Flying fox may get new home

A CONTROVERSIAL flying
fox removed from a playground
in the Prestons Park subdivision
for being too noisy could be reinstalled
at Marshland Domain.
The domain has been
determined as the best location
by city council staff for the flying
fox, which was formerly located
at Muka Park.
It comes after the flying
fox was removed at a cost of
$20,000 after
neighbours
complained
to the city
council.
It divided the
neighbourhood
with a

petition of 488
signatures in
support of keeping the flying fox
at Muka Park presented to the
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board last year.
City council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge said
Marshland Domain has suitable
separation from neighbouring
properties and is in close
proximity to Muka Park.
He said it looked at other
nearby parks and Marshland
School as options. It is estimated
the cost would be $30,000 to reinstall
the flying fox.
The cost estimate includes
building a mound, platform,
posts for the cable, landscaping,
earthworks and a playground
soft fall.
A community board report
said funding is available in the
Long Term Plan to install the
flying fox between 2020 and
2021.
But Mr Rutledge said the cost
would need to be assessed when
funding is made available.
Community board deputy
chairman Tim Sintes said
Marshland Domain is only a
suggestion and residents have
got to be advised if it is going to
be built there.
“Hopefully we can learn by
our mistakes and we don’t repeat
what we did last time,” he said.

When the funding is
confirmed, the city council will
check in with the community
to see if it is in support of the
project and the location for the
flying fox.
The flying fox is currently in
storage.
Prestons Park resident Alun
Davies said if the city council is
looking to do something positive
for the community, it should
spend money to make Muka
Park into a “decent park”.
“For a playground in a big
development it is basically
useless now. There is nothing
there for the kids now,” he said.

The New Zealand Transport
Agency has agreed to the
reinstatement of fronds on
the Anzac Bridge on certain
conditions. A report presented
to the Coastal -Burwood
Community Board yesterday said
currently no funding has been
allocated to re installing the fronds
and therefore no time frame for
their installation was available.
PARK MAINTENANCE
Park maintenance in the
Burwood and coastal area will
increase this month and the next
as warmer weather is activating
new growth on turf and gardens.

border put in place this week to
the reduce sound from bouncing
balls on the hard surface court.
The Wainoni Park stormwater
basin is also due for planting of
riparian plants and trees.

The Papanui-Innes Community
Board with the newly-formed
Richmond Residents’ and Business
Association will be holding a
community meeting today at the
Shirley Primary School at 5.30pm.
City council transportation staff
will be there to discuss upcoming
roading projects in the area.
