NEW SILVER Ferns assistant
coach Debbie Fuller credits
her upbringing in North New
Brighton as a fortunate place to
start her career.
The 47-year-old grew up in
North New Brighton and said
her first memory of netball
came watching her mother,
Claire Matoe, play at the Hagley
Park netball courts, play for
Canterbury and trial for the
Silver Ferns.
“I just remember how lucky I
was to grow up there,” she said.
“The beach was our haven,
I remember Thomson Park
and the skate park and New
Brighton Mall was humming on
a Saturday.
Eastgate
bus hub
one step
closer
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
EASTGATE MALL may have
the third busiest bus interchange
in the city, but it is still without
an integrated transport hub.
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board has supported a
recommendation from
the Linwood Eastgate Area
Integrated Transport Study to
have a bus hub installed outside
the centre.
Further action recommended
in the report included
investigating a signalised
crossing on Buckleys Rd
across from Eastgate Mall and
providing cycle parking facilities
outside the centre.
But the board wants to
understand how Environment
Canterbury’s recent changes to
bus routes as part of its Long
Term Plan will affect the area
before it goes ahead with the
plan. It has also requested a city
council and community board
joint seminar with ECan on the
Canterbury Regional Public
Transport Plan.
The transport plan, which
shapes the future of the bus services
in the city, is not expected
to be known until March.
WE’VE GOT a profile on that somewhat
controversial figure in David East (pages
6-7).
It ran in The Star (the big boy of our
newspaper stable) but it would have
been remiss not to also publish it in East’s
local paper.
City councillors and other politicians are often targets for the
media. In many cases it is totally justified.
I’m often heard around the office wondering why some public
figures won’t put their proverbials on the line when it comes to
significant community issues.
So it was refreshing when East and others put their heads out
of the trench over the District Plan matter that landed them in
hot water.
But it’s worked. There will be an independent inquiry over the
matter.
Community spirit triumphs
• By Sophie Cornish and Georgia
ACTION TAKEN to get a
missing clause back into the
city’s District Plan has been
applauded by the Southshore
Residents’ Association.
The city council
unanimously
voted and requested
urgency
on the matter
so that the
city’s District
Plan could be
David East
amended last
Thursday.
Councillor
David East landed himself in
hot water when he alleged the
omission of a discretionary rule
in the city council’s High Flood
Hazard Management Area
policy was against the intentions
of the replacement District Plan
independent hearing’s panel.
Without the discretionary
rule known as the enable clause
residents are finding it almost
impossible to build or extend
their properties within the High
Flood Hazard Management
Area,
Cr East and Burwood-Coastal
Community Board members
Tim Sintes and Kim Money
faced council disciplinary action
over their outspoken views.
A meeting with council chiefs
on Thursday to discuss the matter
was adjourned. Their stand,
though, led to huge support from
people in the eastern suburbs.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel who was
one of the instigators of the disciplinary
proceedings, has now
led an independent inquiry into
the omission of the discretionary
rule.
Southshore Residents’
Association chairwoman Lynda
Burdekin said the independent
inquiry was welcomed.
“It is not something that is
going to happen overnight. We
will be watching the process
with interest and hoping the
Government and city council get
something done promptly,” she
said.
Last Tuesday more than 300
people attended a public meeting
at the New Brighton Club.
They decided to support Cr
East, Mr Sintes’ and Ms Money’s
stand.
A motion passed at the meeting
fully supported their actions
and also stated the meeting
strongly objected to the code of
conduct complaints and request
they be withdrawn.
PROGRESS:
The Southshore
Residents
Association is
pleased a notice of
motion has been
made by the city
council to have a
missing clause in
the city’s district
plan put back in.
It also called for the
Christchurch Coastal
Residents’ United group to
write on its behalf jointly, to
the Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern, Minister of Local
Government Nanaia Mahuta
and Minister of the Greater
Christchurch Regeneration
Megan Woods.
The letter would advise that
they fully support the efforts of
the elected members and request
an independent inquiry and
subsequent reinstatement on the
relevant clause.
