THE SWING
SWING
The game’s most beautiful swings
TEXT BY: REMI DUTTA
Football, or soccer (if you’re from North America), is described by its fans as “the beautiful
game”, but golf can be equally as beguiling. A powerful swing can be poetry in motion when
executed smoothly and with expert control.Of course, no two individual’s swings are alike,
though many budding players are prone to emulating others. Height, shape and general
physiology make a person’s swing highly personal.
When carefully studied, there are universal rules that apply to the biomechanics of a swing – this
is the law of tempo and the best swings obey a 3:1 rhythm ratio, regardless of the shape of the swing
or the time taken to execute it.
Essentially a golf swing can be broken down into several parts: the start of the swing as it draws
away from the ball; the top of the backswing; and the downswing as the club moves back towards the
ball in preparation for impact. It should take three counts to raise, regardless of speed.
Tom Watson and Nick Price were known to have rapid swings, while Inbee Park has a swing that
looks like it’s being rendered in thick syrupy treacle; it is characteristically slow. Yet they all play
incredibly great golf because their rhythm is within the 3:1 range. This also applies, whether your
swing in smooth or choppy. The only time this ratio does not apply is during putting, when the ratio
is 2:1, but that’s another story.
So, if this crucial 3: 1 ratio cornerstone dictates the success of a swing, then what makes one
player’s swing more attractive than another? Ultimately, it comes down to prevailing ideas and
highly personal tastes. Without further ado, here’s a short and subjective list of the professional
game’s most breathtakingly beautiful swings.
