasure
bringing the news to these
two extraordinary towns
and I know that with
such brilliant editors at
the helm, I have no doubt
that every reader will
continue to learn as much
as I have about Glenview
and Northbrook. And as I
said earlier, everyone has
a story, and it has been
an honor to learn just a
few here in Glenview and
Northbrook.
