Residents
to submit
quarry
petition
this week
• By Anan Zaki
TEMPLETON residents will
this week submit a petition
demanding to stop a proposed
Fulton Hogan quarry.
The petition has 4050 signatures
and was launched online by the
Templeton Residents Association
six months ago.
The proposed quarry is at a
170ha site on Curraghs, Dawsons,
Jones and Maddisons Rds.
Chairman Garry Kilday said
the petition will be presented
to Environment Canterbury,
Ministry for the Environment and
Selwyn District Council.
He could not confirm which
date this week the petition will be
presented.
Mr Kilday said the support
from the community has been
“massive.”
“It’s been good for public unity
because people have stood up in a
solid form.”
The petition had signatures
from Australia and the United
States.
“It’s amazing actually, the
amount of people who have
signed this petition, quite incredible
when you read it,” Mr Kilday
said.
THE FIGHT to stop the planned quarry in
Templeton goes up a level this week.
Opponents have gathered just over 4000
signatures on a petition and will send it
to Environment Canterbury, Ministry for
the Environment and the Selwyn District
Council.
The key people fighting the quarry are to be applauded.
This will be no easy scrap.
Fulton Hogan, which is looking to build the quarry, are a big
outfit with lots of money and the expertise to dig in for a war of
attrition.
It will be draining on those fighting Fulton Hogan and they
will need determination and stamina to stay in the battle.
Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday will
need to be one physically and mentally fit individual.
Kyle Park weed ‘disgraceful’
• By Anan Zaki
A BMX club says overgrown
weed at Hornby’s Kyle Park is
bringing down the area.
The city council put up fencing
around various parts of the park
that tested positive for asbestos
in 2015.
But there are no plans to remove
the asbestos at the former
landfill site.
Christchurch City BMX Club
track manager Michael Stronach
says Kyle Park has been forgotten
about since fencing was put up.
“It’s disgraceful, [the weed]
is as high as the fence in some
parts. It brings down the whole
park and looks horrible,” Mr
Stronach said.
He said city council staff only
removed the weed once, in January.
“We hosted the South Island
BMX championship and a member
of our committee chased up
council to do it.”
Since then the site has been left
neglected.
The BMX club had to remove
the weed themselves to improve
the appearance of the park.
“We spray weedkiller as much
as we can through the fence and
I’ve seen people pull weeds through
the fence,” Mr Stronach said.
He said visitors to the club
often asked about the state of the
weed.
“Before the fencing was put up
[in 2015], you used to be able to
use a fenced-off area as a viewing
platform, and people often ask
why you can’t anymore,” Mr
Stronach said.
City council community parks
manager Al Hardy said weeds
are controlled on a required
basis.
As for the asbestos, Mr Hardy
said the fencing is permanent
and is an appropriate measure to
assure public safety.
“The garden areas have been
mulched to ensure the amenity
of the park is retained while containing
the risk,” Mr Hardy said.
Greater Hornby Residents Association
chairman Marc Duff
said it was disappointing the city
council had no plans to remove
the asbestos.
“It looks like they have just
built the fence and walked away.
“They need to come up with a
Meanwhile, Kyle Park will be
Meanwhile, the campaign had
Mr Kilday said he is grateful for
the donations, but believed the
“At the end of the day, the
Call to look at heavy vehicle ban
• By Anan Zaki
THE Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
has asked city council staff to
look at the viability of a heavy
vehicle ban in Avonhead.
Board chairman Sam
MacDonald said it asked staff
last week to report back by
October 3.
The request comes after Avonhead
residents voiced their anger
over heavy traffic in the Western
News last week.
“We’ve asked staff to go away
and basically bring us a report
and say what our options are
with regard to a [heavy vehicle]
ban in the area,” Mr MacDonald
said.
Staff will investigate options
for a heavy vehicle ban
on Roydvale Ave (between
Avonhead Rd and Memorial
Ave), Avonhead Rd (between
Roydvale Ave and Russley Rd)
and Hawthornden Rd.
