6 | October 4, 2018 | The Homer Horizon news homerhorizon.com Rotary Club gives approximately 1,000 third-graders dictionaries Various elementary schools in Homer Glen, Lockport, Crest Hill receive gift Jacquelyn Schlabach Assistant Editor In this day and age, it’s easy to look up any word online and learn the definition along with synonyms, antonyms and everything in between. Despite the accessibility, members of the Lockport Rotary Club believe having a hard copy of a dictionary, or any book for that matter, brings more value than any computer could. Approximately 1,000 third-graders from nine different elementary schools in Homer Glen, Lockport and Crest Hill — who will one day go on to attend Lockport Township High School — each received a free dictionary courtesy of the Lockport Rotary Club. “Our club is about 30 members strong, and our members go to each one of the schools and pass out the dictionaries at the school,” member and past president Tom Drake said. This is the fourth year that the club has visited Butler, St. Dennis, Milne Grove, Taft School, Goodings Grove, Schilling and Young schools to pass out the free dictionaries. The members started their tour of the schools Sept. 12 and finished giving out the dictionaries on Sept. 20. “We met four years ago with two of the principals to help select what type of dictionary they wanted,” Drake said. “They decided to go to a more advanced dictionary, because they said dictionaries are the type you can use beyond high school.” The club selected thirdgraders as the recipients because Drake said that they learned though an organization called The Dictionary Project that third grade is the year in school when students start to focus more on words and writing skills. According to its website, “The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.” On average each year, the Lockport Rotary Club spends $2,800 on dictionaries that they purchase through The Dictionary Project, a nonprofit whose goal is to provide as many thirdgraders across the country with dictionaries as possible. At the end of this year, the rotary club will have given 3,800 dictionaries for free to students. Photo submitted The dictionaries, which are called “A Student’s Dictionary,” contain 540 pages not only of words, but educational resources, including maps, a description of every United States president, the Constitution, information about the planets and more. “There were versions that were more grade school-oriented, so we selected the one that had more in-depth and a little more going forth, and it seems like its gone over very, very well,” Drake said. “Our reception from the teachers has been spectacular, and a number of kids have talked about their brothers and sisters bringing it home in previous years and now they have their own.” When approximately four or five Rotarians visit each classroom, the first thing they have the students do after passing out the dictionaries is have them write their name on the first page. “No. 1, it’s their own book, so for a lot of our students, what the teachers tell us is the kids we’re reaching out to don’t have a book of their own,” Drake said. “They might have a family book, but this one is their own, they can write their name in it, and that ownership I think is real important.” He added that while computers are a good tool, a lot of times someone might not have access to one and having a hard copy of a dictionary can be very helpful. “I’m not sure if they’re going to use it forever or not, but I’m convinced that having your own book is kind of a special thing,” Drake said. New this year, the rotary club also purchased Spanishto-English dictionaries as a result of a changing demographic of students in school and a specific request from teachers. The students who receive those also receive The Student Dictionary. After the students write their names in their new dictionaries, the members share with them how the book isn’t just a dictionary, but a resource they can use for many other different subjects. With every class they visit, they always look up the word “beneficial” together. The four-way test, which is an ethical guide for Rotarians to use, ask the questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Those four questions are on a sticker that the members put on the front of each of the dictionaries. “What we do is we have the kids read these and have them tell us if they think these are good things to keep in mind, and then we look up the word beneficial, and it’s an adjective that means useful,” Drake said. The Lockport Rotary Club hopes to continue spreading the message that dictionaries are beneficial to everyone, while fulfilling their mission of providing every thirdgrader with a dictionary of their own. “I foresee the Lockport Rotary Club doing this indefinitely,” Drake said. “There’s great support among the club and for thirdgraders. It’s something that the teachers definitely really encourage, and we’ve gotten just real support among the school districts.” For more information on the Lockport Rotary Club and its philanthropic efforts, visit www.lockportrotary. com. village From Page 4 Sewer alteration Finally, the board gave approval to Development Services Director Mike Salamowicz to slightly alter the construction plan of the Fiddyment Creek Sanitary Sewer. Originally, a section of the sewer consisting of several hundred feet of pipe, located on the Forest Preserve District of Will County property off Gougar Road, was intended to be installed using a boring method instead of using heavy equipment to dig a physical trench. The idea behind this plan, according to Salamowicz, was to create less neighborhood disturbance and avoid taking out additional trees. However, as construction has commenced, several trees in the specified area have already been removed, so there would no longer be a benefit in using the digging method. Salamowicz therefore requested that the length of sanitary sewer be created using the more traditional trench method, instead. While this would, he admitted, be a little louder while the work goes on, changing the construction method will result in the Village saving $145,000, he said. “It will also be completed quicker, and keep us on schedule to complete the project,” Salamowicz said. Warning on door-to-door scammers, vehicle thefts The board and Will County Sheriff’s Office warned residents to be aware of door-to-door scammers and automotive robberies on the street, which have both been noted in neighboring communities recently. Residents are encouraged to call the police if they see suspicious activity and are reminded that since solicitation requires a permit in Homer Glen, it is possible to ask to see a permit from any salesperson, or alleged salesperson, that comes to the door. Reminder on safe driving with fall congestion Yukich noted that as autumn progresses and local farm fests, including Bengtson’s Pumpkin Fest and Konow’s Fall Fest, continue and crowds grow that drivers should exercise extra caution due to increased traffic and pedestrians in the area.