SECURITY REMINDER
Police are reminding the public
to securely lock and remove
valuables from their cars as the
weather begins to warm up. New
Brighton Senior Constable Shane
more people using the wetlands,
walkways and beaches as a result.
“If you are out and about make
sure your vehicles are parked
Thompson said police do tend
to notice a spike in car break- ins
over the summer.
RICHMOND MAINTENANCE
Council staff are continuing work
a clear understanding of the
the maintenance team have been
working closely together to ensure
that resources are maximised.
Maintenance work has been
carried out in the area including
clearing sumps, sweeping and
channel clearing. This has resulted
in reduced incidences of flooding
in Crystal, Randall, Petrie,
Warden, Dudley and Slater streets
in recent rain events. Staff are
working on the development of a
Red zone barrier changes for Burwood
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
ROAD BARRIERS making it
difficult to access Donnell Sports
Park in Burwood and causing
anti social behaviour issues in the
red zone will be changed.
The city council will take away
road barriers on Stour Drive and
Brooker Ave to make it easier for
the public to get to the park.
It will mean
people will be
able to travel
from New
Brighton Rd,
down Stour
Drive to Brooker
Glenn
Livingstone
Ave to get to
the park, as
well as from
Kingsbridge
Drive through to Brooker Ave.
But full barriers will be placed
at Prior Close, Istana Place,
Azure Place and Dunair Drive at
the Brooker Ave end.
This will be to stop illegal
rubbish dumping and boy racers
from destroying vegetation in
the red zone.
It was expected the barriers
would begin to be changed from
yesterday.
It comes after the Coastal
Burwood Community Board,
the Burwood East Residents’
Association and Land
BLOCK: Extended road barriers, like the one above, are being removed in streets around
Burwood to allow better access to Donnell Sports Park.
Information New Zealand met
recently to discuss ongoing
issues with the red zone barriers.
Pegasus Post reported in May
that BERA sent a letter to the
community board calling for
the placement of barriers to be
reviewed as a result of boy racers
doing burnouts in the red zone.
BERA committee member Sue
Roper said it was a productive
meeting and the group is pleased
because the changes it agreed on
will be going through.
“We are excited about the fact
people will now be able to have
freer access to Donnell Sports
Park especially now it is going to
be upgraded and fixed up,” she
said.
Funding of $600,000 has been
secured in the city council’s
Long Term Plan to upgrade the
park.
It was also agreed at the
meeting if further rubbish
dumping and illegal use of cars
on the street after dark were to
continue, the city council and
community board would review
the barriers again.
City councillor Glenn
Livingstone said it has been a
great collaborative effort because
it means the community can
take pride in the park.
He said due to the roads
opening in the area, it may mean
the city council will need to
consider fixing Brooker Ave in
the future.
Cr Livingstone said he is
considering promoting the idea
through the community board.
Controversial councillor’s
Coastal Ward city
councillor David East
landed himself in hot
water when he held
a press conference
calling for an
independent inquiry
into an erased clause in
the city’s District Plan.
He speaks to reporter
Sophie Cornish about
his life outside of local
politics
Where did your involvement
in the east all begin?
I am a fourth-generation
resident of the area. I was born
in the Burwood area, where my
parents farmed in horticulture.
When I got married, I moved
back into the area, so I have been
essentially back since 1980. But as
I said, my parents, grandparents
and great-grandparents on both
sides of the family all lived in the
North Beach or New Brighton
area. I live in North Beach now.
Where did you grow up?
I started at Burwood School,
then my father brought land on
Marshland Rd and farmed there.
So I grew up in a little place
called Ouruhia, at the top end of
Marshland Rd. I went to school
there, then went to Shirley Boys’
High School and Canterbury
University. I graduated with a
Bachelor of Science in geography
and geology.
I know you are a life member
of Surf Life Saving New
Zealand, when did you become
involved in that?
I have been a member of the
North Beach Surf Life Saving
Club since 1968. In fact, I
became a life member of North
Beach in 2000, a life member of
Canterbury in 2006 and New
Zealand in 2011. In a couple
of weeks time I am due to
receive a 50 year badge for my
this year.