“We just want them to be very
clear, with the current rules in
place, what delegations the community
board has [to ban heavy
vehicles] and what evidence they
would require to do that,” Mr
MacDonald said.
But he steered clear of committing
to seek a heavy vehicle
ban in Avonhead.
“Until we get advice [from
staff], it wouldn’t be appropriate
to comment,” Mr MacDonald
said.
Hawthornden Rd resident Jon
Leadbeater said the community
board’s request was good news.
“People in the area would welcome
that. It could be a big step
to improve safety.
“The big wagon trucks, they
are the things that are concerning
to the residents.”
He hoped increased publicity
will get heavy traffic banned in
the area.
“I feel the publicity can make
the difference. [A ban] would
be a great outcome for everyone
concerned,” he said.
Mr Leadbeater said last week
that heavy vehicles are using
Roydvale Ave, Hawthornden Rd
and Cutts Rd as a shortcut.
He said heavy traffic increased
after the Avonhead and Russley
Rd intersection was closed in
November 2015, as part of NZ
UNSAFE:
request to see if a
heavy vehicle ban is
viable in Avonhead.
Transport Agency’s $112 million
It follows on from residents
in Fendalton and Wigram also
voicing opposition to heavy
vehicles travelling through residential
areas.
Fendalton residents last
month lost their bid to ban
she shaved her head for a
Daffodil Day fundraiser.
Mrs Johnston, 72, said
this is the third head
shave she has done she
convinced village manager
Russell Walters to join in
and shave his beard.
It’s an important cause
for Mrs Johnston, who
believes that all families
are affected by cancer at
some point.
“Someone at church
asked me if I’d shave my
head for cancer, and I told
her I would before I was
80.
“Unfortunately she
passed away, so I decided I
needed to do it to honour
Christchurch Boys’ High
“The aim is to create
Suburb of Sockburn quickly disappearing
• By Anan Zaki
SOCKBURN HAS been
mentioned in city records for
140 years, but local identities say
their suburb is under siege.
Former Paparua County clerk
and Sockburn resident of 49
years, Bryan Mooar, believed
the growth of the Wigram
subdivisions have played a large
role in the demise of Sockburn.
Mr Mooar was at the Paparua
County Council for 25 years, 13
of those as clerk, until it amalgamated
with Christchurch in
1989.
Sockburn resident of 68 years
Eddie Cutts agreed with Mr
Mooar’s views.
Mr Cutts is the grandson of
Albert Cutts, who once owned
Chokebore Lodge, which was associated
with horse racing.
“It’s disappearing because
we’ve got the very big Wigram
[residential] complex at the old
airport, together with the retirement
villages,” Mr Mooar said.
He said other factors that have
fuelled the decline of the area
was the 2011 closures of the
former Sockburn Service Centre
and the suburb’s last major freezing
works, the Alliance Freezing
Company.
The Alliance freezing works
IDENTITIES: Long-time Sockburn residents Bryan Mooar and Eddie Cutts at the Sockburn
roundabout.
was at the former site of the city
abattoir on Racecourse Rd.
Another closure that affected
the area was the Sockburn swimming
pool, which shut down in
2006, Mr Mooar said.
“The old abattoir was an old
identity and provided a lot of
job availability for people in the
area,” he said.
Recently the Sockburn Fire
Station was renamed Wigram
and next year Sockburn School
will move to Wigram.
“It’s not just quietly disappearing
. . . it’s being gobbled up,” Mr
Mooar said.
He believed the future of
the suburb was industrial and
there was no way to stop the
suburb being taken over.
“It’s just a matter of progress,
the city expanding and it’s only
one or two kilometres from
Riccarton Rd, which is a main
route,” Mr Mooar said.
He did not feel sad about
Sockburn being eroded away, as
he believed it was for the greater
good of the city.
