12 | October 4, 2018 | The Homer Horizon news homerhorizon.com Woman’s Club announces veteran pancake breakfast Submitted by Homer Glen Junior Woman’s Club The Homer Glen Junior Woman’s Club will host a pancake breakfast to honor veterans from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Lockport VFW Post 5788. The post is located at 1026 E. 9th St. in Lockport. Breakfast will be free to all veterans, including one guest; each additional guest will cost $3. Children ages 5 and under will also be free. On the menu for the morning will be pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, milk and sweets. Guests will also have the opportunity to write a thank you note to be delivered to deployed members of the military, and a coloring table will be available for children. All in attendance will be entered into a raffle to win door prizes, as well. The HGJWC consists of local women interested in enhancing the community through friendship, volunteerism and service and looks forward to a successful breakfast paying homage to local veterans. Petitions to run for library trustee in April election now available Submitted by Homer Township Public Library Petitions for the Consolidated Election this upcoming April 2 for the Homer Township Public Library Board of Trustees were made available for circulation on Sept. 18 at the library, which is located at 14320 W. 151st St. in Homer Glen. The petitions are available between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Positions up for election are three regular board seats having four-year terms, and one unexpired board seat that is a two-year term. Petitions must be received no earlier than Monday, Dec. 10 and no later than Monday, Dec. 17. Positions on the ballot are determined by time and receipt of petitions. Should more than one petition be filed at the same time by mail or in person at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 17, a lottery to determine ballot order will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26. Visit us online at homerhorizon.com FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION Large retail showroom proposed in Tinley Park industrial park One of the country’s largest plumbing and building supplies wholesalers is preparing to develop a 32,458-square-foot space to open a showroom, sales center and warehouse in Tinley Park. Virginia-based Ferguson Enterprises petitioned the Village for approval of a special use permit to operate a new business at 7950 W. 185th St. in the office and restricted industrial Hickory Creek planned unit development zoning district. Proposed plans include a 10,494-square-foot showroom for bath, kitchen, plumbing and lighting supplies, as well select appliances, with 3,148 square feet of space utilized as a sales and will-call pickup center for its product lines. The search led to a “felony amount” of cannabis weighing “nearly a pound,” a “small quantity” of Ecstasy (MDMA) and “numerous” items of drug paraphernalia, such as scales and packaging equipment, along with cash proceeds, police said. Police also reportedly found in a bedroom of the home a “clandestine lab” in which suspected DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, a Schedule I controlled substance) was in “various stages of manufacture and production,” according to the release. Twenty-two jars of the product and other chemicals used in manufacturing were removed from the home, police said. In my opinion, the greatest holiday is Halloween. Ever since I was a child, Halloween was the time of year when my family would go all out on decorations inside and outside. That was something we took very seriously, as we wanted to be the best decorated house on the culde-sac. And of course, how could you forget dressing up? Needless to say, it has and still is my favorite time of year. As I got older, I finally started going to haunted houses to experience even more terror. It always gives me an adrenaline rush right before I head into a haunted house and prepare myself for what’s to come. There’s nothing better than not knowing what to expect and being caught off guard when a “monster” jumps out at you, and you scream and grab on to your loved ones who are with you. It’s the biggest thrill to me and I can’t decide anything better to do. On Page 3, you can read about two haunted houses in Lockport designed by an LTHS grad that are opening once again for the season with their new additions this year. If you love getting scared and love embracing the Halloween spirit, this is just one of many activities you can do during October. What better way is there to spend your weekend? I for one can’t wait to start exploring all the Halloween attractions near where I live and enjoying the holiday. I encourage all of you to take advantage of everything around you to enjoy the most wonderful time of the year.