What was your favourite
thing about surf lifesaving when
you were younger, were you a
strong swimmer?
Well, I was what I would call
a very average competitor. I was
always a reasonably strong swimmer.
But my involvement actually
gradually swung to the administration
side of things. I held most
positions on the committee at
North Beach, I ended up being
the club captain and president.
I have been president of the
Canterbury district and have had
quite a long involvement nationally
with a few committees. I’ve
been judging at the national
championships, I think this upcoming
championships will be
my 31st consecutive event that I
have judged nationally. I’ve been
to every surf lifesaving champs
since 1974, bar one. I missed the
1980 one when my daughter was
born.
What is your favourite thing
about it, do you like being on
the beach?
I love the beach, I love the
coastline. I’ve got so many
friends and associates in the
movement. Even going to a
national championship, it’s
as much catching up with old
friends as it is doing the judging.
Do you have any memorable
stories from your time
competing?
Yes, several. But most couldn’t
be printed. We had a lot of fun
and there have been a few hi-jinx,
but all good-natured.
What led you to start surf
lifesaving?
I was 16 and my family and
friends did it. My aunts and
uncles and to a degree my father,
were all members of the North
Beach club previously. There is
quite a significant family connection,
going way back. My
grandfather, aunts and uncles,
my sons, daughter and I, and
now my grandchildren, have an
association with the club.
What other things like this
are you involved with other
than surf lifesaving?
For a long period I was
involved with rugby when both
my sons were playing, they
played for the Shirley club. I
coached junior rugby for quite
a number of years, I was the
junior club captain there and
ended up being the chairman of
the board at Shirley rugby and
eventually president of the club. I
still maintain a very keen interest
in rugby for the club, provincial
and national levels. I went to the
Canterbury v Manawatu game
just recently.
What led you into local
government?
I think it’s ultimately
something that my family
have been involved with. My
parents, Colin and June, were
very community-minded. My
father was on a number of
boards around the country in
a horticultural context. He was
deeply involved in rotary, the
local Federated Farmers and all
sorts of things there. I am very
grateful for the way I was raised
by my parents. The sense of
community involvement
that was instilled in me and
giving back was something
that I have always carried on
with and am eternally grateful
to them for. Unfortunately,
neither of them are here, but I
am sure they would be totally
supportive and proud of where I
have got to.
So was the reason you
wanted to get involved in local
politics because of the family
connection?
Yes, that and I ended up on
the board of trustees at my
children’s school and eventually
became the chair of that. I
have naturally taken interest
in my community and what is
happening in the area and have
wanted to offer any help I can
to see the local community
flourish.
Tuesday September 18 2018 7
Local
News
Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
lifelong passion for the east
Is that what you believe is the
best thing about local politics?
Yes, I do get a lot of personal
sort of satisfaction of seeing
improvements in my local area. I
have always sort of believed that
if you have a vibrant community
with a lot of facilities, it looks
good, it feels good, people will be
responsive in the way they look
after the community and are
proud of where they live. That’s
the sort of philosophy I have tried
to work with.
Do you think there is a
different sense of community in
the Coastal Ward?
Yes, I have never come across a
community that is so connected
and interested in what happens
around them. The number
of residents’ associations and
community groups in my ward
is phenomenal. Compared
to some other parts of the
city, we would have far more
of these community groups.
You only have to look at the
reaction to some proposals for
the eastern suburbs and the
number of people who have
signed petitions, submissions
and things to council. In fact,
I’d go as far to say in 2015, the
volume of submissions received
from this side of town was quite
instrumental in council, in
changing their mind on aspects
of the Annual Plan that year.
What are some less desirable
aspects of local politics?
I’d say the worst thing is the
time and processes you have to
go through. Council never moves
very fast and while we can all see
the benefits of a particular project,
actually getting there is quite
complex and time-consuming.
People that have got into local
affairs have been burnt-out
because they haven’t been able
to work their way through some
of these processes. I have learnt
my way around council a bit and
have been able to promote things
POWER BROKERS: David East speaking to fellow city councillors Anne Galloway and Jamie
Gough at last week’s council meeting.
and get things on a priority list.