Mr Cutts said much of Sockburn
has already disappeared as
the area was known for its horse
racing stables.
He believed the city’s population
growth has negatively
impacted the racing history of
the area.
“It’s disappearing now, all that
land by the Riccarton Racecourse
is being gobbled up developers
for high density living.
“Racecourse Rd and the surrounding
streets had horses
going to the track every morning
and now you’re not even allowed
a horse on the road. So Sockburn
has lost its identity.”
Mr Cutts wished his children
and grandchildren enjoyed the
area like he was able to.
“But you can’t live in the past
unfortunately, I would like to
though. We used to go over to
the racecourse and disappear for
the day, play in the pits, shoot
rabbits and fly kites.”
Rich farming and equine history
CITY LIBRARY records
showed that Sockburn was
first mentioned in 1878, in an
advertisement in The Press.
It was referred to as the “old
racecourse platform (Sockburn)”.
Library records showed that
Sockburn was the name of an
hold homestead of a farm, which
occupied the site where the city
abattoir stood on Racecourse Rd.
The railway platform on Alloy
St was first called Racecourse,
because it served the Riccarton
Racecourse.
The platform was later moved
to Hornby but a need developed
for a new station on the original
site. When this was built it was
given the name Sockburn.
In 1903, the Cyclopedia of New
Zealand described Sockburn as
a farming suburb, which was
rapidly becoming a residential
suburb.
The book stated that Sockburn
was home to a number of
abattoirs belonging to the city
council. There were also several
training stables in the neighbourhood.
In 1916, the suburb had an
airport to its name, but it was
renamed after the former mayor
Sir Henry Wigram in 1923.
The area was part of the
Paparua County Council until
1989, when it amalgamated with
the Christchurch City Council.
Since the turn of the 21st-century,
population figures indicated
slow growth in the area.
City council statistics showed
that from 2001 to 2016, the
population of Hornby/Sockburn
grew from 16,000 to an estimated
17,800.
In the same period, the population
of Halswell/Wigram jumped
from 19,000 to an estimated
26,000.
Sooty set to move out of The Swamp
Well-known publican
Stephen “Sooty” Moffett
is moving on from the
Islington Tavern after 26
years. He sat down with
reporter Anan Zaki to
discuss the highs and
lows
IT WAS the night of September
4, 2010, the city was still in
shock from the magnitude 7.1
earthquake which struck that
morning.
Businesses all over the city
were closed, but on Main South
Rd, the queues for the Islington
Tavern, also known as The
Swamp, spilled onto the footpath.
“We never missed a day. There
was just nowhere else [for people]
to go. One in the morning and
we had 100 people outside and
100 people inside and we’re only
allowed 144 people,” recalls Mr
Moffett.
“At one stage we had 11 doormen,
so it takes everything
you make away. We had people
dragging each other through
windows, it was crazy.”
The 54-year-old took over The
Swamp in August 1992, and
moved in above the pub. To this
day he does not know how it
became known as The Swamp.
“No idea and no one has ever
told me. It was always here.
Whether it had something to do
with the freezing works around
here, I don’t know,” Mr Moffett
said.
The pub has remained a popular
watering hole for freezing
workers and rugby league players.
When Mr Moffett took over, it
was his first foray into hospitality.
“My former in-laws were in
the [hospitality] game, and at the
time we thought it was a great
idea.”
Initially it was hard, working
long hours to keep the business
running, but that was just part of
the “tough” industry.
“I really slogged it out back
then,” he said.
One memorable moment that
he will never forget in his 26
years at The Swamp was a breakin
in the late 1990s.
“The most bizarre thing that’s
ever happened is I got robbed by
two people in wetsuits and [they]
emptied our gaming machines.
“The alarms didn’t go off, the
window was taken out and they
came through,” Mr Moffett said.
The break-in was caught on a
CCTV camera, but police were
never able to catch the thieves,
he said.
Mr Moffett started $5 roasts
which packed in customers.
