Sister Berchmans Grade 4
The last mentioned is of course the most famous. One could fill a hundred pages and
that would only scratch the surface so I will try a few.
“Nigs” claim that no-one from St Anthony’s ever failed to get their merit certificate was,
I reckon, true. We were too frightened not to remember on those hot summer
days..……..I know that she was cruel and hard but she got results and we were better
off for it. All in all my memories of St Anthony’s are great.
I remember the one penny a lesson for singing with Eddie Drill and threepence for
physical culture with Jock Stanley. Another good thought was when the school
inspector was due to arrive and “Nigs” would put the fear of the Lord into you. Then on
the given day Mr O’Lauchlin arrived and you would never meet a nicer kinder man. So
“Nigs” tricked us again.
Nancy & Margaret O’Meara:
The O’Meara family arrived in Glen Huntly in 1926. The school building was two stories
with four classrooms upstairs and down. The playground was bigger then, and there
was room for two tennis courts behind the buildings, a shelter shed, and another
building called the clubrooms. The present tennis courts were just a paddock and the
fathers attended working bees to clear the land for playground space.
Miss Doherty taught grade 2, Miss Taylor grades 3 & 4, Sister Berchmans grade 5,
Sister Aidan grade 6, whilst Sister Benignus taught grades 7 & 8. Sister Magnise
managed a composite prep and grade 1. Mr Drill came in to teach singing and Miss
Raynor coached in dancing. The highlights of the school year were the end of year
concert and the ball.
Les Foran:
I came to live at St Anthony’s Parish aged 10 months in 1929. I went to school aged
around 5 and my first teacher was Sister Kevin and then in grade 2 Miss Doherty. She
was very good at teaching elocution. Elocution was always a specialty of the house at
St Anthony’s in those days. Mr Drill came every week to teach singing. Other elocution
teachers were Ms Allen and Ms Sarah Mercovitch. Ms Taylor taught 4th grade but Ms
Bertram taught me in the 4th grade. Sister Benignus of course was head of the school
and taught grades 7 & 8 whilst Mother Francis taught grade 6.