Whereas some people may get
elected to a community board
or council and think they are
going to come in with a big stick
and their ideas and notions will
be acted fairly quickly, when in
fact that is not the case. There is a
process, the process is not great,
but it is what it is and you just
have to work your way through
the system with some of these
projects. As you are well aware
sometimes you have to step out
of the square, like I am doing at
the moment, to progress things
that are of immense concern to
the community and are not being
acted on quickly or fairly.
What are some of the most
challenging things you have
faced in this role?
I have always held the notion
that New Brighton and the
eastern suburbs have been an
under-funded, under-appreciated
asset for the city. It’s taken a long
time to get some projects off the
ground. I am eternally grateful
that we now have a great playground
in New Brighton and
QE II has been rebuilt. Although
we have ongoing work there,
looking at whether the great
facility is going to be big enough
for the needs of this side of
town. We are working very well
through the consenting process
for the hot pools which is a project
first mooted way back in the
1880s.
You have not strayed away
from things that may be
controversial like the debate
last year about donating
director’s fees to charity, did you
face much fall-out from that?
I was pretty principle on
that matter. In fact, I followed
council’s directive to the letter
of the law, the ruling was that
anyone who had directorships
that involved Christchurch City
Holdings Ltd, the fees would be
directed to the Mayor’s Welfare
Fund. I was a director of Canterbury
Development Corporation
and my fees went to that fund.
But, at the same time, I was a director
of Transwaste Canterbury
who was not a member CCHL.
I felt I was quite entitled. While
other councillors would argue
no, but in an interpretation of
council’s ruling of the matter, I
kept the fees and I would be quite
happy to publicly say that if you
do that sort of work you should
be remunerated for it. There
are huge responsibilities being
a director and I think that the
position council takes is wrong, I
would take the same stand again.
In the long term, I would hope
that the attitudes to this practice
are better reflected in the future.
Can you tell me something
about the life of a city councillor
that people might not know?
It is quite a demanding sort of
lifestyle and it can be easy as you
want and as complex as you want.
I choose to attend quite a number
of local community events, local
committees and things so
that I hope I am up to the play
with what is happening in my
community. I don’t necessarily
have to do that, I could be just
attending council meetings and
community board meetings and
not a lot more. From a relationship
sort of view I am out at night
sometimes three to five nights
a week, so that has an impact. I
have to say, I exceedingly grateful
that my partner Lynn is very supportive
of what I do, even though
at times it’s not the greatest thing
in a normal relationship.
Is Lynn involved in local
government?
She is involved in a number of
community and social enterprise
activities. She is very supportive
and takes an interest in a number
of community groups.
Can you tell me about your
children?
I have a daughter and two sons.
Well, I had four children. My second
daughter died at eight weeks,
a long time ago. My daughter is
Sarah and sons Jamie and Bid.
Do they want to get into local
politics?
No, not at this stage. They may
do, certainly I am not encouraging
them too, it’s something
they need to assess and get into
themselves, rather than me
leading them towards it. My son
Jamie was club captain at the
surf club for a long time and in
recent months, he has become
the president.
Grab your girlfriends, mum or daughters
and come have a great day out!
Silver Ferns
assistant
coach’s east
side roots
•From page 1
She retired from international
play following the 1996 world
championships, but played
provincially until 2002 before
coaching became her focus.
Fuller started coaching in
Wellington and Bay of Plenty. Her
first notable job was as defensive
coach of the Northern Mystics
during the ANZ Championship in
2009 under head coach Te Aroha
Keenan.
She was promoted to assistant
the next year before cementing
the head coaching job in 2011.
The Mystics finished second
during her first season in charge,
and third in 2012. Fuller took
2013 off due to family commitments,
before returning to the
helm and continuing until 2016.
Fuller said it was emotional
when she was welcomed into the
Silver Ferns group. “The players
did a Mihi Whakatau to welcome
the new coaching staff and I still
get emotional thinking about it.
“I never thought when I started
coaching it would lead to this but
I love seeing players grow and
I know this group of players is
eager to do well,” she said.