“Twenty-six years ago, there
was just less choice. Hospitality is
really tough on the food game at
the moment.
“To sell a roast to a young
person now would be pretty hard,
whereas back then they would
come looking for it,” Mr Moffett
said.
Behaviour at pubs have also
changed for the better in recent
years, he said.
“Twenty-six years ago you’d
be waiting at the back door for
something to happen. It was the
wild west.
“Whereas now, if something
happened it would make the
newspaper,” Mr Moffett said.
When fights broke out, he
had no time for it and trespass
notices were handed out almost
immediately.
Mr Moffett said he is selling the
business to a “North Island-based
development company.”
He said the owners did not
want to be named.
However, Mr Moffett will still
be at The Swamp until the new
owners fully take over in late
February.
He decided to sell the business
after struggling through a year
of roadworks at Pound Rd from
2016 to 2017.
“It was never really for sale,
they [the new owners] came
trying to buy it and I guess once
you see roadworks around here,
you realise how vulnerable you
are to it affecting your business.
“We had a drastic change in
turnover, revenue fell about 20
per cent. But I’m not going to
say how much we turn over,” Mr
Moffett said.
He does not know what the
new owners plans are for the
property, but he believes the
name The Swamp will be kept.
And what will he miss the most
when he leaves The Swamp?
“The people. The characters
that come here, you get to know
them all over the years,” Mr
Moffett said.As for his own
nickname, “Sooty”, it originated
from The Sooty (TV) Show
TIME’S UP: Stephen
“Sooty” Moffett is
selling the Islington
Tavern, known as The
Swamp after 26 years
of ownership.
which ran from 1955 to 1992.
“When I worked at a
supermarket as a schoolboy
[in the 1970s], I used to pack
sausages, and the boss of the
butchery gave [the name].
“There was two of us [working
under the boss], I was called
Sooty and the other one was
called Sweep,” Mr Moffett said.
And he doesn’t plan to leave
the industry just yet.
“I’ve got another bar,
Schroeder’s in St Albans. At this
stage it’ll be the only one,” he
said. However, Mr Moffett did
not rule out buying a new bar.
He has some advice for anyone
looking into getting into the
hospitality industry.
“It’s [about] the customer,
the customer, the customer,”
Mr Moffett said. “No matter
what you think, it’s about the
customer.”
THE ST Thomas’ junior
basketball team’s South
Island title was two years
in the making.
The team dominated the
year 9 and 10 tournament
in Nelson last week, going
undefeated through to
the final where they beat
Shirley Boys’ High School
82-59.
Coach Nev Brooker
said the team finished
fourth at the tournament
12 months ago with eight
year 9s and three year 10s,
so to come back and win
the following year was a
CANTERBURY’S No
2 ranked tennis player
Dylan Heap has returned
from France where he
polished his ground
strokes with former world
No 10 and French Davis
Cup captain Arnaud
Clement.
The seven-week trip
also gave the 18-year-old
Waimairi player’s valuable
match experience, playing
in many prestigious open
tournaments during the
northern hemisphere
summer.
In all, he played 25
matches, winning 19,
and winning three
tournaments in the
process - the Rogne,
great feeling.
“We felt we could have
done better last year
but this year we were
amazing,” he said.
The school faced some
challenges. In the semifinal
they trailed Nelson’s
Waimea College heading
into the fourth quarter.
“They had a player,
Josh Book, who scored 35
points in the first half but
in the second we made
some adjustments and he
only managed 13 points
which helped us get back
into the game,” Brooker
said.
St Thomas’ fought back
to win the semi-final 88-
81. Tanae Lavery, Hunter
Adam and Tautahi Briggs
combined for 88 points in
the win.
The trio then travelled
to Invercargill for the
senior tournament.
Brooker said his teams’
superior three-point
shooting was invaluable
as was their ability to not
worry about the officiating
and just play their own
game.
“The boys stuck to their
task well and came away
with the result which
showed how talented they
were.”
