opprairie.com NEWS the orland park prairie | September 6, 2018 | 11 Police Reports Man allegedly drives in wrong lanes with no headlights while intoxicated Scott A. Burns, 43, of 13323 Maverick Trail in Homer Glen, was charged Aug. 5 with two counts of aggravated DUI (no valid driver’s license and revoked driver’s license), as well as one count each of driving without lights when required, improper traffic lane usage, unsafe tires, illegal transportation of alcohol and driving while license suspended/revoked after he allegedly drove a 2007 Honda Odyssey northbound in the southbound lanes of LaGrange Road. Police received a call regarding a vehicle near 159th Street and LaGrange Road traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of La- Grange Road without headlights around 11:46 p.m., according to the report. An off-duty officer from Berwyn reportedly spotted the vehicles weaving in and out of traffic, with a flat driver’s side front tire, around the 14400 block of LaGrange Road. The vehicle swerved, struck a curb, ripping off a tire and filling the air with smoke, before it turned right across three lanes of traffic, went over a curb, onto a sidewalk and through grass before it came to a rest in the parking lot of Submarine City at 9573 W. 144th Place in Orland Park, police said. Burns reportedly got out of the vehicle and walked toward the business door. He was stumbling and had an odor of alcohol on him; with glassy, watery and bloodshot eyes; as well as slurred speech/a thick tongue; police said. He allegedly refused field sobriety tests, a breath test, and blood and urine samples. His license was expired and revoked for DUI, according to the report. An open bottle of whiskey was found on the front, passenger’s floorboard, almost empty, police said. July 28 • Michael K. Benson, 37, of 9006 178th St. in Tinley Park, was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as one count each of possession of hypodermic needles and obstructing identification, after police reportedly received calls regarding Benson being “belligerent” at a drug store in the 7900 block of 159th Street. He walked away as police told him to stop, got into the passenger’s side of a vehicle and told the driver to go, according to the report. He then got out and tried to flee, police said. Inside the vehicle, police reportedly found a hypodermic syringe on the passenger floorboard with several orange needle caps; a spoon with white residue on the center console; copper steel wool on the floorboard; a syringe containing heroin on the passenger’s seat; an empty syringe on the seat; two syringes under the seat (one of them loaded with a substance); a glass pipe with copper steel wool and burnt residue on the rear, driver’s-side floorboard; as well as 1 1/2 yellow and orange pills. The pills were identified as alprazolam, police said. Benson allegedly gave police a name redacted in the report. He reportedly had a warrant for failure to appear out of Will County. The driver of the vehicle was released without charges, according to the report. July 27 • Jozef A. Gawlak, 57, of 15010 Saw Grass Lane in Homer Glen, was charged with aggravated DUI, DUI and improper lane usage after the 2003 Mini Cooper he allegedly was driving was stopped on 151st Street near Wolf Road. Police spotted the vehicle drifting within the lane while traveling northbound on Wolf Road, before turning left onto 151st Street and stopping on the side of the road after drifting more within the lane, according to the report. Gawlak’s speech was stuttered, his eyes bloodshot and glossy, and he stumbled, police said. There was an odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and on Gawlak’s breath, police said. Gawlak allegedly performed field sobriety tests. He was arrested after showing indicators of intoxication, according the report. He allegedly refused a breath sample. He had three prior arrests for DUI, police said. • Antwahn T. Berry, 27, of 3139 Courtney Lane in South Chicago Heights, was charged with retail theft after he allegedly tried to take a chain saw and a fuel cell valued at a total of $308.98 from a home improvement store in the 7300 block of 159th Street. He reportedly put the chain saw in a cart and left through a selfcheckout lane without paying. July 26 • Jasmine O. Green, 25, of 9333 Hunter Drive in Orland Hills, was charged with retail theft and battery after she allegedly tried to take makeup valued at a total of $17.97 from a grocery store in the 9300 block of 159th Street. She reportedly ran out of the bathroom, grabbed a 58-yearold employee by the arm and shoved her aside, leaving three makeup boxes on the floor in the bathroom as she fled. A description was provided to police, who stopped her and identified her, according to the report. The stolen items were found in her pockets, police added. July 25 • Erik Castaneda, 18, of 13135 Winchester Ave. in Blue Island, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis (30-500 grams) with intent do deliver and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia after police reportedly stopped a 2003 Toyota Camry he was driving in the 14400 block of John Humphrey Drive. He allegedly drove through a stop sign at 94th Avenue while traveling northbound on John Humphrey Drive. There was an odor of cannabis coming the passenger’s compartment of the vehicle. Inside the vehicle’s center console, police found a sandwich bag containing cannabis stems, $4 in cash, a digital scale with cannabis residue, a bag containing small bags containing cannabis leaves, and sandwich bags, according the report. Police said they also found a bag containing cannabis weighing 6.8 grams in the passenger door pocket; $60 in the driver’s door pocket; a BB gun in the backseat; an olive jar with a “small amount” of cannabis; a backpack containing $147; and a backpack containing 14 cannabis oil vape pens in packaging, a jar containing cannabis weighing 65.5 grams, a bag containing cannabis weighing 10.4 grams and a bag containing cannabis weighing 4.5 grams; a BB gun in the glove compartment; a ski mask on the passenger’s front floorboard; and fireworks in the trunk. A passenger was issued a municipal violation for unlawful possession of cannabis. • Kelly M. Gutierrez, 34, of 16702 Hilltop Ave. in Orland Hills, was charged with six counts of theft after she allegedly took $1,408 through fraudulent returns at a department store where she worked at Orland Square. The store conducted a monthly audit of “no receipt returns” and noticed Gutierrez had numerous in her name, according to the report. She reportedly made six between June 2 and July 18 for a total of $1,408. On video, she was seen scanning items on display, manually entering item numbers or scanning what customers already returned as defective, and refunding the money to a personal credit card. July 24 • Juan E. Landa, 55, of 1645 W. Le Moyne St. in Chicago, and West A. Derrick, 52, of 14512 Green Street in Harvey, each were charged with felony retail theft after they allegedly tried to take merchandise valued at a total of $300 from a department store at Orland Square and merchandise valued at $267 from another store. They both allegedly selected items, creating a pile inside of a clothing rack, then placed the items inside of plastic bags and left without paying for the items. They were stopped by a loss prevention offer, handed back a couple of items, ran and put a bag in a garbage can under the bag of garbage inside of a different department store, according to the report. They then went to a restaurant inside of the mall and changed clothes before they were stopped at the bar, police said. Derrick additionally was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said a glass pipe was logged into evidence. July 22 • Courtney A. Bilyeu, 38, of 19533 116th Ave. in Mokena, was charged with retail theft after she allegedly tried to take eight items valued at a total of $80.95 from a store in the 15800 block of 94th Avenue. She entered a fitting room inside of the store with two T-shirts, left with them no longer visible and did not pay for anything, according to the report. She then came back into the store, concealed items in her purse, went into a fitting room, put on a shirt and a baseball cap, and left again without paying, police said. She reportedly was stopped.