“We need to know what the
bus routes are before we make
Yani Johanson
But he said he
was supportive
of an integrated plan.
Cr Johanson said it would be
“bizarre” for the city council
to invest in public transport
infrastructure when ECan will
discontinue bus routes 145 and
535 travelling to Eastgate next
month. Instead a shopper service,
the 155, will be introduced
in the south-east of the city,
running between Lyttelton and
Eastgate via Ferrymead.
The bus stops in front of
Eastgate cater up to 30 buses
per hour and board up to 1500
passengers per day.
The usage of buses in the area
rivals Northlands Shopping Centre
and is only outdone by the
central city Bus Interchange and
Westfield Riccarton hub.
On average 84 buses use the
bus interchange per hour, 67 at
Westfield Riccarton and 45 at
Northlands Shopping Centre.
The average week day boarding
of passengers at the Bus
Interchange is 7130, Westfield
Riccarton 3060 and Northlands
is 1820.
A city council staff report said
it is widely acknowledged that
passenger facilities at Eastgate
are inadequate and in need of
improvement.
But the city council’s Long
Term Plan has no provision for a
transport hub or any other projects
suggested in the study.
City council staff believe
funding from the Aldwins Rd,
Buckleys Rd and Linwood Ave
intersection safety project could
be used for the upgrade of the
Buckleys Rd bus stop.
Sue Davidson
TE KURA Tawhito
on the former
central New
Brighton School site
is growing into an Sylvia Smyth
amazing community hub.
Renew Brighton was offered
the site after it closed as a school
and while it goes through the
public works disposal process.
We felt our community needed
an opportunity to re-imagine the
site and to turn it from a place of
loss to a place of hope.
Fast forward to a year since
opening and Te Kura Tawhito
has become a bustling health,
well-being and creativity hub.
The site now sees over 700
visitors per month.
We have more than 20 groups
and artists occupying the space
– from classes on how to sew
sandwich bags, to supporting
TOP WORK: Te Kura Tawhito client service co-ordinator Sieni Afamiliona, Pregnancy Help
Canterbury manager Dahlia Xander and mother Rachel Warwick with her baby.
new mothers, growing vegetables
for the community fridge, and
weaving harakeke – the site is
abuzz with people and energy.
It’s all about people!
We receive weekly inquiries
from community organisations,
artist and many others alike, all
wanting to occupy a space.
In the last month we have
opened the art room, a space set
up specifically for people to be
able to drop in and offer their
classes.
Get in touch with co-ordinator
Sue Davidson, if you are keen.
We at Renew Brighton are
ready to expand what we can
offer at Te Kura Tawhito.
However, we’re waiting to hear
if the plans are to sell the site on
the open market, or whether we
can remain.
There is so much evidence on
how creativity positively impacts
our health and well-being and
we hope to be able to continue to
offer this for our community.
In an ideal world, we hope
to soon be sitting around a
large table talking to likely
stakeholders about the future of
the old Central New Brighton
School site – Te Kura Tawhito.
PEGASUS POST
Anxiety and breathing
– are they related?
When good breathing goes bad
Have you experienced any of these
breathing difficulty symptoms?
• Disturbed sleep
• Erratic heartbeats*
• Feeling anxious and uptight
• Upset gut/nausea
• Chest pains*
• Shattered confidence
• Tired all the time
• Achy muscles and joints
• Dizzy spells* or feeling spaced out
• Irritability or hypervigilance
• Frequent yawning and sighing
• Breathing discomfort*
• Pins and needles
• Feelings of ‘air hunger’
*Check with your doctor if you experience
these symptoms.
These questions are asked on
the website www.BradCliff.com.
BradCliff was started by North Island
physiotherapists Dinah Bradley and
Tania Cliffton Smith, who specialise in
hyperventilation and anxiety treatment.
Their website notes one in 10 people
experience some form of breathing pattern
disorder or chronic over breathing at some
time in their lives, resulting in a range
of disturbing or frightening symptoms
puzzling to you and your doctor.
You feel unwell because of overbreathing,
and overbreathing makes you feel unwell.