Learning from the best
Auriol and Ventabren
opens.
Heap said his time with
Clement was invaluable.
“It was such a stepup
on hitting balls in
Christchurch and he was
so humble,” he said. “He
told me to make sure I
keep my passion for the
sport as I progress, even
during the tough time.”
Based in Aix-en-
Provence and playing at
the Country Club Aixois,
he enjoyed the challenge
of practising with Clement
and playing many friendly
matches with a multitude
of strong up-and-coming
French tennis players aged
between 16 and 25-yearsold.
Heap, a year 13
student at Christ’s College,
loved the chance to play
some great tennis and to
beat many players above
his level.
“I definitely benefited
from the experience,
which was awesome, and
can’t wait to do it all again
next July,” he said. Heap
spent the first three weeks
in France in the company
of his parents, and the last
three with his Waimairi
club coach and fellow
member of the premier
team Remi Feneon.
Dylan was NZ national
under-16 singles and
doubles champion for the
last two seasons.

Netball win 33 years in the making
• By Jacob Page
VILLA MARIA’S South Island
secondary schools netball title
gave their co-coaches closure 33
years in the making.
Helen Mahon-Stroud and Julie
Glen were in the Villa Maria
team which lost the 1985 final to
Southland Girls High School.
Last Thursday, against the
same school, at the same
location – Dunedin’s Edgar
Centre, the Villa team they now
mentored triumphed 39-26.
“I guess they did us a favour
by going one better than we
did,” Mahon-Stroud said.
“It’s one of those weird coincidences
in life and for both of us
to have daughters in the team, it
was a proud moment.”
It was Villa’s first South Island
title since 2008 and qualifies
them for the national tournament
in Timaru from October
9 to 12.
Shooter, Hannah Glen, midcourter
Georgia Stroud and
defender Olivia Burnham were
all named in the tournament
team following the final.
Villa went undefeated at the
four-day tournament winning
all eight games.
Mahon-Stroud praised her
team’s physical stamina to be
able to produces big plays after a
busy tournament.
“We tried to prepare as best
we could to combat tournamentstyle
netball,” she said.
“We had netball-related
activities Monday through
to Thursday for much of the
Christchurch season and I think
that put us in a good position for
the week.”
Villa’s fitness was best seen
when they produced an 11-4
third-quarter effort in the final
to put one hand on the trophy.
“We really clicked in that third
quarter and found our rhythm,”
Mahon-Stroud said.
“We looked after the ball but
played a more up-tempo style of
game that we wanted to play.
“Hannah provides a tall
option for us to aim at in the
shooting circle and I thought
our mid-court did a great job of
getting the ball to her,” she said.
“I thought Southland really
tried to look after the ball and
were extremely patient, particularly
in the first half.”
Mahon-Stroud said the team
would now break for a week
to focus on term three exams
before training would resume.
“We are confident that we
can keep them engaged up until
nationals because there’s still
more we want to achieve.”
CHRISTCHURCH will play
host to the indoor cricket club
nationals on Thursday.
It is the first time Christchurch
has held the tournament since
2008 and a record 40 teams have
entered across the grades.
The open men’s and under-21
boy’s grades will be played at the
refurbished Howzat Riccarton
site, while the premier men’s and
over-40 men’s will be played at
Action Indoor Sports Hornby.
Indoor Cricket New Zealand
chief executive Mark Cini said it
was a thrill for Christchurch to
host the tournament again.
He said the February 22, 2011,
earthquake had made hosting
events challenging and he saw it
as a positive step.
There will also be a Gold Coast
team in the over-40 competition
for a bit of a transtasman flavour.
There are Christchurch teams
throughout all the grades.
Games start on Thursday
PROMINENT Cantabrians
have given a mixed response to
the possible futuristic look of
Cathedral Square.
Plans for what the Square
could look like were released
by Regenerate Christchurch
yesterday after seven years of
debate and controversy over the
slow progress of the rebuild.
