From the Assistant Editor
The most wonderful time of the year
Jacquelyn Schlabach
j.schlabach@22ndcenturymedia.com
... is not Christmas. In my
opinion, the greatest holiday
is Halloween. Ever since
I was a child, Halloween
was the time of year when
my family would go all out
on decorations inside and
outside. That was something
we took very seriously, as
we wanted to be the best
decorated house on the culde-sac.
And of course, how
could you forget dressing
up? Needless to say, it has
and still is my favorite time
of year.
As I got older, I finally
started going to haunted
houses to experience even
more terror.
It always gives me an
adrenaline rush right before
I head into a haunted house
and prepare myself for
what’s to come. There’s
nothing better than not
knowing what to expect
and being caught off guard
when a “monster” jumps
out at you, and you scream
and grab on to your loved
ones who are with you. It’s
the biggest thrill to me and I
can’t decide anything better
to do.
On Page 3, you can read
about two haunted houses
in Lockport designed by an
LTHS grad that are opening
once again for the season
with their new additions
this year. If you love getting
scared and love embracing
the Halloween spirit, this is
just one of many activities
you can do during October.
What better way is there
to spend your weekend? I
for one can’t wait to start
exploring all the Halloween
attractions near where I live
and enjoying the holiday.
I encourage all of you to
take advantage of everything
around you to enjoy
the most wonderful time of
the year.
I know I sure will.
Letters to the Editor
Dear editor,
It’s time to put on your running/walking
shoes and show
your patriotic spirit, as the
Mike Hike 5K Run/Walk is
back!
The Mike Hike is a magnificent
event that pays tribute
to fallen soldier Michael
C. Olivieri and all the brave
men and women who serve.
A moving tribute to Purple
Hearts may cause a tear, but
the overall atmosphere of
community spirit and national
pride leaves all who attend
feeling grateful and inspired.
Proceeds from the event
help support our troops and
trails. This past year, we were
able to fund the installation
of mile markers along the
Homer Glen Heroes Trail.
Now, trail users can track
their distance and summon
help from first responders, if
needed. We are now raising
money to establish a Veterans
Plaza within Heritage Park.
There are so many ways
your readers can support the
Mike Hike and our fundraising
goals:
• Run in the 5K — A new
race route and chip timing
make this USA Track
& Field-certified and -sanctioned
event Homer Glen’s
premier 5K.
• Walk the neighborhood
— Not a runner? Then sign
up for the walk and hike
through the neighborhood
Olivieri called home.
• Run virtually — Busy on
race day? Then sign up for
the Mike Hike virtual run.
Run a 5K on your own time
(you can even run the official
Mike Hike route seen
on our website) and send in
your time to receive your finisher’s
dog tag.
BE SMART. ADVERTISE IN
CONTACT
• Be a sponsor — One of
the patriotic highlights of the
Mike Hike is the long line
of American flags lining the
race route. Sponsored by local
businesses, organizations
and families, it as a spectacular
sight.
• Recruit your family and
friends — Participating is
always more fun when surrounded
by your family,
friends and neighbors. Convince
them to sign up and
have a friendly competition
of your own, or enjoy a fall
walk together.
• Donate — If none of the
above work for you, we will
always accept donations to
help us achieve our goals.
I want to let all your readers
know the deadline to receive
a FREE Mike Hike T-
shirt has been extended until
Oct. 7. So please go to www.
mikehike5k.com to learn all
the details and sign up for this
wonderful event.