A vicious cycle is established, which is a
major stress all by itself. This is experienced
currently by many Cantabrians, says Ietje
van Stolk of Physical Sense Gym & Physio.
As she explains, it is normal to breathe fast
and in the upper chest when we are in danger
and fight or flight is needed. We know all
about that here, due to the earthquakes.
Normally, once the danger is gone, our
breathing should restore itself within a
couple of days. We would then be using the
diaphragm for our normal nonstressed
breathing. We have been having a hard
time restoring our breathing pattern
here in Canterbury because every time
our body tried to achieve that, the next
aftershock came rolling in. Even though the
aftershocks have significantly diminished,
some people’s fight or flight mode
breathing has become chronic, or habitual,
Ietje says. And, as she points out, using the
wrong muscles for breathing means these
overworked muscles cause headaches, neck
pain and jaw pain.
With fast upper chest breathing, sighing
and yawning, the resulting disturbance
of our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels
can give us the feeling we are not able to
control our own body. One moment you
are feeling fine, next moment your chest
feels tight, you feel out of breath, your
heart beats erratically and you may even
experience dizziness and/or tingling.
Very scary if you do not understand what
is happening. No wonder this causes
anxiety. Not being the boss over our own
body makes us anxious, anxiety feeds the
faulty breathing pattern, and so it goes on.
The BradCliff physiotherapists have
established a national network of
practitioners that regularly train together
and can help you overcome this problem.
Physical Sense is part of that network.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door and there is ample
parking. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
Linwood
College
PERSONALISED
PATHWAYS
TO SUCCESS
A NEW SCHOOL IS COMING
We are making it yours
Linwood College is undergoing some major changes. During this time a number of things will be happening as part of this transition into our new school buildings so we want to let
you know about our plans and processes.
• While our school is being rebuilt, Linwood College will temporarily relocate to the existing Avonside Girls' High School site.
• We are organising a farewell celebration for current and ex students of Linwood College to farewell the current buildings.
• Staff are focusing on teaching and learning that allows for students to collaborate, supports engagement and meets the individual needs of our current and future students -
personalised learning.
REBUILD INFORMATION
What’s been happening so far?
Workshops around the physical buildings have been occurring. These have included
staff from each learning area, Architectus - our architects, Mana Whenua and the
Linwood College rebuild team. Your community consultation feedback has fed into the
design of the physical teaching spaces and how the buildings will be positioned on
the physical site. Within our design we have ensured that the teaching spaces are for
30 students maximum with the ability to open up to a teaching space for 60 students
if and when appropriate. We also have smaller spaces for students to work. We want
to be able to encourage collaboration but ensure students are not lost in big open
spaces. High level design meetings occur fortnightly. These meetings look at logistics:
finances, structural and engineering considerations, geotechnical considerations, gas,
water, heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting. The Project Steering Group meets on a
monthly basis. This is when the Ministry of Education and the Linwood College Board
meet, making sure that what is being planned for is actually what the school and the
community are wanting.
Where we are now...
We now have a final site plan completed, and the final outside cladding of the new
buildings has been decided. We are coming to the end of the design phase of the
internal structures, and the individual classroom teaching spaces within the Learning
Hubs and the Innovation and Creativity buildings. A transition manager has been
appointed to oversee the shift to the Avonside Girls’ current site.
Where to next?
We are now looking at developing the landscaping designs that will surround the
buildings. We will be starting to look at internal fixtures and fittings, including flooring,
furniture and fabric finishes within the learning spaces. IT consultation is occurring to
plan the wireless connectivity within the buildings. There is planning about the closure
of the current Linwood College buildings including the Whare and the number of
significant memorials on site.
SAYING GOODBYE TO THE OLD LINWOOD COLLEGE BUILDINGS
As part of preparing for the demolition and complete rebuild of Linwood College, we are
organising a farewell celebration weekend. This will be over the weekend of April 5 & 6
2019. There will be a formal ticketed event on the Friday evening for past students and
teachers followed on the Saturday with a day of farewell open to all current and past
students and staff, and the wider community who would like to join us. This will also
include the closing of the Whare and acknowledging the other significant memorials
around Linwood College. We are remembering and celebrating the rich history that has
occurred in these buildings over the years.