It includes three covered
pavilions, which would have
a “lattice-style” translucent
roof, which could host markets
and other events.
FUTURISTIC: Plans released yesterday show what Cathedral Square could look like.
The long-term vision, which is
estimated to cost between $60-
$80 million, aims to bring people
back into the area, through a
series of interconnected public
spaces.
The vision for the Square also
includes Cathedral Gardens
with trees and water features,
Post Office Place with events
and meeting spaces, and Library
areas.
A CON man who tells his
intended victims he will harm
their families if they don’t pay up
may face a bigger problem than
the law – gangs.
Police have received 19 complaints
from Christchurch people
targeted by the sinister scam. It
involves phone
calls and texts to
victims who are
told the caller is
from the Mongrel
Mob, Highway 61
or Black Power.
Pay up or your
family members, Greg
including elderly Newbold
parents, will be
attacked, the caller says.
But it appears the con man is
not connected to the gangs, just
using their names to put fear into
the intended victims.
Canterbury University criminologist
Greg Newbold said yesterday
the gangs would be “filthy”.
“All I can say is he’s got a death
wish,” he said.
“They will be absolutely p***ed
off. Anybody who impersonates
a gang member is committing a
serious crime against the gang.”
Prof Newbold said the perpetrator
could get a “hiding” for that
alone.
Convicted killer involved
in high speed smash
Female
• By Barry Clarke and Emily
O’Connell
A CONVICTED killer is back
behind bars after a spectacular
crash while allegedly fleeing
police.
John Oliver Jamieson’s Subaru
Forester crashed through the
Rolleston dog park fence on
Saturday.
A spear-like fence post
smashed through the window
screen narrowly missing a
woman in the passenger seat.
Miraculously Jamieson and the
woman were unhurt.
He had earlier been recorded
driving at 180km/h on State
Highway 1.
A cut-down rifle was later
found by police in the vehicle.
Startled dog walkers said
Jamieson ran a short distance
from the vehicle before stopping
to see if the woman in the vehicle
was okay.
Police arrived soon after and
he was apprehended.
Jamieson was one of six men
found guilty of the manslaughter
of Timaru man Wayne Kerry
Bray in 2009. Jamieson received
a nine-year jail sentence. He was
on bail for other charges at the
time of the attack on Mr Bray.
Mr Bray, 26, died four days
after he was punched, kicked and
stomped on in a Timaru street.
Mr Bray had walked past a
property where there had been a
party. There had been bad blood
5 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 1 living room | 1 dining room | 1 office/study | 2 car-garage | 3 off-street parks | Listing #BE193116
With story book charm and grand street
appeal this home was always designed
to impress and never more so than now,
with modern homes all beginning to look
the same. The wide front portico with its
black and white chequered floor opens
into an expansive entry area with polished
wood floors, white wood panelling and the
stairway to the upstairs rooms. Impeccably
updated interiors are tasteful and elegant.
The family living and dining spaces and
kitchen are nicely connected to the central
entrance area with a second formal living
room on the opposite side. Doors can be
flung open to create large flowing spaces
or closed off for a more cosy, intimate
feel. A central wood burner efficiently
heats all the spaces with the warm glow
of real flame. The designer kitchen, all
in warm tones of white with extra wide,
freestanding oven, fits perfectly with
the character of the home while adding
contemporary convenience. A butler’s
pantry helps keep mess to a minimum
and adds a ton of storage. Adjacent to the
dining room, there is a sizeable laundry
with a showering and wash area. The
communal spaces enjoy views over the
treetops and all day sun.
There are as many as six bedrooms,
one downstairs with an ensuite and the
others all upstairs along with the main
bathroom. From the upstairs rooms there
are lovely views over the city ensuring
something to capture the eye day or night.
This substantial family home affords the
flexibility to configure it to suit your needs
with plenty of options for families of all
shapes and sizes.
