Usually when a team
scores 50 or more points in a
football game, it blows out its
opponent, often with a running
clock in the second half.
Friday, Sept. 28 was anything
but usual for Providence,
which treated its
Homecoming fans to a thrilling
58-42 victory over Hope
Academy during a Chicago
Catholic League crossover
game at Bishop Kaffer Stadium
and Matt Senffner Field
in New Lenox.
In order to become playoff
eligible with their fifth victory,
the Celtics had to rally
from a double-digit deficit in
the second half and accomplished
that by scoring 42
points after halftime.
They did that despite surrendering
42 points as well.
A very good showing by the class in Week 6. Maybe
the games are too easy. Maybe we should throw in a
few NFL games to spice things up. Maybe not…
Game of the Week
• Providence(5-1) at Mt. Carmel (6-0)
Other Games to Watch
• Lincoln-Way East (6-0) at Lockport (0-6)
• Tinley Park (2-4)at Oak Forest (0-6)
• Champaign Centennial (2-4) at L-W Central (4-2)
• Thornton (4-2) at Lincoln-Way West (4-2)
• Thornwood (1-5) at Andrew (5-1)
• Stagg (2-4) at Sandburg (2-4)
Coming into the game, the
Celtics had only allowed 40
points, and that was in their
first five games combined.
“It was just one of those
nights,” Providence junior
defensive back/quarterback
Ryan Manikowski said. “Obviously
they’re a fast team,
but their offense was pretty
simple, especially compared
to Brother Rice, which was
the most complex offense
I’ve ever faced. Hope came
out and outplayed us. It was
just one of those days.”
Providence (5-1) trailed
26-16 at the half to a team
it had clobbered 56-14 last
fall in a game that was remembered
more from being
delayed for nearby gunshots
than for what actually transpired
on the field of play.
“We knew we could’ve
done better in the first half
than to be down 10 points
Top Performers
1. Ryan Manikowski
Providence. Rushed for his first two touchdowns of the
season after taking over as quarterback in the second half.
2. Aaron Vaughn Jr.
Providence. The freshman delivered once again, scoring
twice in the decisive second half both via the run, including
an 80-yarder early in the fourth quarter.
3. Ben Martus
Providence. Rushed for two touchdowns.
and that we had to get it going
on offense for our defense
for once,” senior captain/running
back/linebacker Brenden
Martus said. “But their quarterback
[Trevor Land] was the
real deal, and we knew they
had something like 20 returning
starters so it would be a
different team from last year.”
said.
His 67-yard and 1-yard
touchdown runs in the third
quarter allowed the Celtics to
regain the lead at 30-26, but
Hope answered with a touchdown
of their own to retake
the lead at 34-30.
The Celtics took the lead
Jerrell Wright followed
