Stefano Bartolini has directed the RSCAS since September 2006. He has taught at the <strong>University</strong><br />

of Bologna (1976 and 2004), the <strong>European</strong> <strong>University</strong> Institute (1979 and 1994), the <strong>University</strong><br />

of Florence (1985), the <strong>University</strong> of Trieste (1990), and the <strong>University</strong> of Geneva (1991). He was<br />

awarded the UNESCO Stein Rokkan Prize <strong>for</strong> the Social Sciences in 1990 and the Gregory Luebbert<br />

APSA Prize in Comparative Politics in 2001. His research interests have focused on Western<br />

<strong>European</strong> political development, comparative methodology, political institutions and <strong>European</strong><br />

integration. His most recent books include The Class Cleavage. The Electoral Mobilisation of the<br />

<strong>European</strong> Left 1880–1980 (Cambridge, 2000); Maggioritario finalmente? La transizione elettorale<br />

1994–2001 (Bologna, 2002) and Restructuring Europe. Centre Formation, System Building and Political<br />

Structuring between <strong>European</strong> Integration and the Nation State (Ox<strong>for</strong>d, 2005).<br />

FAculty<br />

Jean Blondel, professor emeritus at the EUI, won the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science 2004.<br />

He became professor of political science at the EUI in 1985 and was an external professor from<br />

1994 to 2000. He set up the Department of Government at the <strong>University</strong> of Essex in 1964 and<br />

co-founded the <strong>European</strong> Consortium of Political Research. His field is comparative politics. He<br />

was recently awarded honoris causa doctorates from the <strong>University</strong> of Macerata (2007) and the<br />

<strong>University</strong> of Siena (2008).<br />
