From September 28th to October 28th it’s the eighth edition of the Brighton Photo Biennial (‘Britain’s leading curated photo festival’) with free events throughout the city. The 2018 theme is ‘A New Europe’. Artists include Tereza Cervenová, charting life since the Brexit referendum, and Émeric Lhuisset & Harley Weir, looking at the ongoing migrant crisis. There’s also, of course, the BPB’s shadow festival, the Brighton Photo Fringe, another trail of exhibitions, of a less curated nature, over the same period. They’ve chosen Les Monaghan as this year’s open submission winner. The Dynamite Gallery are focussing on a couple of photographers from 28th September to 9th October: Maria Sullivan, who majors in photographing water, and Caroline Bloor, whose work has an impressionistic feel to it. We’d also like to give a heads up about an exhibition of photographs from The Source, which hit the streets in 1998, and, while it folded back in 2014, has continued as a webmag. Featured photographers include the likes of Kevin Meredith, Kenny McCracken and Kevin Mason; on throughout the festival at the North Laine Brewhouse. Last month we mentioned Snailspace, a Martlets Hospice fundraiser, which sees 50 giant snails, decorated by 50 artists scattered around the city (like the Snowdogs of 2016, only slimier). This event will continue until 18th November: look out for a snail daubed by Brighton-based artistcartoonist David Shrigley, 2018 Festival Guest Director (and Viva cover artist). Also look out for the orangefleeced Route Masters - volunteers there to give you more information about the project. Husband and wife Charlie and Tori Day have a joint show at 35 North (11th Oct - 3rd Nov), There Must Be a Song that doesn’t Remind Me of You. He paints St Ives Group-influenced landscapes, she reproduces album covers in watercolour. And over in Hove, check out Cameron Contemporary Art for solo exhibitions of the portraits of Victoria Kiff (pictured, 5th- 22nd) and Kevin Hendley (see pg 60, 27th Oct - 18th Nov). Phoenix Brighton are offering art lovers a Phoenix Friends deal. If you pay a fee of £35 – which goes to the running of this not-for-profit organisation – you gain access to monthly events hosted by some of the 120-or-so artists based in the building, including studio tours, curated tours, printmaking demonstrations and more.
