A boating tragedy
in Thailand has

we have rules on the
water
I am back at work at the
Harbourmaster’s Office
after a month off.
I was lucky enough
to spend three weeks in
Thailand complete with
30 o C days, great food,
cheap beer and lovely
people.
While I was there, in
the newspapers there was
a lot of publicity about a
charter boat that capsized
killing lots of people.
A real tragedy.
Any death - whether
caused by natural or
unnatural causes – is sad,
but ones caused by human
error can be avoided.
The unnecessary pain
caused to the relatives and
friends of the deceased is

In New Zealand, we are
very lucky when it comes
to our boating industry.
For both commercial
and recreational boating,
there are sound rules
and regulations in place
to ensure the safety of
everyone on the water.
Sometimes it takes a
tragedy like the one in
Thailand to bring things
into perspective.
When I am out and
about, I spend time
talking to boaties who
are not wearing a life
jacket, speeding too close
to the shore or taking
other risks. Sometimes
the response from them
is: “It’s okay I have been
doing this for years.” or
“What harm am I doing?”
or even “The rules are
for the people who don’t
know what to do.”
The Maritime New
Zealand slogan that
“nobody is faster than
disaster” rings true in
these cases.
Safety is everyone’s
responsibility and the
rules are there for a
reason.
They should be followed
even by experienced
boaties who have been
heading out on the water
for years.
If you are in doubt
about something before
heading out on the
water – be it an ill-fitting
lifejacket, poor weather
or a boat without
communications – do
not go out. Before long
we’ll be entering another
summer boating season,
and this summer my goal
is to ensure we have an
incident-free year.
I cannot do this alone.
I need all you boaties
out there to stick to the
rules and help us avoid a
tragedy.