Linda Rutland is chairing the organising committee for this event and is now
taking pre-registrations for the ticketed evening on registration@linwoodcollege.
school.nz. Queries to Linda 021 2398946 or Ken Bye 027 748 0697.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
At Linwood College we are committed to providing personalised pathways for students
to succeed. We are working on developing teaching and learning practices that develop
collaboration between both teachers and students. For us, this doesn’t mean having
everybody in an open space trying to work, but rather more structured environments
where both students and teachers can be successful. For example, at the moment our
year 10 and year 12 Physical Education classes work in partnership with the teachers
planning together.
AVONSIDE GIRLS’ HIGH SITE TRANSITION
WHY DO WE NEED TO RELOCATE?
By relocating for the period of the rebuild, the rebuild will occur faster as the
construction team will not have to work around us. Our students will not have to
do their learning in a building site. Because the timeframe will be shorter, Linwood
College can use the money saved to reinvest into the new school buildings.
WHEN WILL IT HAppEN?
Linwood College will be relocating to the old Avonside Girls’ High School site once
AGHS have moved to their new school on the QE2 site. This will be occurring
sometime in term 2 2019. A transition manager has been allocated by the Ministry
of Education to facilitate this shift, and to ensure that this does not disrupt the day
to day running of the school over this period.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE STUDENTS?
It means that our Linwood College staff and students won't have to continue
learning in a construction site. It means that once we have relocated, there will be
little to no disruption until we shift back. Our students will still be able to participate
in sport, major productions and all the other opportunities that Linwood College
currently offers.
CAN I ENROL MY CHILD AT LINWOOD COLLEGE DURING THIS TIME?
Yes you most certainly can. Just contact our Linwood College office on
(03) 9802100 or email office@linwoodcollege.school.nz for enrolment forms and to
arrange an enrolment interview. We will continue to warmly welcome new students
during this transition time.
HOW WILL I GET THERE?
AGHS is only 2.2 kms away from the original Linwood College site. The Ministry
of Education will supply buses from the original Aldwins Road Linwood site to the
Avonside site for the duration of the rebuild. This will be a free service, and will
leave LC to get to Avonside by the start of school, and will leave Avonside at the
end of the day to return to Linwood.
The tree of LIFE
New research on Gingko
Biloba excites researchers!
For decades scientists believed brain
damage with age, after a stroke or injury
was irreversible and brain neurons could
not be repaired. In more recent times,
new research has shown that neurons
can grow back with the right conditions
and that a special extract of Gingko
Biloba (EGb-761 or TEBONIN) has
been clinically found to assist in this.
The implications for stroke recovery are
obvious, but researchers also know many
of us suffer from undetected “microstrokes”
that over a period of time slowly
reduce our cognitive function. TEBONIN
is prescribed worldwide as a natural
supportive agent for a healthy brain and
cognitive function. It supports healthy
mental performance, concentration, focus,
alertness, motor function and to help
with many conditions including tinnitus
(ringing and noise in the ears), vertigo
and normal balance. TEBONIN improves
micro-circulation and helps the blood
flow reach those critical places it needs to
get. It is a potent anti-oxidant and makes
the red blood cells more pliable and
capillary walls more flexible.
TEBONIN is one of the most widely
studied and researched herbal products in
the world and is the only Ginkgo biloba
extract manufactured via a patented
multi-step extraction process. Each small
tablet contains a highly concentrated
50:1 extract to give you a therapeutic
clinical dose without having to take a large
amount of the herb. Of 25 Gingko biloba
products on the market, and tested by a
major medical journal, only TEBONIN
passed all five of the test requirements.
Ten brands didn’t meet any requirements
and the rest didn’t pass more than three
out of five requirements. TEBONIN is
the only Gingko biloba extract shown
to activated all areas of the brain and is
considered the gold standard in Gingko.
TEBONIN has been trusted by millions
of consumers worldwide for over 30
years with more than 8,000,000 tablets
consumed each day.
TEBONIN and further information
is available from the Natural Health
