Charlotte’s Cupboard
Plastic-free mobile grocer
This is Peggy, our 100% electric van.
Charlotte’s Cupboard is the UK’s first
packaging-free shop on wheels, and we also have
a plastic-free delivery service. We all know we
have a big problem with plastic waste and we
wanted to give people the choice of being kind
to the planet whilst still offering a convenient
way to shop. We sell everything you need for
your weekly grocery shop except for perishable
items. My business partner Thalassa and I both
get everything we need from the van, adding
fresh fruit and veg.
We have stationary pitches at Florence Road
Market, as well as markets in Burgess Hill,
Lewes, Hassocks, Forest Row and Cuckfield,
and we deliver to 30 towns from Worthing, to
Henfield, to Chailey in addition to Brighton &
Hove. Most of the time it’s me going door-todoor
in Peggy, but Zedify do our home deliveries
in the centre of Brighton on their zero-emission
bikes. They fit with our ethos.
You shop on a refill basis and bring your own
containers. You can bring anything. People
bring pillow cases, nappy sacks, jam jars… It
really doesn’t matter. We refill your container
and you’re charged by weight. You can buy any
quantity you like, no matter how small. If you
choose home-delivery then your goods come in
paper bags in a cardboard crate which you return
when we next deliver so that we can reuse them
in your future deliveries. It’s closing the loop on
packaging, so nothing is thrown away.
