Moon Facts
The moon is the Earth’s only natural satellite or space
body that orbits us. It’s estimated to be 4.5 billion years
old and is an incredible 384,403 kilometres (238,857
miles) from Earth. You can only ever see one side of
the moon. The tallest mountain on the moon is Mons
Huygens, which is 4700 metres tall. During the day the
temperature is about 107°C while at night it gets as
low as -153°C. It takes 27.3 days to orbit the Earth. The
gravitational pull of the moon causes Earth’s tides.
Galileo was the first person
to make a proper map of
the moon. The NASA Apollo
mission, in 1969, was the first
manned moon landing, and
Neil Armstrong was the first
man to set foot on the moon.
