THE BEST sporting talent<br />

at Shirley Boys’ High was<br />

celebrated on Wednesday<br />

at the school’s annual<br />

awards night at the New<br />

Brighton Club.<br />

Volleyballer Troy<br />

Hulston was the big<br />

winner. He walked away<br />

with the individual of<br />

the year trophy and was<br />

named overall sportsman<br />

of the year.<br />

Troy was the vicecaptain<br />

of the New<br />

Zealand under-18<br />

volleyball team that<br />

travelled to Iran for the<br />

Asian championships<br />

in July where the team<br />

finished 14th.<br />

Troy is also captain of<br />

the South Island champion<br />

SBHS senior A volleyball<br />

team and will return next<br />

year to try and improve<br />

on the team’s national<br />

ranking of eighth.<br />

That ranking earned<br />

them team of the year at<br />

the awards night.<br />

In beach volleyball,<br />

Troy and his SBHS<br />

partner, Amison Valavala,<br />

took out the Canterbury<br />

under-19 championships<br />

convincingly.<br />

Together they have been<br />

included in the Canterbury<br />

team that is working<br />

towards the national age<br />

group champs in February<br />

and will represent SBHS<br />

at the national beach<br />

championships later that<br />

month.<br />

Uriah Tuli won the<br />

Petrie Cup for all-rounder<br />

of the year.<br />

The year 11 student<br />

was an integral part of<br />

the under-15 SBHS rugby<br />

team that won their<br />

metropolitan competition<br />

and the South Island<br />

tournament.<br />

He was selected for the<br />

under-15 Canterbury<br />

Metro rugby team.<br />

In rugby league, Uriah<br />

was part of the Linwood<br />

Keas club team that won<br />

the under-16 Canterbury<br />

competition, and he<br />

received the player of the<br />

year award.<br />

Uriah is in both the<br />

Canterbury and South<br />

Island under-16 league<br />

teams, as well as the<br />

New Zealand under-16<br />

squad. He is part of the<br />

New Zealand Warriors<br />

junior training group<br />

and has been commuting<br />

to Auckland to attend<br />

training camps.<br />

He was also part of the<br />

senior A netball team.<br />

Quinn Andis was named<br />

junior individual<br />

sportsman of the<br />

year.<br />

The year 11<br />

student won the<br />

junior long jump,<br />

was second in the<br />

discus and third<br />

in the 200m at<br />

the South Island<br />

secondary schools<br />

championships in<br />

Timaru.<br />

These results<br />

booked Quinn a<br />

spot at nationals in<br />

November.<br />

Quinn recently<br />

competed in<br />

the Down<br />

Under athletics<br />

championships<br />

on the Gold Coast<br />

where he won the<br />

discuss, shot put and<br />

long jump in the<br />

under-15 category.<br />

He was also<br />

a part of the<br />

championship-winning<br />

4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay<br />

teams.<br />

Quinn was also<br />

part of the victorious<br />

SBHS under-15 rugby<br />

team, scoring 15 tries<br />

throughout the season.<br />

He won the school crosscountry<br />

too.<br />

As the weather gets warmer and the<br />

evenings get longer it is the ideal time to<br />

get out of the house and learn something<br />

new and meet some new people by taking<br />

part in one of the wide range of nightclasses<br />

on offer at Papanui High School for Term 4<br />

beginning from Tuesday 23 <strong>October</strong>.<br />

age or interest you will find something<br />

to tempt you. Classes at Papanui High<br />

School are held in a warm, friendly relaxed<br />

environment and our tutors are supportive<br />

and well qualified in their chosen fields.<br />

One of our new courses on offer for Term<br />

4 is an introductory course in Traditional<br />

Chinese Massage (Tui-na). Traditional<br />

Chinese Massage is part of Traditional<br />

Chinese Medicine (TCM) and this course<br />

will cover Therapeutic Acupressure<br />

Massage using Traditional Chinese<br />

Medicine and practice. You will learn the<br />

efficacy of acupuncture points, how to<br />

find the correct acupuncture points and<br />

how to use these points to relieve and treat<br />

pain along with learning different massage<br />

techniques. This course is being taught by<br />

Chuhua Gao and will be held at Papanui<br />

High School on a Tuesday night 7-8 pm for<br />

6 weeks starting on 23 <strong>October</strong> at a cost of<br />

$80.<br />
