4 Tuesday September 11 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Young dancers in The Nutcracker • By Ashleigh Monk FIVE ST Andrew’s College students will be dreaming of sugar plum fairies after scoring parts in the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s rendition of The Nutcracker. Eilish John, Jai Bartlett, Kate McFerran, Charlotte Brown and Anja Sander are part of the school’s ballet academy and will feature in the show at the Isaac Theatre Royal from November 22. Eilish, 11, and Jai, 12, said they were “so excited” to have the opportunity to dance alongside some of the country’s best ballerinas. “We got sent along to do an audition, and then maybe about a month later you either got an email saying ‘sorry you haven’t made it’ or ‘you made it’,” Eilish said. “We got the email to say we’d made it and it was brilliant,” Jai said. Jai has been learning ballet since he was four-years-old. “I always liked dancing to music as a child, whether that be with my mum or just alone,” he said. “I started doing ballet before coming to St Andrew’s, but as soon as the ballet programme opened in 2011 I jumped straight in. I think I was the ‘naughty duckling’ for one of my first performances there.” Eilish joined the St Andrew’s College Ballet Academy four years ago. “I had just moved to Christchurch and was a bit nervous about everything, and I wanted to try some new things. So when ballet came up I thought I’d give it a go, and I fell in love with it,” she said. The pair practised for hours each week and both played parts in last year’s school production of The Nutcracker. The first album featured 19 songs, and this year’s album will include more than 40 out of the 370 entries. “Every single day, every single secondary school student will hear a recorded song, and the craft of writing them is completely absent from life at school. Why? So that’s what I thought, let’s do something about it,” he said. Each finalist has been given funding to professionally record their song to be included on the album, which will be released by the end of the year. The suspect left Redwood Souvlaki with the box, which held about $100 in donations for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre. Shop manager Arshdeep Dhillon said he and his staff were at the back of the store when the man pulled the box from the front counter. “He just quietly came in and grabbed it and ran off,” he said. “When he ran we tried to catch him, but he ran so fast and jumped over a fence.” He said although there wasn’t a lot of money in the donation box, he was upset someone had taken it. “It’s awful, the money is supposed to be for those kids.” The man was wearing a blue Local News Now Thief does a runner with donation box Fire rages, homes at risk and white hooded sweatshirt, tan shorts and a black cap.
