As cocktail culture sweeps its way across the world from
rooftops bars in LA and Miami where everyone wants
to be seen, to speakeasies in the hidden back alleys of
Yangon and Phnom Penh, there are some of us who still
prefer a good glass of wine.
Celebrating that is Wine Spectator. The world’s leading
authority on wine, with over three million print magazine
readers worldwide, Wine Spectator has been recognising
restaurants with world’s best wine lists for more than 35 years.
Established in 1981, the 2018 Restaurant Awards has
three levels: Award of Excellence, Best of Award of Excellence
and the Grand Award. This year there were 2,453; 1,215; and
91 winners named in each category respectively, covering a
total of 3,759 restaurants in over 75 countries and territories
worldwide.
The awards represent everything from “neighbourhood
wine bars serving small plates to opulent palaces with star
chefs and elaborate tasting menus”, Wine Spectator’s Gillian
Sciaretta wrote in a recent web article for Wine Spectator.
Vetted by a panel of experts to be amongst the best in the
world, winners share one thing, “a passion for exploring and
sharing the world of wine, whether through eclectic flights
with a sense of fun or cellars laden with well-aged gems from
Burgundy and Bordeaux,” she continues.
