October is for Locals
Delray Beach is a fun place to live and visit year
round but this October is for locals.
BY Stephanie Immelman
Our great weather, beautiful beaches and fun lifestyle bring
people in from all over the world for 7 or more months of
the year. It’s great for local businesses and keeps the economy
strong. And during those months, more than other times of the
year, Delray Beach is filled with fun events and activities to entertain
the masses. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a month of interesting
things to check out without extra people clogging up the place?
You know, sometime before we get busy, just for us. Well before everyone
arrives for high season this year, we have an October packed
with fun for the locals!
We start the month off with a cool new exhibit opening Friday,
October 5th at the Spady Museum. The Harlem Renaissance Experience
is a 2D, 3D and Virtual Reality exhibit. The 2D exhibit introduces
you to the artists, writers and musicians who contributed the
movement. Dance in the 3D experience with patrons of the Savoy
Ballroom. Ocular glasses provide a virtual reality ride through Harlem
in a car and a view of the Savoy Ballroom from the inside. This
is a perfect mix of new technology and local history.
That same Friday is also the opening of Agatha Christie’s A Murder
is Announced, at the Delray Beach Playhouse. A Murder is Announced
begins when a notice appears in a village newspaper announcing
that “A murder will take place on Friday, October 29th at
Little Paddocks at 6:30 pm.” From there the puzzle begins! With afternoon
and evening shows it’s great for the family, a date or even a
solo outing. Performances run from October 5 to the 21st. Thanks
for the Memories also appears at the Playhouse later this month.
As everyone knows, October is the month of America’s favorite
scary holiday: Halloween, and Delray Beach is one city which
doesn’t miss out on the chance to dress up! Holiday fun begins Friday
the 19th for Witches of Delray Brew at Tim Finnegan’s. Go enjoy
all the fun of dressing up in your witchiest costume while enjoying
an auction, food and drinks. It’s free to attend! And don’t put away
that costume yet, October 27th is the local favorite event: Witches
of Delray Ride. Put that witchy costume back on, decorate your bike
and join in for the 7th Annual witch ride for charity. 100% of the
fee goes to charity, and the fun-filled 4.5 mile ride includes Atlantic
Avenue, Swinton, A1A, Pineapple Grove and the Green Market.
Boo! at the library and Haunted Oldies Movie are two other spooky
events not miss.
These are just a few of the many things going on in October! Art’s
Garage has plenty of great live music, there is an Orchid event at Old
School Square, the Green Market Launches its new season on the
27th, free Friday Nights concerts at Old School Square and much,
much more! So get out there and enjoy that extra elbow room, because
the northerners are coming soon. For more information on
these and all events, go to DelrayBeachCalendar.com.
