homerhorizon.com news the Homer Horizon | October 4, 2018 | 3 LTHS grad brings creative ideas to haunted houses for new season Jacquelyn Schlabach Assistant Editor Halloween is a time when children dress up as their favorite superheroes, villains, TV show characters and even their favorite animals, trick-or-treating from door to door with the hopes of getting as much candy as possible. As children, it’s something to look forward to and get excited for because for just one day everyone is playing dress up. Not to be forgotten is the opportunity for adults to join in on the fun and channel their inner child, whether it be dressing up in costume or entering into a world where playing pretend is acceptable. This is exactly what Lockport Township High School graduate John LaFlamboy has kept in mind over the last 20 years as the owner of Zombie Army Productions that designs and produces two haunted houses in Lockport. Thursday, Oct. 4 is the opening date for both Hells- Gate Haunted House and Statesville Haunted Prison & City of the Dead, bringing new scares to all thrill-seekers that dare to go through them. “It’s that little thing where I always say, ‘Don’t grow up too fast, don’t let go of the inner child, you know, hold on to those things,’” LaFlamboy said. “The world can sometimes grind it away from you so fast, and Halloween is this great little time of the year where as adults, we’re all given permission to play like children.” HellsGate Haunted House Now entering into its third season, HellsGate brings a different meaning to the term haunted house. LaFlamboy brought HellsGate to life with the intention of providing an adventure for all those who enter it. “It is markedly different than any other haunted house in the state, in the region, the country,” he said. “We leave it our tagline, ‘HellsGate is more than just a haunted house, it’s an adventure,’ and I mean that. The way the whole show is designed is to take you on a physical adventure.” LaFlamboy’s rendition of the popular 1980’s Hells- Gate Haunted House, which closed in the early ‘90s, features many of the same iconic attractions but with his own twist. Back in the day, that haunted house was known as the one that would give customers their money back if they made it all the way through. “The haunted house that started all the stories back then, if I could bring it back and have fun with that, and create that world again but Zombie Army Productions style, we just thought that would be a great challenge for the company, and we honestly thought the market wanted it,” LaFlamboy said. “Literally, the customers were looking for that haunted house, so we figured we’d build it for them.” HellsGate Haunted House is currently ranked the 11thscariest haunted house in the world by Hauntworld.com, which according to LaFlamboy is the No. 1 haunted house website that promotes the haunted house industry by sharing what attractions people should visit. “It’s a different kind of success for us; we’re very proud of it,” LaFlamboy said. The 40-minute adventure starts at the Metra lot in downtown Lockport where customers park and are then bused five minutes down the dark Statesville Haunted Prison and City of the Dead in Lockport, designed by LTHS grad John LaFlamboy, has more than 200 convicts and creatures lurking around inside. Tiela Halpin “Murder Road.” Once they get to the site, it’s go time. Thrill-seekers must walk down a dark trail and find their way through the cemetery, climbing around mausoleums and fallen trees. After they reach the top of the hill, it brings them to the front door of a house. It’s there that people must navigate through secret passages, up to the attic, go down a giant slide into the basement and face the wrath of dragons. The newest addition this year to HellsGate is the dragon cave that features a room full of 20-foot-tall dragons. Before one can escape Hells- Gate, this is the last obstacle they must go through. “The dragon cave, just the cave, is 76 feet by 26 feet; that’s bigger than some haunted houses, and that’s just the addition we put on this year,” LaFlamboy said. After successfully making it through the dragon cave, if one finds the key to Hells- Gate, their ticket is free. “Chicagoland is a merciless audience, man,” LaFlamboy said. “Chicagoland absolutely demands quality, so if you put a show out there that’s just not quality or pushing the boundaries or innovating, they will call you out on it. But if you constantly push, you constantly come up with new stuff and you’re constantly giving your audience something new every year, they come back.” General admission into HellsGate Haunted House is $28. It is open Thursdays and Sundays 7-10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays 7-11 p.m. throughout October and located at 3101 Canal St. It is also open from 7-10 p.m. on Halloween. Statesville Haunted Prison & City of the Dead Chicagoland is no stranger to Statesville Haunted Prison, with the iconic attraction continuing to grow over the last 22 years. Prior to the haunted house it is today, it began as a haunted hayride that was a popular Halloween attraction for all ages. In 1995, owner Paul Siegel of Statesville and Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm, said that it rained all but one-and-a-half weekend nights in October, forcing them to rethink their offerings and bring a new haunt under roof. Statesville Haunted Prison started out as a roughly 3,000-square-foot haunt in 1996. Twenty-two years later, it’s earned multiple state and national awards, one of which ranked them as No. 3 for fan-voted “mustsee” haunt in Illinois in 2017. They were also ranked the fifth-scariest in the country in 2017 by The Scare Factor Haunted House Reviews. Siegel created the idea of Statesville after having lived across the street from the prison as a child growing up. “As a kid growing up, I was exposed to inmates, as well as the guards that were watching them,” he said. “My father was good friends with the warden, and they used to ride the outside of the prison on horseback, so we would visit with the guards a couple times a day and see them walking right in front of our house going around the prison.” Reflecting on that experience as a child, he began to wonder: What could be a scarier theme for a haunted house than a prison? “I’ve only observed on tours, obviously never been in jail, never been in prison, but I have toured Stateville and realized that to build on the fear that people have of incarceration, when you’re in prison you basically lose your rights, your freedoms and you’re totally dominated by the guards and administration, which is scary enough in itself,” Siegel said. He remembers that when people would come to visit the prison on Sundays, a lot of people pronounced it with the “s” in the middle of the name, and thus, Statesville Haunted Prison was born. Siegel hired LaFlamboy 20 years go to help make Statesville what it is today. “When I came in ‘98, I had a thesis of how to create an interactive, actorbased theatrical haunted house. At the time, nobody was doing that, it didn’t exist,” LaFlamboy said. “So I kind of came in with this new idea of how to do it, so I knocked down what little they had there and created Statesville Haunted Prison as we know it today.” Every year, LaFlamboy said he changes 30 percent of the house to always bring something new to customers. This year, the famous clown room has been redesigned to create a “scarier, more edgy clown room.” Overall, Statesville features 44 terrifying rooms, with more than 200 convicts and creatures lurking inside. It takes about 40 to 50 minutes total to go through Statesville & City of the Dead, which is the cave that all the pretend prisoners are buried in. “Statesville, it’s like one iconic room after another at this point. After 21 years of fine-tuning and reinventing, man we really have a bunch of iconic rooms in there now,” LaFlamboy said. General admission into Statesville Haunted Prison & City of the Dead is $30.
